Artists & Makers: Do THIS and the Craft Fair Jury Will LOVE You!
Applying to juried craft shows or art events can be a daunting process, especially when you’re met with rejection despite your best efforts. But don't worry! Getting accepted to a juried craft fair is totally possible with the right approach.
I spent nearly a decade selling handmade products at craft shows, including many juried events. (I even wrote a book about it!)
And in this video, I invited Dear Handmade Life founder Nicole Stevenson to share her insights on how to get into juried craft shows.
Nicole has been running Patchwork Show, a series of juried craft shows in California, for more than 16 years. She's spent a lot of years jurying craft fair vendors and has some tips on what crafters should expect and how to stay on a craft show organizer's good side!
ABOUT NICOLE:
Nicole Stevenson is a multi-passionate creative, middle-aged first-time mama, impostor syndrome warrior, Korean BBQ connoisseur and the CEO and creative director at Dear Handmade Life. Nicole's desire to help other creatives pursue their dream business and discover the joy of making led her away from her own handmade business and into teaching, consulting, running her own workshop studio and eventually co-founding Dear Handmade Life in 2007. Now, she connects, educates and shortens the learning curve for other creatives by sharing what she's learned through the Dear Handmade Life events like Craftcation Conference, Patchwork Show and Camp Dear Handmade Life, blog and podcast. She has a BA and an MA in English and a dual “PhD” in crafting to keep your sanity and badass business skills from the School of Life.

    You talk a lot about packaging and signs and all these cost things, this takes away from the profit margin. if you're a real business person you need to add all of that up and calculate it into your pricing and also consider at some point, are you making a profit. I know people that do shows like this and they spend so much money on tents and bags and accessories that in the end after doing four or five craft shows a year they really don't make much money. So whatever you can do to get the displays and accessories that you need to make your product look good and not have to overprice it, that's the best way or some people need to consider that the products that they make are not conducive to making a profit especially if it's something that customers can get in a store for less.

    • @badasscreatives
      @badasscreatives 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely, Paula. You're right that ALL of the costs of running your business need to be factored in when pricing your products and figuring out your profit margins. And it's also true that many people who do craft shows or sell handmade products treat it as more of a hobby than looking at all of the factors necessary to run a successful business. Having a "hobby business" may be right for some folks, but if someone's trying to truly make a living out of it, they need to consider all factors. Thanks for watching!

    Hi! Thanks! Do I need a sellers permit though for all the different states where i'd like to sell?

    • @badasscreatives
      @badasscreatives 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Sofia! For that type of question (anything to do with state permitting & licensing) - I'd suggest reaching out to a local small business accountant or if you're in the U.S. I highly recommend finding your local Small Business Development Center (SBDC) as they have a lot of great resources and experts you can talk to who will be more knowledgable about your local area. If you're selling your products wholesale to a local boutique, the boutique is usually responsible for filing the sales tax. But tax laws and permitting varies from place to place, so it's important to talk to an expert if you want to be sure.

    Great video. While I have worked on it quite hard, one challenge I have for a weekly evening fair I participate in is that they only give us 1 hour to set up our booth (and go park the car). I make jewelry, so lots of little things, and I don't always have someone to help me with set up. I have worked it out by having pre-displayed items on jewelry boards that I take from a box and set on the table or hang from the side of the tent. Always looking for new ideas, though. Thanks

    • @badasscreatives
      @badasscreatives 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much! And yes -- a limited amount of time to set up your booth (and park!) is definitely difficult. I had similar struggles back when I was regularly doing craft shows. One thing I ended up using, especially for small items like jewelry, was stackable jewelry trays. I had a lot of them, and I even found a carrying case that I could fit them all in, so basically I'd stack them all up, put them into the carrying case and then I could easily and quickly transport and set up a lot of small jewelry items at once. You can see a few pictures of those trays in some of my craft show booth photos in this blog post: www.badasscreatives.com/blog/craft-show-display-tips-tricks Here is a direct link to some stackable jewelry trays that are similar to what I used: amzn.to/3Lxz0Fk

  • @Wendathena
    @Wendathena 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Great video - thanks so much. I've been making jewelry for over 15 years and selling on Etsy and at arts and craft fairs under my own name. Etsy is great, but competition is high, which reduces visibility in the search algorithm and makes it such that pricing is at about wholesale. I would like to get in boutiques, but had a question about the pricing and marketing. If I am basically selling at wholesale pricing under my current branding (which is my name) through Etsy and in person, if I try to sell to boutiques, who could probably charge double what I am charging, am I better off creating a new brand and list the items and offer to the retail boutiques with the suggested retail price so that they will not worry that I am undercutting them and I could get the price I need, expand my market, and to make it worthwhile to not sell direct to customers? I do sometimes price higher and offer discounts through Etsy or in person, but my understanding is that there are FTC rules that require me to have products "on sale" and discounted for only short periods of time.

