My system for not washing clothes too often....my hangers are white plastic ones. They are for clean clothes. Things that have only been worn once and are not dirty are hung up on blue hangers. Easy!

Frugal habits. I replaced my car recently! My old car was only 22 years young. Saved up for new to me car. It took time, but with auto savings made it easy. New car is 3 years old. As a self employed therapist now, I often discuss the elimination of alcohol because it absolutely can derail plans to improve your life. Alcohol is a neurotoxin and should not even be consumed by people who take any psychiatric medication. I gave it up because I didn’t necessarily like how I felt afterwards even if it’s one drink! Plus, its now the “ in thing” to be a non-drinker so save your health, your mind and your bank account and give it up! Lol

The frugal habits we do is keep our air conditioner (in 113 degree temps) at 79 degrees, this has really helped our AC bill and it's still comfortable in the house. In the cold mos we use a space heater and use less of our ac/heat. We also do inexpensive entertainment activities like going to the lake and having a picnic in the park and hiking all very inexpensive or free.

Instead of using expensive rinse products in my washer, I add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to the rinse. It removes the last of the detergent and makes my clothes smell clean. No vinegar smell remains. Especially good if you are sensitive to perfumes. I also use a dryer ball instead of perfumed dryer sheets. White vinegar, $1.50 at Dollar Tree for multiple washes.

Doesn’t work everywhere, but in New England we have basements. We set up a nice, little tv space down there so on days like this week, with temps in the 90’s, the a.c. Didn’t need to go on.
I don’t mind the heat, so I stayed upstairs but my daughter ( and the dogs) retreated to the basement ( cool 65 degrees) to watch tv, exercise, and work on projects. That small investment years ago( to make a nice space) has more than paid off in ac savings.

We just started our fugal journey in 2024. We have always done some fugal habits but need allot of work with mindful and useful spending. We have already paid off all our CC and just 8k left on our last car payment. Slowly getting there. Our goal is to have a 3 month emergency fund and being debt free (besides the mortgage) by December 2024. It will be tight but as they say a specific challenging goal is strongly motivating. My mother always did all her baking one day a week. That way, the oven was always full when she used it, no wasted energy heating it up, or cooking only one item at a time. And, always make enough for more than one meal, eating left-overs is a great way to save energy and time. And, our salads always came from the garden, fruit to eat fresh, or to make pies etc. also came from the garden. We always had enough to share with neighbours and friends.

Frugal Habits: 1) I keep a list of grocery items that I will need soon. When I make my grocery list using the websites of the 2 grocery stores near me, I check for sales on those items that I need. If it's not on sale, I wait until it is on sale.
    2) I also have my entertainment system things (TV, Apple TV, sound system) plugged into a power strip & I turn the strip off when I'm not using it. It saves money on phantom power charges. If an electronic device has a remote, it draws electricity even when it's off. 3) I use my credit card to buy groceries, gas, repairs to HVAC, etc to get the cash back & pay everything off every month. So far this year I've redeemed $105 that I used to pay part of my balance. This will only work if you pay off the balance every month.

My most recent saver is to learn to live without for a while. Sometimes my old stuff breaks. When it does, I figure out how to not get one right away. I keep a list in my head and watch at curb piles and thrift stores. Most recently, I realized I need a new kitchen scale. I priced them online, but it was 30-40 dollars. Decided I could make do. Looked up how to measure pasta for proper weight. Then I found a scale in a curb pile. Perfect. Next, my 1990 hot pot quit working (goodbye college hot pot 😢) . So sad. Started boiling water for tea on the stove. Found a used hot pot at a free garage sale last weekend. Most modern conveniences aren’t really needed, so there are other ways to do that. I’ll never give up the YMCA though. That helps to keep me as healthy as possible. True about the driving, my kids are always trying to get me to run around. Now they know that mom tries to only go “to town” once a day 😂

We like these types of passive measures. They do require an "investment purchase" (or rods and curtains) but it is on your time and budgetary scheduling. Once you've installed them however, there is minimal fuss, muss, labor, or cost; 'ya just sit back, let them do thier thing, and let the savings build to first pay for the investment cost then reap the tru savings.
If you have a house, look into what are traditionally called "foundation plantings". They used to be standard, before a/c, but can get in the way of repairs and matinenance to the side of the house and even be bad for a foundation. Thier function is to shade the foundation of a house or the exterior space between the side of the building and the ground; keeping the crawl space or basement cool in the summer and warm in the winter can passively mitigate 8nterior temperatures too. A general rule of thumb is nothing closer than 18" from the side of the building; all the more important if you've got an 18" eave over hang and the plants get no rain water. The practical rule of thumb is nothing that a ladder, paint job, gutter cleaning, or roofing will completely kill. The thinking brain towards foundation preservation says nothing with aggressive roots despite being 12 to 36 inches from the building's side. We live in fern country and I like them for an assortment of reasons including being able to trim them down to 2"-3" from the soil's surfaces without killing them. Both American calla lillies and tiger day lilies date back into the 1940's if not earlier and iris where the conditions are tough. We have an enormous number of additional options now adays including a row of sunflowers which help to shade the siding too.

Get the heating fixed if need be.

You Tube has saved me a small fortune in leaning how to fix things around the house. The empowerment that comes with that is amazing. Another big savings on AC is to open my windows at night to cool down the house (when daytime can be 90-100+) and using blackout curtains in bedrooms during the day.

Rather than cool the entire house we often use fans in a room if the person there prefers it to be cooler than someone else in another area of the house might. I've discovered that the ice pack often keeps me from needing to even use the fan or as the temp is going up it allows me to not turn the fan up higher when using both items. Debbie

With only 1 to 4 people at the table, consider making that 6 to 8 serving casserole, crockpot concoction, dessert, etc... Serve half as a "fresh cook" and let the other half cool while eating. Put into the fridge when cooled to stiffen up then spoon onto a piece of plastic wrap. Use that plastic wrap and maybe another to make it freezer ready, write the date and what it is, then freeze. With the power of a microwave, unwrap then thaw and heat on those nights you dont want to cook.

I dress in layers in the winter, differently in fall and spring, and often even in the summer any more. Layers, especially winter layers, can add up to quite the quantity of clothing in the laundry. For myself, I have returned to examining which layer is actually getting "dirty" and needs laundering then switch up the layer level for some additional wearings. The layer next to the body gets body oils et al. The layer on the outside shows the spills, dribbles, dust, and dirt etc...The middle layer(s) have neither body oils nor spills unless there has been some sweating going on or youve had a spill beyond a dribble. And then, a little dribble (and stains after laundering) doesn't show when its covered up by a top layer.

Frugal Habits! I turn the water temperatre down in the summer and reduce the time the water is on for, the water takes less time to heat up from the mains during summer and I don't like a super hot bath (only in winter) but prefer a warm soak, also turn down the shower temperature so have a cooler shower. Our plugs in UK mean we don't need to unplug eveything just flip the switch to off and the power is off. When cooking I make at least double and then freezer for later when it's hot and I don't want to have the oven on. Love those leftovers they are your future gift to yourself! Even if a couple of spoons of corn are left over I add these to tiny containers and freeze, same with mashed potatoes freeze in portion sizes in bags then I can add to another dish another time, I do the same with jar sauces. If veggies start to mount up then make a fritatta with them all and eat for lunches and with salad.
