  • Hi, here we have a Nintendo GameBoy Pocket with a blue screen of death. What could be causing this and can it be fixed?
    This Game Boy Pocket was already featured on Mike's channel ‪@1up_Gaming‬ Please subscribe to him so we can beat the‪@TheRetroFuture‬ amount of 600 subscribers 😂 That way I can gloat to Elliot and boy will I gloat!
    Thanks for watching.

    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    You should have put the Gameboy outside underneath some leaves, smear some dirt on it, and then poke a stick around and act like you found it xD Then 'restore' it 😆 Jokes aside, relaxing video as always. Thanks for that Vince 🙏

    What can work sometimes also is actually without breaking them pulling the copper traces up off of the backing then you can solder to them a little easier without messing the rest up and put them back down with the solder mask / nail polish / glue etc bit risky but can work really well.

    Soldering on flex is always a pain, especially at the fine pitch. I've done something similar for a USB drive for a coworker just so he could get some files from it. I told him that I couldn't promise how long it would last, but I was using individual copper strands from solder braid. Thankfully it worked, and he told me he used the drive as a test for about a week until the joints failed again. Told him I wouldn't do it again... Fantastic work!!

    If you need really small wire which you clearly need here a good place to get it is by splitting a few strands of your desoldering braid. If it's too thin you can wrap a couple of strands together. I've been doing it for a while and it works really well.

    Watching you use wire that's wider than the traces you're soldering to makes me anxious you're going to rip the traces off and make things even worse. It's really easy to rip traces when you're not using thin enough wire, even if you manage to solder it on fine, when you touch the wire afterwards it can rip everything off. I learned that the hard way.
    I'm surprised a device this old has traces that small. Everything is so big on the original DMG.

  • @vitor900000
    @vitor900000 ปีที่แล้ว

    13:31 You had a lot more track there before you separated them. The way you separated them caused more damage than it had.

    Good repair on the board there, we always find that the bigger or more complicated the repair attempt the more likely that the smaller things end up getting overlooked. Sounds to me like the traces on the screen may have been fractured further up during the previous repair attempts which looking at how complex they are is extremely easy to do.

    Should have done one at a time and used a tiny paint brush to put solder mask over the wire connection point before moving on to to the next one that way it would have been harder to knock them off also using to much heat on the soldering iron makes those tiny traces go bye bye so just use enough heat to melt the solder and don't hold it there to long
