This show makes me feel sad for the kids who are raised to inherit their parents' issues and prejudices, be those prejudices about race, religion, politics, or whatever.

I lived through Katrina, so the pissed me off , Because to this day we spend every hurricane, tropical storm , thunder storm in fear of a repeat , right now were stressing over Marco and laura. Being a kid during Katrina, that doesn't leave you .
I'm from New Orleans and stayed during Katrina. My great uncle Hugh Alvin Ricks was a famous local artist who grew up in the 9th ward and died from hurricane katerin. The hospital kicked him out after the storm and he had open wounds and Katrina water. He went through the water and made it to the bridge on I-10, but he was already infected from the water. He was there suffering for days as he died. He was also robbed while on I-10 while waiting for help that didn't come in time. That's not the only person i know who died that day. My life and family will never be the same after that day.
I am black myself and this man(abasi) left a horrible test in my mouth . Just because you are a black person It doesn't mean you can say or treat people however you want. All because you are black/minority. . Racism is racism, rudeness is rudeness no matter where's coming from. Treat people the way you want to be treated 🙄

I'm black too, and I disagree. Sure the burping was embarrassing and the bbq was rude af, but there were lots of legitimate points made. Reparations need to be honored, there IS a struggle for blacks, that blacks often are discouraged against for expressing. That being said, I do believe equality is an important main goal, which isn't yet met. Margaret's friends however, disgustingly embarrassing. They way they ignorantly spoke of Katrina was abhorrent. I appreciate Abasi's mentor though.

Notice that Abasi only focused on himself during the money scene. LaToya focused on her daughter and their house but he focused on himself. While her letter was cruel, her points had some validity, but could have been conveyed much better-she had her point. Marguerite, honestly, was completely justified in her actions with the money. I actually thought he was really patient with her until he lost his cool, and she was offensive so many times. It's completely absurd for a white person to act like they're so great because they are blind to race! It was really sad to see Abasi. You could see his wife let’s love drive her actions to make change for those suffering, while Abasis actions were more anchored in fear and hatred.

This particular episode was definitely a trigger emotionally for me. I recognized alot of abuser tendencies just as you did. Im almost a year out from my toxic and abusive "relationship" with my sons father and alot of the behavior abasi showed resembled my X. But i pushed through to see the ending. Def worth it.

The whole way the view Katrina is seriously pissing me off. It affected everyone. The Gulf Coast is a mix of black, white, Asian and Hispanic. Katrina did not care, it destroyed everything. My family- parents and FIVE KIDS- lived in a car when we lost everything. It ruined lives. Marriages. Families. Don't make that a race thing. Edit: I do love that LaToya realized that it was hard for everyone. And helping in anyway means a lot. I remember I got a single blanket from someone in another state and I still have it to this day.
No. It becomes a race thing when you take into consideration the lack of hurricane relief in African American communities. Perhaps your experience has put you together with people that share that lane of thought, but it isn’t about how it destroyed everyone. It was how they handled the rescue and relief of minority communities. If you extract emotion from a situation, you can see things clearly.

I remember vividly all the people in my community killed over single 24 packs of water. If you did not live in NO, you were forgotten about. Not to mention, Oprah actually helped out the African-American communities in my region but not anyone else. My family was homeless, with very little food or water and no where to go. My friends survived Katrina by riding out floods on their roofs. 29ft of water, lost everything we owned, and we got nothing to rebuild from anyone. Only the kindness of strangers who sent things when they heard our communities WEREN'T receiving the help they needed. If you didn't have to suffer through that, I suggest you don't tell me how I can and can't feel about a extremely traumatic event in my entire family's life. Where I came from, it wasn't a race thing. We all suffered equally because no one cared that OS wasn't NO. Or that Biloxi wasn't NO. Or Gulfport. Of Saucier. Or Pass Christian. Trust me, I know a lot more about this than you can imagine.

Her definition of racial pride is helping her local communities. Abasi’s definition of racial “pride” if you can even call it that seems to be “Gibs me dat repairatons money Whitey” the difference is that Latoya is making a positive contribution to the World without taking away from others whereas Abasi wants others to make his contribution for him because he feels he’s entitled to it.

This episode really irked me. Maybe even more so than the first. I think what bothered me the most was Latoya’s treatment of Ashley and Abasi’s treatment of Marguerite (this one’s self explanatory). As for Ashley, I think it’s none of anyone’s business where she’s living. It’d be one thing if her parents were asking her to leave and she resisted. But that wasn’t the case. The parents seemed very happy to have her and their granddaughter in the house. They were probably helping Ashley save a lot of money as well, which I see no problem with? If you have the means to help your child, why wouldn’t you? I bet my mother would simply adore having me live at home again, ya know, bc she loves me… Latoya spoke of Ashley like she was a 40yo shrew who was leeching off her family from the basement. Ashley was in her early 20s, worked and from what was portrayed in their first episode, she appeared to be mommy #2 in the house - cooking, planning, running the household. To then leave Ashley out of the 50k and make those disrespectful comments, it was just so unnecessarily rude. Oh, and then to say Marguerite can have the 10k after she finishes a half marathon? Wtf? People can want to lose weight/be healthy without wanting to run stupid races lmao. That was a dig. This whole episode blew me. I was glad the little girl was given the whole amount. She was deserving of a small monetary advantage in adulthood, much more so than her parents.
I agree! It was so satisfying that the little girl got all the money! I am not american and its difficult for me to understand the accent of her dad when he talks and there is no subtitles. I didmt understamd what he said about the piano. He isnt happy about it? He keeps repeating " I would.be own or old " something like that. Is he pissed about the piano thing or happy? I don't get it. About Latoya I feel she has some resentment towards people who are not strugeling. And wants them to feel bad or guilty if they dont have a tough life or if they simply are suported. She is in contact with people who lost houses and who had bad things happening, not because of true goodness or empathy but because she likes to be in contact of " how tough life is" because it makes her feel better and more victimized about her own strugles. She cant see people having easy lifes and being suported that is why she hated Ashley. Also, I live in India and here its a cultural thing to never move out of the house even if you have the money, because family is understood as a big group who suport each other and indian people cant even get why would you all live in separated homs when you can live together and progress more together as a big group. So not moving out its seen as "loser" maybe in the US, but in India it is the normal thing to do. And I admire Ashley to dedicate her money to private school for her daugther and to more important things than simply moving out, unless she would have a partner I dont see how moving out would be benefitial for her daugther AT ALL.

