What a wonderful time it was in the early 1970's with my dad and brother and our bikes. And of course my "Z50". It had a blue tank and I will never forget that sound! Some of the best memories of my life. Thanks for the post!
My older brother had the blue version and I had the yellow version back in the late 60’s. Good days.
Bad gas tank, no chain guard, icy road. All perfect conditions for a top speed run.

I'm new to motorcycles. why are chain guards important? is it because they prevent your leg from getting wrapped up in the chain?
Even though I rode a full size Honda when these things came out, I loved riding a friends. So much fun.

I bought a Z50 w shocks in 1994 ,for 5 bucks ,the guy said it will never run, I took it home cleaned the carb, put gas it and push started it on the sidewalk ,( it was missing the kicker) it took three squares to start , that's like 12 or 15 feet , had to JB Weld the rusty tank leak and put a wheelbarrow tire on the front, my kids had a blast with it :)

I had a 1972 Z50 when I was a kid. Clocked it many times just over 30 mph. 32 or 33 being it's best as I recall. It was flying!

I had a blue and gray one. I would say around 30 mph on level, faster downhill slower up hill. I put on a larger front sproket.

You've got to get your hands on an early 80's 2-stroke Honda MB5 (5 speed, 7 HP). 50cc's of street machine that will hit 55 MPH! Fun as balls to ride and shift!

OMG, when that thing started the sound took me right back to around 1969. I spent countless hours riding my yellow CT-50 after school.

I had a CT-70 in 1980 as a kid. Fun bike but very slow. Same type of 3-speed clutchless transmission as the Z50. With a tailwind going downhill I could hit a mesmerizing 45mph!
I had a mini trail 50 and was totally jealous when a neighbor kid got a CT-70. My 50 topped out (with my skinny 90 butt onboard) at 32 mph whereas his would go 45 mph!
My 4 speed could probably safely go 50 mph. Pretty fast on a toy.

Pull the tank screen and clean it, put pool or aquarium sand in the tank with dish soap and shake it ,(a paint shaker works great) that will sand out the rust.

I owned one as a 12-13 year old back in the late 60’s. From LOTS of personal experience I can tell you that my bike would go 32 MPH with my skinny ~90 lb butt in the saddle.

If the valve adjustment is too tight, they will be hard starting and the engine won’t rev. Of course the point gap must be set properly and the fuel has to flow properly. I picked up 1971 Z50 AK2 that wouldn’t start. Low compression. Took it home, adjusted the valves and she popped right off. The bike was blue/white and 100% complete. Not bad for $150.00. The valves and seats eventually wear over time and the valve lash decreases.
I had the same year I had better weather and mine would hit 30 35 mph , it always started never broke down other than to have the frame welded . Rode that till I was in my 30s . Received for a christmas gift when I was 11 .

Hey guy, Thanks for showing some interest in these great little bikes. To us old guys(I'm 65) these little dream machines were something I always wanted when I was 11. A buddy of mine had a brand new one in 1970 so I got to ride It often. But I never had one myself. I still want one now for my 2 grandsons. Can you help??
Bad Ass. I restored every nut and bolt on my 1984 Z50 a few years ago that my Uncle gave me in 1987. I could let that thing sit for a year and it would still kick over. These Bikes are built like tanks. Highly collectible too and a small fortune restored.
I had a red one first in 1972 then got another blue one in 73 great memories moved on to motocross in 1975 with yz's
The first bike I ever drove was a 1969 Z50 I was like 17. Was a friends, I was supposed to be at a school choir practice my adhd ass forgot about. I’m learning the bike in his cul-de-sac. I hit 3rd gear and go through a dip (at 20-25mph plenty fast for a 1st timer) the bike jumps a few inches as I land (landed pretty uneasy) I realize I’m heading right into a curb, so I go to hit the brakes mistakenly using the rear brakes. Bike fishtails, still heading towards the curb, quickly I understand I’m not stopping this bike. I see that if I don’t jump off now it’s the asphalt or the grass so I choose the grass and jump over the handlebars and land on grass. The bike goes into the curb. I shut it off and inspect it, nothing wrong besides a new minor dent and scratch on the frame. The bike still ran and drove fine afterwards. If I had more interest in bikes a Z50 would be my first pick. Not quick, but plenty of fun for a suburban Utah neighborhood.
How durable is it? Does it compete with the xr75? How fast could I get it if I put some special gear on it?
XR 75 was a nice bike , my friend had one and would pass my ass all the time .

mini trail had a governor in the carb kept the needle from going up very high

Had one back in '68. I STILL have it. But they made a mini STREET with higher gearing and it was definitely faster on the road. About 45mph.
I had a 71 and I easily could get it to go 30, maybe a little more, it was new, and my brother had a sl 175 ,and he clocked it , they were fun little bikes
I had a 71 and it would easily go a little over 30 , realize I was only 10years old and weighed about 70 pounds, fun little bike, always wanted a X-R 75 but never came about?
You need to go into the settings on the GoPro and flip the view. Everything is backwards, as I’m sure you know.

Myvvrother has got my z50j 1996 to go about 60 km/h without rev limiter runs pretty poorly now though probably gonna buy a new engine before the riding season
I have an 1985 z50j and a 1969 z50 both very low km\miles and good running engines
Yet there not even in the same class in terms of max speed i think the z50j has bigger valves a better carb and muffler. also it's a 4 speed the 69 was loud and much much slower

I have an Tomos Automatic, it wasnt working and i picked it up for 50$, it now works and it goes 50km/h, btw its 1977 model

I had friend who put that cox fuel in his 70 trail and it hauled ass.
In Finland we can swap the motor for a 190cc engine and get it up to 120km/h.
In Russia we can swap the motor for a 350ci and get it up to 250mph

@@lex1945 lol she likes to help me with videos, I don't force her to be in them. And Charlie doesn't have time either...he is at school, in sports, doing homeork et. and it gets dark at 4:30pm. I suggest you create your own channel that way you can dictate how it is run and what content is shown on it. Some people on this channel like seeing the vintage stuff and I like creating videos to look back on too.

I have a busted ass 1969 one and I’m using a water bottle as the gas tank. Touched 35 today
float level is off. that is why you have to wait to let the carb fill up

They should do 28 mph,not 30 as most people think. The yellow ones a 69 and the red is a 77,restore them they're worth some good coin. The Kawasaki MT or KV75's do 50mph!

My 52cc foot scooter does 29mph , but can climb 30% grade
It should be much quicker. I have a 72 Z50a and I've had it at 37 mph GPS (I weigh 153 lbs). It will do over 20 in second gear. Are you sure you were in 3rd?
You might want to mount that tank and put gas in the tank before worrying about a speed run... wow..
