Your an amazing Triumph Master Mechanic; you helped me get thru a '71 Trophy, '72 Bonneville, and currently doing a '71 Tiger.....you produce the very best Triumph videos........Steve in Maine, USA

      Hi Jeff :-)
the stand has certainly taken some hammer over the years, starting on the stand and wot-not.
Should not be long now if all goes well.

      Hi Jon :-)
I might just run a weld along the foot as it is quite worn, a regular spray with chain lube will do me.
      cheers :-)

yup plastic oil line, no damage to be seen so I reckon I got away with it.

I was just thinking while watching the last one, if you would remember/bother to do the side stand and lo and behold here we have it. Fixed - get in. Those stick welders are effective but pretty crude by the look of it. I've never welded, but I can see where the expression 'strike an arc' comes from. I'll get round to it eventually, maybe able to score a MIG off a mate for a bit of a go! What paint do you use for that? hammerite?

+pgod1960 literally one of the best ways to start the arc going is to strike it across the metal like a match, which like you said is where the term comes from. Also you can just tap it on it repeatedly but that doesn't always work.. The cool part is they now have auto start stick leads that have a button you can push to get the arc going. If you are going to play around with a stick I suggest a generator powered one.. For some reason they are MUCH easier to start and maintain the arc.. I miss welding, one of two places I've ever felt like I belonged, like I was doing what I was meant to was behind a welding helmet... the other being in a booth with a respirator on doing automotive painting.

      Hi Pete :-)
Next time you're here you can have a go, MIGs are great once you get the feed right.
I will be using Tekaloid coach enamel, great paint and does not tend to chip.

      Hi Otis :-)
most of the motor driven welders are DC which makes a difference I have never seen the auto start type.
Tapping the rod will break away the flux as the rod tends to burn up inside making it hard to strike, I usually tap it on the floor to break the end off.

lunmad yeah I've seen them before unfortunately I can't find a video of one to link you. They are pretty cool little gadgets.

wow you are lucky that it was just worn, my dad's broke the tab off the frame of his T150V. Before you weld you should hit it with the grinder to get all the rust and shit off of where you want to weld so it doesn't contaminate your weld. Also make sure you have a really good ground. Not talkin out me ass here, went to school for that.. Thought I was gonna be a welder for my life's work till my scoliosis took all physical labour off the table for me.
Best thing you can do is get yourself a decent little auto dimming helmet, check harbor freight if you guys can get it shipped there, you can get em as low at $40 US sometimes. Makes a HUGE difference when you can use both hands to steady the stick.

      Hi Otis :-)
I know the early Triumphs had a problem with the side stand lugs, they beefed up the mount on mine and later models. I hear what you say with cleaning as I was only filling it was clean enough, if I'd been joining spotless it would of been. I have used the auto dim masks brilliant, for the amount of welding I do this one does the job.
Having had two discs removed L4&5 I understand your problem, try not let it get you down

lunmad yeah well the other problem is I live in Commifornia (California some call it) and the lawyers in this state/ the insurance companies that control the welding jobs and whatnot won't allow me to take the job saying I'm a liability... It's not like in the south or other places in the world where they really don't care. Thanks though

try getting a proper helmet which you don't need to hold. stick welding is way easier with two hands, and by doing it like you did especially on the under side you will get lots of slag inclusion and porosity which could lead to quicker wear and tear! if you do a lot of welding invest in a MIG welder as you'll get a smoother weld pattern overall and won't get porous blobs due to numerous attempts striking up. keep up the good work and enjoy the video😀

      Hi Pete :-)
This was the first arc I'd struck up for years, I could of got hold of a reactive helmet and a mig but the gear I had was on hand.
The weld didn't turn out bad and maybe the odd hole will hold grease :-D
I did enjoy the welding so might just invest in a new helmet, then I'll have to start looking for stuff to stick together!
      Cheers.

      Hi Steve :-)
I removed the main stand years ago (still have it) because I used to scrape it cornering most of the time.
Even now I catch the side stand now and again!
