Fleet Weathering- Rolling Stock

  • I've been working on getting the rolling stock and locomtove rosters weathered- at least an intial dose to take away the shine and help everythig blend together. This video is an overviewof my current "fleet weathering" process. It covers mostly rolling stock- some boxcars, coverd hoppers, a caboose, and peaks at a Pennsy GP7.
    I still use the Vallejo Hobby Sprays for the initial underframe/roof weathering, but have migrated to the airbrush for better control and results (sometimes!) on the bodies. If the mood strikes me I may then use washes of Vallejo Model Color or Model Air, Vallejo Washes, and various brands of Pigments. Once I'm done playing I spray on a final Flat or Satin finish coat.
    Up next I may post a (shorter) video on several locomotives I finished- the Penny GP7, a NYC Sharknose A/A set, and a NYC FA2 A/A set. I can also show the Reading C630. In addition, I did several Brass milk cars. These were factory painted but are now old and weary looking!

    This weathering method was very helpful. It's not excessive weathering, it's very natural weathering. I will try it too. Thank you for posting the video.

    Sweet - I love weathered trucks and wagons - makes them seem far less toy like. Thank you !

    Anyone who nitpicks any part of your railroad should just be politely asked to leave!! LOL You have a very high end railroad at every level, I hope mine looks half as good as yours!

    Great visit, Rob! I really like how you just go for it on the mass weathering. You can always come back and add the heavier grime, rust, etc. Your method gets it done! Thanks for the lesson!

    Heh, I also have a garage spray booth just like yours, including a trash cart. I use mine mostly for primer and flat varnish spray can applications. But since in live in NE Wisconsin, it's seasonal only! I have a set of five Kadee boxcars that now need more weathering than just a flat spray. So this video has been quite helpful. Thanks for sharing your methods. By the way, my opinion is that a CONSISTENT approach to weathering throughout the layout and fleets of locos and rolling stock is a key component of success. That is one of the reasons I consider your work to be of museum quality.

    Thanks for sharing. I just ordered a can of Panzer Gray and a can of German Gray. Wow $12 each. In Nscale I should be able to do a lot of cars. LOL Thanks again for sharing. Can't wait to see your next video.

      Vincent- yes, but they are big cans...I tend to get mine at Scale Hobbyist, but they have been in and out of stock recently.

    Are you telling me railroads don't wash and shammy dry with microfiber and apply several coats of turtle wax?

    • @robbennett1965
      @robbennett1965 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually....back in the early diesel days (late 40's-early 50's) many actually DID wax the locos- I have read that the Reading Railroad told their maintenance crews to wash and wax the new diesels. Of course this didn't last too long!

    I recommend painting the grills in the engines black, its quick, easy and ads a lot of realism...

    A piece of simple cardboard held as to keep overspray to a minimum might work for the more recessed areas on the under belly of those hoppers.

      Indeed! Good idea- will do thi snext batch of covered hoppers. Thanks!

    hi Rob. Great video - very nice weathering. Question - how and what do you use to clean wheel treads and pick up surfaces after weathering (and also periodically) especially locomotives ?

      Dave- I use Flory Models Sanding sticks- the Weathering/Polishing ones- they are very fine and don't scratch the wheels at all. I get them here: www.highaltitudehobbies.com/flory-models-products/flory-models-weatheringpolishing-greenwhite-skinny-12-pack

    Rob,
    Your READING caboose could use a couple of ACI identification labels to more match the prototype photos. Its a neat detail that I have been adding to my rolling stock. Please....what is the manufacturer of your portable spray booth??
    Thanks for sharing. I appreciate your help and knowledge.

      I did notice that- do you have a good source for these in HO scale? I purchased the spary booth at Spray Gunner: spraygunner.com/accessories/spray-booth-air-cleaning/portable-hobby-spray-booth-by-no-name-brand/ but I see it is now showing as out of stock.

    Rob, when you spray a flat finish, what paint do you use? How do you avoid obscuring the lettering?

    • @robbennett1965
      @robbennett1965 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      James- I have been using Vallejo Matt Varnish, Item 26-518: www.scalehobbyist.com/catagories/Paint_and_Construction/matte-varnish/VLJ00026518/product.php?s=3&t=1&u=1&micr=770&pg=1&ppp=48&sb=stocknumber_a&so=d&man=VLJ The lettering will not be obscured when using a light coat of the finish.
