    Thanks so much for all this work. I just picked up the Z9 and am excitedly full of questions about what it is able to do. Can't wait to get out there and try the autocapture feature, going in armed with this knowledge ahead of time. Cheers!

    Auto Capture is a great feature it works very well, I was never able to get photos of my dog when playing frisbee since I was the one throwing it but now with Auto Capture I can throw the frisbee with my dog running at the camera and getting great shots and it locks right on his eye. I set it up to detect motion and subject detection, when it doesn’t see my dog it stops taking photos. I use Auto Area AF to track him all over the yard.

    nice! I have at least one use case I thought of during this video! I have a Wetlands I visit often and I can see going w/ my z9 w/400 and d850 w/600 and use the z9 to watch a Pileated Nest thats about 300' away so I bring a small tripod and have it waiting for entry/exit from the nest in the tree while I use my 850 captuing the Osprey's, Eagles, Blue Herons etc.!

    The first thing I thought of when this feature debuted was those commercial photographers on the Tail of the Dragon with motorcycles. Set a good composition, hook up to a battery pack and the Z8/9 will basically do the work for you all day. If this works with Snapbridge or Tether you could hotspot your laptop and be adding these to the sales site as the camera works. Days done and you have everything set on the sales page already and job done. Pretty great honestly.

    Great video. This Auto Capture is amazing. Seen a lot of clips online. I think this Auto Capture will be more applicable to sports. But still I think if a wildlife photographer is creative, I am sure it can work in some cases.

    Thanks for the sharing the experience lessons that I can apply. Not sure if anyone mentioned this but I turned off VR on my 400 2.8 F-mount because I could hear the motor running constantly. I noticed this after my battery died pretty quickly and started trouble shooting. VR isn't needed on a tripod anyway. lol. But just something to be aware of.

    Thanks for this video. My personal experience of Auto Capture can be summarized in four words: A work in process. Definitely seems like this was designed by engineers, and not real photographers. It has promise, for sure, but it needs a LOT of refinement...and simplification, not more options.

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its Nikon so its always going to be over engineered ;)

  • @bfs5113
    @bfs5113 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think auto-capture's best case scenario requires a high degree of predictability within a time parameter instead of randomness. Of course, this inefficiency will disappear with faster computing power, AF scanning technology and better algorithm.
    But for now, the subject needs to appear at a location X,Y that it can be detected by AF point(i, i+1, i+2,...,493) within the current AF scanning cycle before it moves to the a new location outside the cycle. So, an object that appears on the top half of the frame can remain undetected if the Z9 is still scanning the bottom half.
    Another issue that is common on CCTV is the time interval between the AF and shutter triggers. Hence, auto-capture may works better in conjunction with the Pre-Release Burst feature.

    • @WILDALASKA

    • @magicalwishlist6616
      @magicalwishlist6616 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have used Pre Capture and the Jpeg are pretty good. I use Capture One and use the Edit with Topaz AI, creating a TIFF and the returned file edits ok. Not a good as a RAW but not terrible either.
      Cannot understand why they don't allow a small RAW file the camera is capturing a RAW image and converting it so writing a compressed RAW should not be a bottle neck...

    This is an amazing feature but I would like to see on a Z30 cheap but a bit better quality than a trap camera. So you can afford to set up a couple of cameras to catch that moment without stressing about the Z9 being stolen. Perhaps even a M 4/3 camera small lens and usually with a wider DOF.

    I updated my firmware to 4.0 went to motion settings and when I press start my display goes dark. Nothing happens. After many different tentatives still the same black screen I decided to reset my menu settings to default. Now I can get into the "start" and change the settings. I put on the same settings you did yours and when I press the record button to start motion detection then start shooting nothing happens. The camera senses nothing. What a pain in the rear. What about the default menu settings that is not making the camera start shooting when a subject moves into the frame I have no idea. Beautiful on theory. 😅😅😅😅 real world, zero results. Very frustrating

      camera traps have been around forever. it is a device you added to your camera with remote shutter wired connection, plus game cameras. It really no difference. AND it takes a lot of pre-planning to get a GOOD shot and even harder to make a wall hanger with it.
