One of the most unique and most iconic voices ever. One of the best singers of all time
Gabe Giordano very very strong voice, and obviously great technique behind it since he has been able to keep singing the same way
This is genius! Byrne is a genius. He made a movie in the eighties called "True Stories", but I don't think many people saw it. His brilliance translates to the screen and it's one of the best craziest movies I've ever seen. I would watch it over and over and over when I was sixteen!
I own that movie...absolutely love it, those who haven't seen it don't know what they are missing
sweetlymiserable it's such a good movie!
"True Stories" is a true David Byrne product. It fits just right between John Waters and Jonathan Demme's movies ! Too bad he did not directed other movies after that one...
I watch it over and over and I'm 50 and have been for years.
one of the best artists of our time
My Goddess. That man is a legend. And Thomas Dolby? Another legend. There together, in front of that crowd performing a song I love. Sometimes the stars DO align. Sometimes life brings you these little gifts.
That was quite something. Really, quite something.
David Byrne is so impressive.
I'm not sure what kind of people would complain about this guy's voice. His voice and his style are unique. I hate to be one to bitch about today's music, but with all the autotune and what we're exposed to today, rarely do we get the chance to hear really distinctive voices
A brilliant version of a brilliant song by the brilliant David Byrne.
Love it! Forgot how good a singer David Byrne is! And Thomas Dolby there too!
he has a good strong voice. Suited for good Scottish ballads and wedding songs. I like to hear his words, which strangely for pop songs, are of great value.
David Byrne is awesome.
Everytime I see him it always reminds me of when I first got Windows XP and found his song 'Like Humans Do' in Windows Media Player
Brilliant!!! He's still got it!! Keep on performin!!!
Two of my idols of the 80's on a stage! Great!
Really enjoy the (Thomas) Dolby surround sound here.
Byrne is a superb singer - Always loved this song!
I love the fact that he does not sing in the traditional sense. Even better he sings just like that guy out of Talking heads-brilliant, man maybe we would be better of with nothing but flowers. Keep the dream. Paul Robinson author.
You probably know this, but David Byrne is the lead singer of talking heads.
I love this reality. Thank you David.
Its interesting to see the comments about this song especially the negative ones. I love this version of the song and its a bonus for me that Thomas Dolby was accompanied him. This song was released over 25 years ago and live not a studio version. Byrnes voice still sounds as good as it did when this song first came out. I think those who are complain wish they could have the talent and success but since thats not possible they bash anonymously on the internet
The BEST vocalist out of the NYC Avant Garde music scene from the early 80's..Hell, just the BEST period.
He looks very charming !!! I love him.
thank you David Byrne!!
Maybe it's just me, but I just got home from the David Byrne & St. Vincent concert in Reykjavík Iceland and it was hands down THE best concert I have ever been to. Scrap the "little too old" bit will you please. I wasn't a fan. "Psycho Killer" brought me there so to speak ;-) and didn't think that the rest would be for me, but today I understood what real music and talent is. This was an experience. Their album received excellent reviews. You might say it's just not your taste. Fair enough.
WOW, this is beautiful. I love the original, but this is blowing me away. :O Such incredible talent on that stage.
He could see the future! Nothing but flowers talks about malls and businesses being abandoned and overgrown with flowers! This was in 1988. . .20 yrs. later, what he sang about is happening!
True.
And as things fell apart, nobody paid much attention
Passion makes the world go round. Love just makes it a safer place.
Magic David Byrne perfeito
@eatingperson Technology, Entertainment, and Design... David Byrne has been a pioneer of all three for over twenty years.
On a side note - for audio engineering nerds like myself, he's also a bit of a hero.
So, you might not dig his tunes, but there's a reason why people like him (or Imogen Heap) are asked to perform at TED
Excellent Mr Byrne
Sensacional artista !!!!!
Sem cométários . . .
Um gênio !!!!
Genius!
Wow, these dislikes are a joke...David Byrne is genius
you got it, you got it :)
Very true.
ok his voice sounds just the same. treated it with care I guess! appreciate this version, thank you.
I Don't care what they say I'll always love your talent and music performances
What a beautiful version
David Byren is so beautiful and sweet.👌🎼❤❤❤
I dig this. Byrne is a hero of mine. I'm gonna go write a song.
Magic!
Byrne's a legend. He really aged now. It's quite surprising. Loving the trippy psyhedelic Hawaiian sounds. Good to see he's still got it. Talking Heads reform please! XD
DB is my musical crush 🥰 ❤️ 👏🏼
Happy birthday David
1:39 just for the beauty of the clap
this is so lovely!
What's everyone talking about. It sounded great! Great new take on a classic.
My only complaint is that it's too short! Why?
Us talking heads love his voice
I always wondered about the meaning of this song.
Definitely an anti-conservation bend to it. He took the less obvious route in favor of irony on this one.
It's both. An environmentalist who gets his wish but misses modern life.
I like to think of the real-life equivalent being an environmentalist who is actually out in nature and can't stand the bugs or the rain or lack of a roof over their head and a climate-controlled building.