    • @badasscreatives
      @badasscreatives 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thanks so much, I'm glad the video was helpful! As far as the first part of your question - based on what you've described, yes I think it sounds like a good plan to create a different brand for the purpose of selling to retail boutiques, if you're going to continue pricing your products at essentially a wholesale price for direct sales via your Etsy shop and craft shows. There are pros and cons, of course, because you wouldn't get the benefit of increased brand awareness for your direct-to-consumer sales via having your products sold in retail shops, but if your main goal is purely to add a new sales channel (retail shops), I think it makes sense to either create a different brand for those sales, or depending on what the boutique would prefer you may even want to give them the option to "white-label" the jewelry you sell to them. (So you would sell it to them, and they could repackage or rebrand it as their own.) White-label products are very popular within a lot of larger retail spaces like grocery stores, but it's something that small boutiques can take advantage of as well. Here's a good article about it: www.shopify.com/uk/blog/white-label For the second part of your question - I'm not sure about how the FTC rules might apply here. I'm vaguely familiar with the rules you're referring to because those rules applied to some promotions we ran at a very large corporation I worked for, but a lot of times those types of rules are really meant for regulating very big companies. I'm not a lawyer though, so if you're worried about it you may want to consult with a small business lawyer. If you're in the United States, organizations like your state's Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) and SCORE are other great resources for those types of questions, especially since they may be more familiar with local & state regulations.

      I love when I'm at a craft show and the person is at bar height! Communication and eye contact is everything! I understand they can't stand for hours on end, and this just feels better and more comfortable being able to be nearly eye to eye and it's easier to spot them and communicate!!

    Totally agree! And I think once people think of themselves as experts, they stop growing and improving! For me, one of the most fun parts about being a creative business owner is the creativity in figuring out how to run a business itself!

    • @badasscreatives
      @badasscreatives 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "the creativity in figuring out how to run a business itself" -- YES, totally! I've had a very similar experience -- back when I was running my handmade business in my 20s, learning about the business side of things and marketing (and the human psychology behind marketing) was so interesting and fun. That's how I ended up switching over to a full-time marketing career once I was ready to try something new. Especially for micro businesses and solopreneurs, figuring out the right combination of what works for YOU as an individual business owner can be challenging, but also so fun and rewarding!

    I love your way of seeing yourself not as an expert but as a person with knowledge and a need to keep on learning. I was a Spanish teacher for 12 years and kept asking myself how I could make it easier and more fun for the Kids to learn, so I kept on taking classes and got my Master degree. Even now I don't consider myself an expert. I was born to learn and I keep doing so today. Sorry for the long comment. I really enjoy your channel. 😊

      Thank you SO MUCH for the “long” comment, Christine! Also - “I kept asking myself how I could make it easier and more fun to learn” - THAT is what’s missing from so much of education, both traditional schools and online education. I’ve always LOVED learning but traditional education has often rubbed me the wrong way. (I dropped out of high school, got my GED and later a college degree, then went on to be an Adjunct Professor at a university for a bit.) All this is to say - you are not alone, and I very much appreciate your comment!!

    I seriously get those SEO spam alot lately. I'm just a small time youtuber and they always spam me that my SEO is low and I should Hire them...that is already a Red flag me 100% but As making youtube videos is not my main money source I don't really care about growing fast...I just want to grow naturally.

    • @badasscreatives

      "I just want to grow naturally" - YES, love this! I think it's so important to be clear on your own goals, whatever they are. Artificial growth tricks & tactics can sometimes work, especially for the short-term, but they can also backfire or not build something that is sustainable for the long-term I'm so glad to hear that you are clear on what your OWN goals are! Wishing you all the best with your endeavors!
