Lugdunum didnt strike coins during Gallienus's reign :)

@ClassicalNumismatics sorry I misread your message. I had a look in sear and couldn't find an exact match for my coin. The source which is where I got Lugdunum from was OCRE, as I don't have access to RIC. It's making me wonder if OCRE can be trusted. So thank you, I will do more delving.
@@ClassicalNumismatics So, reading a bit about it it seems like the Lugdunum mint was only established later in the century by Diocletian... on the other hand, other sources claim it was established under Augustus...
If there was no Lugdunum Gallienus ants, any thoughts on why so many 'GERMANICVS MAX V' & 'GERMANICVS MAXIMVS' antoninianii are misattributed to Lugdunum?? I'm seeing pretty prominent dealers doing this. I have one that was attributed as such, but if this is so they must actually be Colonia Aggripinensis?
Just curious on the debate here, because it seems like many people seem to think these mints similar to the Colonia engravings are Lugdunum.
Hi Leo, great intro to the mints of Gallienus! The main reference today for this coinage is Goebl's MIR volume 36 on the coinage of Valerian and Gallienus (some books containing volumes 43 and 44, including Regalianus-Dryantilla and Macrianus-Quietus). Also to be recommended is Roger Bland (and others) "The Cunetio Hoard." RIC V is mostly obsolete.
I have cleaned quite a few Gallienus' coins over the years. Most are from Siscia but I have a piece from Rome, and a fantastic full silvered piece from Antioch. Interestingly, many coins I clean of his in good silver tend to be very porous on the surface due to the low silver content.
Gallienus coins are really great to collect, one of the best for begginers, along with gordian III
Your Gallienus coins are amazingly high quality compared to mine. For example, your coins don't have massive cracks in them. Boy, mine do. I have a hugely split Gallienus coin that was struck so off-center that most of the lettering is completely off the coin and the very unsilvered metal is so thin that with a little sharpening you might be able to shave with it. Those Siscia boys were totally phoning it in that day. Most of the other coins I have FEEL like coins: you can tell they have some kind of intrinsic value just by holding them. Not so with some of my Gallienus coins, which literally feel as cheap and worthless as pieces of scrap metal might. They are one step above wooden nickels. And that's actually why I like them. (I cleaned them myself so I know they aren't cheap fakes, although why anyone would make an imitation of these is hard to imagine.)

I only have Gallienus coins from the late period, that is more or less copper. But I am happy with the latest acquisition, the aureilian with hippocampus.

Great vid. Man I really liked that Colonia mint gallienus you have. If I had to pick one it would be my Gallienus from the Samosata mint. 255-6ad. Vota Orbis reverse is very interesting on it as well. Thx for all your work.

Can you do a video talking about the Aurelian, Diocletian, and Constantian monetary reforms. More specifically the coins that were introduced and what they were tariffed at in relation to prior currencies. Mainly because I’m confused at the relation between the silver coins.

Nice set you got there. Can't say I have a favorite, cuz they're all from Siscia and what you said is brutally true about their quality; all the ones I've cleaned really aren't anything to brag about, it's peak Imperial decline without caveat. I'm gonna have to snag me one of those cuirass/shield/spear types though cuz that's just snazzy looking.
I was wondering if you'll ever do a video on Manus Dei iconography, I only know of a few types but it's a really fascinating design from the transition from paganism to Christianity, the ones I have are Arcadius crowned by the Manus Dei on the obverse and a posthumous Constantine with the emperor riding a quadriga into the heavens with the Manus Dei outstretched to receive him, could be a cool motif to explore. I feel like maybe you showed the Arcadius one on this channel before but I don't remember, I just remember getting really excited at the design when I first saw it and jumped on one the second I could.
Great video! I managed to finally track down a Gallienus sestertius, which tend to be scarce and highly sought-after. The style seems to be fairly functional. Were they mainly struck in western mints perhaps?
My coin of Gallienus is none of the ones presented here. The head is bigger than any of the coins shown here taking most of the center of the coin. Weird ...
Which mint is it from? There are varieties in designs, of course.
@@ClassicalNumismatics Not really sure. The front and back looks like mostly like (80%) the Rome Mint. But the God Jupiter has a bird in front of his feet or something like that. and he is taller touching the top of the coint splitting the text in two. I purchased it fom a box of coins in Barcelona for 10 euros not knowing what I get. So no details were provided.