When hell does break lose, it's a build up of many of such instances and in reality white people do take longer to recognize and actually confront the racism from their own community. My take away: Margret was better behaved this time around, she was in the right. Latoya said the money should’ve been spent on house repairs, but if you’re not gonna make your guest feel welcomed in your home then don’t expect that guest to contribute to up upkeeping & repairing said home. HOWEVER, Latoya’s right, Ashley was spoiled. I say “was” because she did die in a car accident, God *bless her soul. Edit: I originally meant “bless,” I don’t know why auto correct had changed that.

I'm from New Orleans and stayed during Katrina. My great uncle Hugh Alvin Ricks was a famous local artist who grew up in the 9th ward and died from hurricane katerin. The hospital kicked him out after the storm and he had open wounds and Katrina water. He went through the water and made it to the bridge on I-10, but he was already infected from the water. He was there suffering for days as he died. He was also robbed while on I-10 while waiting for help that didn't come in time. That's not the only person i know who died that day. My life and family will never be the same after that day.

The whole way the view Katrina is seriously pissing me off. It affected everyone. The Gulf Coast is a mix of black, white, Asian and Hispanic. Katrina did not care, it destroyed everything. My friends survived Katrina by riding out floods on their roofs. 29ft of water, lost everything we owned, and we got nothing to rebuild from anyone. If you didn't have to suffer through that, I suggest you don't tell me how I can and can't feel about a extremely traumatic event in my entire family's life. This episode really irked me. Maybe even more so than the first. I think what bothered me the most was Latoya’s treatment of Ashley and Abasi’s treatment of Marguerite (this one’s self explanatory). As for Ashley, I think it’s none of anyone’s business where she’s living. It’d be one thing if her parents were asking her to leave and she resisted. But that wasn’t the case. The parents seemed very happy to have her and their granddaughter in the house. They were probably helping Ashley save a lot of money as well, which I see no problem with? If you have the means to help your child, why wouldn’t you? I bet my mother would simply adore having me live at home again, ya know, bc she loves me… Latoya spoke of Ashley like she was a 40yo shrew who was leeching off her family from the basement. Ashley was in her early 20s, worked and from what was portrayed in their first episode, she appeared to be mommy #2 in the house - cooking, planning, running the household. To then leave Ashley out of the 50k and make those disrespectful comments, it was just so unnecessarily rude. Oh, and then to say Marguerite can have the 10k after she finishes a half marathon? Wtf? People can want to lose weight/be healthy without wanting to run stupid races lmao. That was a dig. This whole episode blew me. I was glad the little girl was given the whole amount. She was deserving of a small monetary advantage in adulthood, much more so than her parents.

Also, I live in India and here its a cultural thing to never move out of the house even if you have the money, because family is understood as a big group who suport each other and indian people cant even get why would you all live in separated homs when you can live together and progress more together as a big group.
So not moving out its seen as "loser" maybe in the US, but in India it is the normal thing to do. And I admire Ashley to dedicate her money to private school for her daugther and to more important things than simply moving out, unless she would have a partner I dont see how moving out would be benefitial for her daugther AT ALL.

Why do people always say that ''had there been a white person acting in the exact same way as abasi to a black person OMG all hell would be breaking loose and they'd be considered total racists''? When hell does break lose, it's a build up of many of such instances and in reality white people do take longer to recognize and actually confront the racism from their own community. In this thread everyone was quick to call Abasi a racist, numerous of other situations when the 'races' are reversed, only the Black people seem to be able to call out the racism and then a few exceptions from non-Black people.

and its not just color, there many differences, let alone more individual things. even people in the same race they can be very different because of culture and history.

I agree with his friend. The swapping experience is about teaching each other. You can get your point across and people will listen if you talk with them not at them. Our disparities in this country should be discussed in partnerships where all views and beliefs and perspectives are taken into consideration and are combined to create solutions.

Abasi actually reminds me of a more radical version of my own father. A black man in America that is hyper-aware of American history and very intolerant of westernization. It's not a bad quality but I think because of trauma, my dad and abasi alike have few outlets to effectively take political action. You have to watch the way you make your points if you want people to listen.

My take away:
Margret was better behaved this time around, she was in the right. Latoya said the money should’ve been spent on house repairs, but if you’re not gonna make your guest feel welcomed in your home then don’t expect that guest to contribute to up upkeeping & repairing said home. HOWEVER, Latoya’s right, Ashley was spoiled. I say “was” because she did die in a car accident, God *bless her soul.

In retrospect, the way she was treated is the way a lot of African American, and other races are treated and she acted like seeing how people of those communities are treated was a bad thing. It should’ve been an eye opener but he definitely didn’t have to be rude and disgusting like that :/
