I was a rave DJ at the time Whiskeytown came about. On a road trip with my big brother to a Montana family reunion, after hours of he enduring my obnoxious break beats, it was his turn to choose the music. He put Whiskeytown, Strangers Almanac in the old disc player. That next hour or so on that drive changed my life forever.
This song is so beautiful it belongs in a museum. I was fortunate enough to show up one night in about 1999 at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle and see them perform. They started out with 16 days. Closed playing Fleetwood Mac. I listened to Strangers Almanac every day for a year. It changed me, there is no question. This song drips with the soul of so many.....
Dunno if anyone cares but if you're stoned like me during the covid times then you can watch pretty much all of the latest movies and series on Instaflixxer. Have been binge watching with my brother these days :)
A very underrated band. I remember a friend giving me this album. Nobody was interested . Years later those same people were raving about Ryan Adams and asked had I heard of him. Ha ha .
I don't recall a full show. When it originally aired what I remember was the Old 97s being the other band. That said, their entire performance (as opposed the half hour that aired) is online or at least used to be.
Heart wrenching lyrics and a soulful melody. I don't think song writing gets much better. Question: most comments assume this is a story of WW2, but I think it's Korea... Eisenhower sent him to war... Presidents send men to war, generals send them to battle. Am I reading the lyrics too closely?
When i first heard this song....i right away assumed it was about Korea. Yeah....Eisenhower was president at the time. I'm a history freak....so i'm very touchy about things related to history. I don't know WHERE someone would get World War 2....because then either Roosevelt or Truman would have had to "send him to war". Plus it would make sense if the friends' mom's lover was during the Korean War....because she would be old enough to be the friends' mom's age. Otherwise...he would have to say...."the fella that broke your GRANDMAS heart" hahaha
Guys Eisenhower was the supreme allied commander in Europe during World War 2. He was responsible for carrying out the allied invasion of France. So He is saying "Eisenhower sent him to war" The general sent him to the beaches of Normandy.
He was very close to his grandparents. I wonder if his grandfather was in the service. It brought tears to my eyes as my dad passed from Multiple Myeloma in 2021 from Agent Orange. He was an Officer in Vietnam, Highly decorated and the SR Advisor for Hamburger Hill/MACV Team 3 and the Phoenix Program. This will forever remind me of my dad and extended military family
Well I found a bunch of letters Written for the fellow who broke your momma's heart And the envelope folds smelled of her ancient perfume I'll bet she didn't know How to respond before the blankets of snow Caught him out wandering alone With no place to go There were stars in the sky There were houses on the hill And there were bottles of pills that were easy to buy Keeping her warm from the oncoming storm Well I found them in the northwest corner of the attic in a box Labeled tinsel and lights Didn't know what I was I looking for Maybe just a blanket or artifacts Eisenhower sent him to war He kept her picture in his pocket that was closest to his heart And when he hit shore Must have been a target for the gunmen There were stars in the sky There were bunkers on the hill and there were caskets to fill Where he would lie Shrouded in the red white and blue with the stripes There were stars in the sky There were houses on the hill And there were bottles of pills that were easy to buy To keep her warm from the oncoming storm
I can understand wanting joint custody* (weed joke) but pet support is interesting, especially in this case bc she seemed to be the one with the deepest pockets. Ryan has a solid fan base and has done well for himself financially but definitely not wealthy as you and I believe he deserves to be. Catch 22 in where you want your favorites to be rewarded but you don't want them to be too mainstream
j sierra, you have the timeline intent regardless of which war: i'm not sure how many listeners get even that as is true of how many patriots (get) WAR
this is one of the most lovely underrated songs that still makes me cry..so many years and it still gets me.

As a big brother myself--that's what we're here for.
If y'all still comes here to listen to this music I love you your taste in music is out of this world

This might be my favorite Whiskeytown song. I was lucky enough to see then on tour before Ryan went solo
this belongs in a museum

I have so much love for this man!!! This is beautiful!!!
Brilliant writing. I find it hard to believe he isn’t a huge star.
I love this song❤
Ryan Adams is the man. But the emotion in these whiskeytown tracks before he went solo was different. Miss this shit.
This is such a beautiful, sad song. Makes me cry.
This segment was taken from Austin City Limits Season 23, Episode 11: Old 97's/Whiskeytown, which aired on April 11, 1998 on PBS.
crazy it's been that long. nineties were better days, for sure.
Caitlin's violin and harmonies are a big part of why this song is so great.
I wish he woulda made a record with them like every other solo album.. there was magic with those bandmates
Strangers Almanac
Beautiful. Just beautiful.
Even though I have rarely shown it, I have always loved this band.
This is unreal. So good.
oh god the feels ;_; I never like country music but this is beautiful
I saw this on PBS way back in 1998....good memories, they had the full show on on ACL

Wow! Thank you for posting this video! How nice!
Great song
beautiful and sad
Nice version....

Probably just because Roosevelt or Truman don't fit the meter as well, historicity is not the point

i love caitlin cary
Please post any other Whiskeytown stuff! There aren't many videos of the live shows online!
Well I found a bunch of letters
Written for the fellow who broke your momma's heart
And the envelope folds smelled of her ancient perfume
I'll bet she didn't know
How to respond before the blankets of snow
Caught him out wandering alone
With no place to go
There were stars in the sky
There were houses on the hill
And there were bottles of pills that were easy to buy
Keeping her warm from the oncoming storm
Well I found them in the northwest corner of the attic in a box
Labeled tinsel and lights
Didn't know what I was I looking for
Maybe just a blanket or artifacts
Eisenhower sent him to war
He kept her picture in his pocket that was closest to his heart
And when he hit shore
Must have been a target for the gunmen
There were stars in the sky
There were bunkers on the hill and there were caskets to fill
Where he would lie
Shrouded in the red white and blue with the stripes
There were stars in the sky
There were houses on the hill
And there were bottles of pills that were easy to buy
To keep her warm from the oncoming storm
Such a great song. I dont like seeing Ryan in bad shape. It makes me sad.. Such a great song
+Tom Richards He is one tough Hombre. His new LP is great and Mandy Moore is gone, so he will have lot's to write about.
Mandy's gone? I don't keep up with much of the personal stuff but I should have known
whentherope Yes they have split and get this she wants "PET SUPPORT" from Ryan. Filed in California so who knows? Fucking Pet Support.

wow!
Love this, my favorite part is when his hair is messed up.
Sounds like it’s Farrar singing.. Beautiful song.
💖
Edward Scissorhands on the keyboard.
Truly impressive that he can play at all
That hair! Anyone else just want to give Ryan a damn haircut?
Yes! Me too!!!
Guys, this thread is a little to self referential, don’t we agree?
Must have driven to the gig in a convertible.
j sierra, you have the timeline intent regardless of which war: i'm not sure how many listeners get even that as is true of how many patriots (get) WAR
good shizz
Who is this bass player Jenni Snyder? She still perform?
Michael Penny She opened a hair salon in Durham, NC years ago and still runs it, I believe.
ed fROMOHIO!
He can’t be topped. Fuck the haters
why didn't he do summer of '69?
lul
WTF ?
Many people confuse Ryan Adams with Bryan Adams who does Summer of '69. This dude is joking about that.
Korean War song
this belongs in a jail
Somebody disinfect that mic, please. ugh.
