- Another coach tour.
Our first stop were the beautiful Public Gardens. This was followed by a tour of the Citadel.
A quick tour of the city, then we went on a long drive to Peggy's Cove. This could have been a beautiful scenic drive, but unfortunately everything was enshrouded in fog, & things didn't improve when we reached the Cove.
The original inhabitants of Novia Scotia were the Mi'kmaq peoples (Cape Breton Island, called Mi’kma’ki. The Mi’kmaq did not establish permanent settlements, but moved in seasonal rounds from coast where they were fishers and hunted for caribou. The English over took their country in bloody wars.
We then visited the Fairview Lawn Cemetery, where many victims of disasters around Halifax are buried
The Titanic sank approximately 750 miles from Halifax and has had a significant influence on the city's history. Fairview Lawn Cemetery is where the bodies of 121 victims of the Titanic, which were recovered from the icy waters of the Atlantic, were laid to rest.
On the morning of 6 December 1917 the French cargo ship SS Mont-Blanc collided with the Norwegian vessel SS Imo in the harbour of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Mont-Blanc, laden with high explosives, caught fire and exploded, devastating the Richmond district of Halifax. 9000 men, women and children died.
More than 200 people perish after Swissair flight 111 crashes into the water near Peggy's Cove.
We then continued back to Port where we perused a well stocked souvenir shop , which helped to add to the many souvenirs purchased on our trip.
We were serenaded by a couple of bagpipers during the day, & I have included their music
