  • Mabelreign
The area identified as Mabelreign today was established in 1892 as Spring Valley farm, by a gentleman who was known as Edward Walter Kermode. He was one of the servants in Pioneer Column which established Fort Salisbury (now Harare) 2 years earlier.
In 1895 Edward Kermode returned to the Ise of Mann, where he originated from and never returned, though he had title to his farm. The farm, now called Spring Valley had been surveyed, by a surveyor call Harry Sawenthal, who had a fiancé by the name of Miss Mabel Mann.
Miss Mabel Mann realising that the owner had left, and probably for good, decided to take over/invade that farm. A legal dispute ensued over the farm, however Miss Mabel eventually whow on the dispute. She decided to name the farm Mabel”reign” because she had conquered the in the case. As such the place is called Mabelreign to this dat.
The original owner’s son, came to Rhodesia in 1929 and subdivided the farm in to different territories, namely Meyrick (his mother’s maiden name), Monavale (derived from Mona’s Isle), Sentosa (a Malayan word meaning "peaceful") and Greencroft. These subdivisions later became very leafy beautiful suburbs, even to this day.
Mabelreigh has popular schools such as Mabelreign Girls High, Eliss Robbins and Alfred Beit.

That's crazy watching the drive past MGH and Fusch, 50 years later and it looks like yesterday, same trees, same cycle track. Wow

nice, you're in my hood. went to Alfred Beit. Used to go pa Calvary Baptist for ma Jets Cadets, and also Methodist church for the Boys Brigade. my love for books was birthed and natured pa library. My big bro and friends would go into Sherwood golf course to 'collect' ma golf ball aiva asara muma bunker. Used to go with some pals to Stanley Hill (Meyrick park)- steepest bike and skateboard route you could go on.
    Aaah the memories.
Ma tractor would cut the grass pamaroad verges. Now most places are built up or yava minda.
    Roads would be resurfaced constantly.
Trucks would come collect rubbish on schedule.
When I was young would actually get milk delivered at our gate (early '90s)
Zupco would run on schedule, then came ma 'Emergency taxi' ma Pijoti 504 :)

      True story:
So in Mabelreign there is a road called Truro (which some used to joke and call 'Tsuro')
As you know, there is another suburb called Malborough which is not that far from Mabelreign. Some call Mabelreign Malboreign which can confuse people. I have a relative who while needing to come to Mabelreign took kombis to Malborough...it also didn't help that they were supposed to drop of at Truro, and there's a road in Malborough called Tsuro :)

Thanks Harmony. Memories of going to those shops and the church with roof that touched the ground across from the petrol station. Are you able to do part 2 and turn right onto Sherwood off stortford drive to go towards meyrick park. Go down clavering rd after you turn left at church off Sherwood. Then get to Bodmin Ave turn right. Would love to see what it looks like now 😌🙏🏾

Beautiful suburb. Those mature trees lining the roads makes it all so beautiful. A lot of thought was put into planning this colonial suburb and I will always be for colonial surburbs. That history made me chuckle, ... Sisi Mebo vakaiita farm invasion..😂
