    Ashlin, I can hardly tap my foot, but I love your lesson on New Orleans trumpeting. So many musicians seem to want to start fresh with an invention. I love New Orleans music because it's as you say: you all learn from the past and the past masters pass it on, so when the Trumpet Mafia plays, we can also hear the roots.

    Love it Ashlin,
    That lapel mic's got my right speaker sounding like it's #$%^&ed up everytime you growl!

      Playing this form of music is not like playing Mozart. What he’s saying is that you it’s hard to reinvent the wheel; take the art form, learn it, and then add your style.

    Great video! I do hear a strange noise when you play directly at the camera, is that because air is leeking though your teeth? Not that it negatively influences sound, but I'm just wondering

      Pascal Dijkhuizen I’m pretty sure what you are hearing is me humming (growling) and since i have a mic near my throat it really stands out. Usually you would just hear the growl from the horn, but here you can hear how I actually make that sound, it’s more of a hum than a growl on that side of the horn.

    Why is he vocalizing?

    • @michaelfoxbrass
      @michaelfoxbrass 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It can shape the tone quality. Vocalizing the same trumpet note (or an octave below that note) doesn’t change the tone much if at all, but when he wants to add some “grit or growl” to a note, you’ll notice he vocalizing a different note than he’s playing.
