One is cuter, one is classier. I generally would be totally charmed by the Japanese version, but considering the theme, I like the brown tones and the sort of more “world traveler” feel to the stronghold game version. Also the versatility that is added by the randomized square tokens does make a big difference because it makes it potentially easier or harder depending on which coffee you are brewing combined with the random lay out.
This is great! I really like that you took your time to look at each component and told us what is different. Great job. :) Oh, and you got another subscriber. Good job with the top tens in the Dice Tower. ;)
Awesome comparison! Very thorough. I really like the original charm, but I can't justify the price. After seeing this I feel I could live with the new version.
I had the Japanese version in hands at Kyoto yellow submarine and as a fool I reput it back on the shelve ! I didn’t know at this time that it was so difficult to get this version in Europe :( .
I think having a random setup for the special tiles will make some roasts harder/easier, and I love my old version too :) I'm happy it got reprinted so others can enjoy it, but I'm happy with mine. Nice video :)
Thank you for this comparison! The other day, I almost bought the US version to supplement by imported copy. I saw different names of beans and thought maybe they were new "recipes." I arrange my cards in order of rounds. So the lightest brown is for the first test, medium for the second, and dark for the last. IIRC there are only two expert in options in the first set and based on having prior plays
Thanks for the comparison and I like the OG version myself. I normally wait until a game goes on sale or I can get it used, to help keep cost down. However, some games are just needed, irregardless of the extra $10-20 and this was one of them.
I've been playing the app, which has the new Stronghold graphics. I really like the app, but I am not going to spend the money on a physical copy. However, I can see handling the pieces while pretending to roast coffee would be more satisfying.
I recently found a used copy of the original Japanese game. I really appreciate seeing the differences between the two versions. As a collector, I like having multiple editions of some games in my collection, so I'll pick up the American version if I ever find an inexpensive one! :)
Liz, thanks for doing this comparison. While I am glad this game got a reprint, I'm also glad to see that there is nothing in the new edition that makes me feel I need to replace the original. The new edition does look nice though.
I was thinking same thing. I will wait until price drops. I know they are drastically different games, but would you go coffee roaster or warps edge? It seems to me that both are unique puzzles with bag building elements. Each coffee/mothership is different.
As you said, they're very different, but I really like coffee roaster, while Warp's Edge seems like a wait for retail, maybe get on sale game for me. CR can feel a little dry and can be really frustrating when you don't draw well, but when you get better luck of the draw is much less a factor. It's kinda neat that as you get better, your luck does too :)
I prefer the coffee roasting theme, but I believe Warp's Edge is the better game. I'll need to do a fuller review when I get the published copy, though!
I think most people who paid a lot of money and struggled to get the original will always say they prefer that edition so that they can justify paying an exorbitent amount to get the game.
I think that happens with a lot of games! However, I paid $60 for my original edition, and while I got a review copy of the new one, it retails for $45. I don't think it's that dramatic a difference.
This game looks so interesting... But I can't force myself to look past theme and stop remembering that coffee tastes and smells like boiled old socks.
Maybe you should try some different coffees. Often lighter to Medium roasts get a certain “acquired”taste (especially when made poorly) though these are the most common coffees that you would run into. Personally I realized how delicious coffee could be when living in Hawaii and spending time on the Kona Coffee plantation in their tasting room. Found out that I like SUPER dark roasts lightened up with lots of cream and a little sugar. Coffee is a lot like chocolate in that is can taste TOTALLY different depending on the beans, the roast, the preparation of the coffee (temp of water, strength etc) can really take it from fruity like drinking cherry water, all the way to much more rich smoky flavor with basically no fruitiness left at all. That’s the beauty of this game too, very thematic. Still you might hate all coffee, I won’t try to convert you 😉 but maybe try two cups of coffee at the opposite ends of the spectrums and see if you hate them both equally😁 maybe you are the coffee version of one of those people who hates chocolate, then tries white chocolate and LOVES it. You never know 😁
Thank you very much for showing both versions. I have a change to visit japan and get Japanise version.
Good comparison. I bought the American one on Ebay for £17.75 including postage. I think I prefer the new artwork anyway.
I love the aesthetic of the newer game... but I like the usefulness of the original... and that font is SUPER cute.

Love my Japanese import Coffee Roaster version. Thanks for the comparison video - it was fun to watch!

hi, does anyone know the difference between the box with only the dlp games icon and the box with both icons (stronghold game and dlp games?

Imagine being stuck in my class all day. :P
Ever since I heard that this was being re-released in a newer version was looking forward to it, unfortunately I feel it has overpriced itself
Asking the real questions
As to the been sheets efficency... One sided cards would be better to shuffle and choose at random.
Unrelated question: have you played kingdom death yet??? Is it worth it for solo play? Love your videos!!!
Hey Liz, I'll take the Stronghold version of the game off your hands since you're not as keen on it. Where should I send my address? :) :) :)

Where are you from? I love your accent :-)
Texas!
Paid £35 in the UK!
I totally overpaid for the original, too. No regrets, either. But, yeah, this is a $30 game... 😬

Just like D&D in the 80’s boardgames are quickly losing their charm as they become more “stylized and professional”
