Coming from a family sawmill and cabinet shop background I think that repurposing timber for doors and window frames is an excellent and cost-effective way for you to do this, providing you can get the timber at a good price. You have all of the equipment needed to process all of it, and it adds to your skill set and gives endless pride and pleasure to see the finished article and say "I made that".

As someone who had his hearing destroyed by industrial noise, it worries me that you don't use adequate hearing protection during your work! If you are not careful, you'll be deaf by your sixties. Get and use best quality ear defenders when using power tools.

Dan, I always found that the fastest, easiest way to JOINT wood was to set an outfeed and infeed roller stand exactly flat with the jointer top, of course have the wood cup side down, then from all the way back on the infeed end of the board push it gently and slowly, with one finger if you can, all the way across the top of the machine. Do NOT apply downward pressure! If the blades are sharp and you push slowly there should not be any chatter. The only exception may be the first few and last few inches of the board when it becomes very light and you may have to apply some gentle pressure with you fingertips. If you push down, you are falsely removing the cup from the board and you may grind to nothing and wonder why the first side is not getting flat and you have wasted a lot of time and an entire board. NO down pressure, especially when you have two, three and four meter boards. The planer will apply plenty of pressure for the second side after you flatten the first one. Of course, before you plane, rough cut the lengths you will need beforehand. A second quick tip about gluing. I used short foam roller cover pieces that i would cut to a one or two inch length on the bandsaw, (safer) and place on a short roller frame, squirt some titebond on a scrap piece of cardboard. You get nice, even coverage, not too much glue nor too little, but the best part is you don't have glue squeezing out and running everywhere that is then in the wood where you want to finish later. Throw the cover piece away when finished and cut a new one the next time you glue. They're pennies apiece, literally!

For windows and doors a frame press is a very helpful tool. You can get them cheap all over the land.

@@annettev8362 - Annette, Orbost is just down the road, we are the other side of Melbourne and Orbost is a five hour drive ! Colloquially Aussies say everything is “just down the road !” Australia as you would know is a big country.
      Have a great weekend.

Well, same here in California. It takes 9-10 hours to get to the Northern California border