I'm an environmentalist myself but I have no illusions that nature will drive you crazy or murder you given the chance XD
A hero.
Wonderful
@GuppyPal
He knows hes not the greatest singer, he sings with feeling and emotion. He's said this is interviews many times when the talking heads first came out. Its not about what you hear sometimes its just what you feel...and he does that.
The meaning and lyrics of this song seem almost like they were MADE for a TED Talk haha.
Regardless - I love this song. I call for a Talking Heads revival!
Thanks! Great song!
I'd like to hear a lecture by Dolby or Byrne too!
Mark Bellis There is one on architecture and music.
By Byrne
I ❤️ DB
My initials are TED and I approve of this video.
what the heck you guys, this was wonderful.
fuckin goosebumps......magical if you get it, then you get it.....good is just good, there doesn't have to be a reason
To all the bone-heads who unsubscribed to T'E'Dtalks because of this video - none of you obviously listened to the lyrics to the song - there is a strong message there. Not to mention David Byrne is still quite 'E'ntertaining to this day ; )
This song is genius - I see it as deliciously ironic directed meditation / wish fulfillment and not a sarcastic take on hypocritical eco values as some might say.
Exactly. Often, less is more.
just fuckin amazing, either you understand why its just amazing or you just dont get it!
Byrne just has an interesting performance voice. Go listen to his others and you'll see he sounds pretty much the same. Personally I find it dynamic and interesting.
Interesting lyrics...
Katalyzt
@eatingperson wow. RELAX.
@Schindlabua I HAD A FEELING IT WAS HIMMM HAHAHAHAH
Wooow♨️😎😍😍😍
awww I wish he was wearing his crazy big jackets :)
I'm not sure this is the best use of time of the world's greatest minds.
Ah, well. 3 minutes.
I think I like this better than the Talking Heads version.
The lyrics were messed up after We caught a rattlesnake, now we got something for dinner, it is supposed to be WE GOT IT, WE GOT IT......., NOT you got it, you got it, I love this song and when I goofed up the lyrics I was hard on myself
Thats Dolby back on the keys.
soylent green is david
@otur1 That's the ironic attraction of David Bryne and the Talking Heads. Listen to "Once In A Lifetime" and hear the soulful plea for clarity of a man on the edge of an epiphany or a nervous breakdown. Same as it ever was!
@DavidSabine
You forgot to mention Björk (Bjork).
Fantastic. But, I really miss that Johnny Marr guitar...
Much like Zappa, this guy loves experimenting with new sounds!
@peazythatsmeazy yeah i would definitely recommend looking a little deeper into his work. also check out his wiki. having a unique voice has always been part of his appeal.
He has really interesting eyes.
@eatingperson I'm sure it has nothing to do with his decades-long influence on the arts. David Byrne is one of the great musicians of our time.
@IHHPCANADA
opinion. gotta love it.
❤
@eatingperson yes its not like hes a skilled keyboardist that has a plethora of hits starting with 1982's "She blinded me with science".
@TheEarthAbides Entertainment?
shocked at the general disdain for his musical approach. I think it is different and does not carry a wide range of tones but that doesn't make it awful. I think it makes it appealing. You can focus on the lyrics and it doesn't sound out of tune with the music but rather fits nicely. I think that most of the "he sounds like a mental patient" responses are from people who are used to "vocalists" like Christina Aguilera who need to hit a full scale of notes for each word. Simplicity is wonderful.
It isn't a ted talk unless you cut some power lines
@otur1 And what of John Lennon, Mick Jaggar, Bob Dylan, Eddie Vedder?
109 people most obviously don't got it.
i also believe that the many dislikes is because the song was butchered for time, if we recall the song in actuality is longer than three minutes
@hkdtech 1. to indicate to TED exactly where my breaking point was
2. because some people seem to think we ought to automatically worship TED no matter what rubbish they post.
@LeMegasandwich lol! but he was good in Talking Heads ;)
105 people were sacrificed for agriculture.
So who's that old guy on stage singing David Byrne songs?
@apocaRUFF Actually, if you're invited to talk they waive the conference fee and pay for airfare and hotel stay.
@eatingperson Totally agree.
I have never heard of The Talking Heads, David Byrne or this song.........and now I know why
@StanleyCarpel because he refuses to play with the old band is my guess.
marry me David Byrne
... if this is paradise, I wish I had a lawn mower ...
@eatingperson The Talking Heads were a rather celebrated and
successful band for many years. Perhaps you should check them out
before being so critical. (hey, he's getting old as well....give him a
break) Anyway, a fucking legend and musical genius.
~be well
@costumebot I don't even watch American Idol. I was just using it as an example. And I listen to all music genres other than country (don't care for it). He has a very limited range... I'm not trying to be mean or condescending or anything. He just isn't as vocally talented as many vocal artists.
3:00 is that applause in appreciation? Or the kind you hear when people have just been liberated from a fucking nightmare?
Definitely not Byrne's best performance.
David Byrne is a god damn marvel of musical goodness. The clapping idiots
seem to drain his magical energy. (IMO)
Eh, he seems a bit off...sufficiently o.k.
