  • Day 63: Arriving in Akureyri Iceland. We crossed the Arctic Circle
    Sunset was midnight, sunrise 2.10am
    Akureyri is a town with a rich history, surrounded by stunning landscapes and natural wonders. The colourful town was first established as a tiny fishing village and later stretched along the coast of Eyjafjörður fjord and up the steep hills above it. Akureyri is surrounded by 2 volcanoes. The volcanoes around Akureyri are the Viti volcano and the Hverfell volcano.
    The Goðafoss waterfall is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. The water of the river Skjálfandafljót falls from a height of 12 meters over a width of 30 meters. In the year 1000 the Icelandic leader Thorgeir made Christianity the religion of Iceland and threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall and named them Godafoss.
    Aldeyjarfoss waterfall in Skjálfandafljót river in North-Iceland drops from the ancient Baöardalshraun lava field, which flowed from an eruption some 9,000 years ago. It has beautiful basalt columns
    Heating in Iceland is geothermal.
    Iceland is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which is a divergent tectonic plate boundary where the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate are moving apart. This geological feature runs right through the center of Iceland. As a result, Iceland is one of the few places in the world where you can see the boundary between two tectonic plates on land.
    We visited the Lava field Dimmuborgir. They are infact lava flowed shapes some 2000 years old
    The kind of Lupine that grows in Iceland is the Alaskan Lupine (Lupinus Nootkatensis).
    Alpine daisy The mountain avens or, 'Holtasóley', was voted the National Flower of Iceland
    Alpine bartsia is a wildflower that grows in mountainous areas.
    Papaver nudicaule, the Blue Iceland poppy] are hardy but short-lived perennials,
