I had a smart key go bad on my S211. Had me worried that the whole system would have to be R&R'd (I've heard horror stories). Got lucky and only had to replace the key, $300 later. I love the car, but it can be expensive. I've had to replace the air springs, shocks, transfer case, sway bar, heater control valve, crank sensor, and I figure I'm somewhat lucky. Thanks for sharing. I've found some good info here from folks like you sharing.

Well at least the key tumbler still worked, otherwise you're in for some drilling...had to do that on my W124 and W126, almost like a bank safe heist!

I have a 1997 E320. Key will only turn in cylinder when tugging at locked steering wheel and lots of key juggling. I have the switchblade key and a valet key. Is this the same lock cylinder or is mine "smart"?

Just another quirk of working on a German car. Congrats for figuring it out.

Many Thanks for the video. Very informative. I have a 1996 E280 with a similar mechanical key cylinder. I have the infamous Locked steering wheel problem. The key can turn and even start the car but just failed to release the steering lock. Just wonder what the "No 1" key position is. You turn clockwise or anticlockwise to get to position 1?

I'm thinking that might need to be replaced on my car, I have the 03, I just wanna know what were the symptoms on the car if it's the switch vs the starter? Like what were the sounds or activity from the engine when you turned the key?

Do you keep the key in position 1 when taking out the old ignition switch and putting in the new one? I'm a DIYer too, but the fear of possibly locking my steering wheel up gives me the shivers.

Makes me appreciate my 1950s/1960s cars! Interesting video though. You teased us with a shot of the MG, are we going to see more on that soon? :-)

No, definitely not. Unfortunately I own a 1998 and the cost will be more than 850 €uro! I absolutely hate the Ex CEO Schrempp for making this crap W210 (the worst Mercedes ever made because all money for shareholder value).
