It is often kings who make bad successors. Henry V was considered a great king. However, his wars against France meant he was never home to produce more heirs and secure the dynasty (another piece in the wars of the roses) and he spent a lot of treasury money on his wars. Louis XIV was a glorious king but he spent a huge amount of money and created an environment disconnected from the real world and that encouraged disrespectful behaviour, thus bringing down the monarchy. I take issue with one part of this otherwise excellent video and that's that gladiators were the lowest of the low. That's not really true. While most of them were indeed slaves, they were also the sporting stars of their day, with fans and supporters following their bouts. The criminals you mention were sent to die in the ring, usually against wild animals rather than gladiators, as an alternative to just executing them. Also, it was indeed possible to become a gladiator just by volunteering and plenty of free Roman citizens did, whether in order to pay off debts or just because they wanted to do it. It didn't have the stigma that's been retroactively placed on it centuries later. Also, fights to the death weren't common. Grudge matches happened, for sure, and fighters did die - it was a dangerous sport, after all - but there was usually a referee in the ring who had the power to stop the fight if things went too far. A good reason for doing it this way was that because slaves were property, losing one in the arena meant the owner was out of pocket and could claim compensation for the loss. So if, for instance, the emperor for some reason wanted a gladiator to die, he could expect to receive a bill from the owner to reimburse him for the loss. After all, if the gladiators always killed each other, there would be no champions and no fans supporting individual fighters (evidence for which we find in places like Pompeii). At the end of the day the arena was a business venture and nobody makes money by snuffing out their own talent. So criminals were executed in the ring and provided much of the blood and gore, but the gladiators fought until the fight was stopped by the referee or if one fighter submitted, and more rarely by the death of one of them. Most of what we "know" about gladiators has been heavily influenced by the span of time and Hollywood.
