First drummer I've ever seen play this song entirely correctly. Stellar transcription!

Stanley Draughon thanks so much man! Yeah it drives me nuts when people do covers of songs like this and miss the most important parts!

I'm working on this with my 10 year old. Went down to the basement because in the choruses, he was going to the ride, but still reaching over with his left hand to open the hat per the verses. I told him he didn't need to do that - it's just ride. And he said "Actually papa, he doesn't go to the ride at all in the chorus". Went back and listened, and damn if he wasn't right. I don't hear any ride either. :)
    Still a great lesson!

Great tutorial, I’m 58 and bought an electronic kit, have been air drumming for years, never had a lesson and can kinda play along but not exactly, can’t get the second hi hat in, keeps throwing me off so I just dropped it, can do the first one no problem, even tried adopting your robotic arm movement to do the first hi hat crash, thanks man

Thanks for posting this drum lesson! I 'm a guitar and bass player / teacher, but almost a total newbie at drums. I chose Mary Jane's Last Dance as my 2nd drum song to learn, because I was playing it (on guitar) with some friends recently.

Honestly, it was just the original track. I've just played the song so many time that I pretty much have it nailed. haha. I did search here on youtube and found a Rockband version without drums. It's a little different sounding. Don't think it's actually Petty. You could probably but it though somewhere. I hope the video has helped. Keep in touch if you need anything! :)

Nice, but you really should have the kick drum alternate beats between measures 1 and 2. The kick drum pattern changes throughout the song, but the 3 note pattern is on 36 measures out of 97, so it does occur quite often during the entire song.
1st measure: 1 eighth note then 2 eighth notes. 2nd measure: 1 eighth note then 1 sixteenth note + 2 eighth notes.
