  • Testing spark plug: copper vs ruthenium. I like how precise and focused the ruthenium spark plug spark is. Definitely a function of the pointy center electrode.

    I have several NGK Ruthenium continuous review videos here on YT. I totally believe in these plugs as the last plugs my car will ever need. I tested them unscientifically over a few years. They're incredible, which I do not say lightly. Worth every penny.

    For anyone wondering, this clip shows nothing. A spark plug tester is just to see if they work. They reveal nothing about performance without a high speed camera to verify they keep up with firing intervals and targeted voltage limits.
    But in terms of comparison, copper spark plugs are effectively not used anymore. The standard is now Iridium plugs. And the Ruthenium plugs are a tier above that due to higher durability and stronger spark which results in stronger combustion and cleaner burn. It's classified as a high combustion spark plug. Typically you will see negligible benefits from Ruthenium besides longer lifespan unless you have a Turbo/Supercharged engine with a tune.

      I agree with you. Only point I'd say is that if you have really worn spark plug, the difference especially at low RPM is visible to the naked eye.

      Only Iridium has more durability per the manufacturer. Ruthenium does not last as long as iridium.

      It's funny that you say that, I just bought 8 of the NGK Ruthenium plugs for my 2010 GMC 5.3. I had a misfire incident about a week ago. I nursed it the mile home, though the scan tool on it had about 1,200 misfires on cyl #3. I swapped plugs, no change. I swapped coils, no change. I swapped my 1.5yr old Taylor wires, misfire followed the wire. I put a new set of Delco professional wires in. Smoothed it right out. For giggles I decided to put the scan tool on it just to make sure everything was good. To my surprise, I started getting random misfires on random cylinders. Only 2 on each cylinder but no rhyme or reason to timing. I have been tearing my hair out trying to track it down. Then I remembered I swapped in new plugs a week or so before I had the cylinder 3 issue. I put my old, dirty Delco plugs in and did a 15mile drive of varieties of speeds and acceleration and breaking. Not a single misfire. Today I went for a 10 mile drive and had 2 misfires on 3, 2 & 7. My short term fuel trims were right at 0-2 on the pre-cat sensors and the long term was 3 & 5. The engine has no ticks or even much sound. It is smooth and rather quiet. The truck has had regular full synthetic oil changes every 3k miles or less. I don't drive it a ton, so an oil change each spring and fall suits me fine. The misfires also don't throw codes and can't be felt. Since the Delco plugs were pretty worn I decided to give these NGK's a try. The Delco 41-196 that replaced the 41-111 plugs are made by NGK so why not bump up a bit. If I still get bobbles, I will give the injectors a spa day in the ultrasound cleaner. 😂 Only real strange thing I saw tonight while watching the wave forms on the Pre-cat O2 sensors was bank two run flat for a cycle. The AC kicked on just before so the idle went up just a bit. Bank one spiked up a bit and bank 2 dropped and stayed down and flat for its turn to peak on the wave pulse pattern. It's like bank one with the compressor in front of it increased fuel as the load slightly increased, but bank two cut fuel and took a super quick break. But even then, the random misfires literally happen on any cylinder at completely random times. I even started to thing it was my scan tool since it was a cheap $300 unit from Amazon. I hooked up my laptop with my HP Tuner to get more pids up to watch. I used the HPTuners to disable DOD a long time ago as well as eliminate Flex fuel and adjusted the stoich to compensate for the 10% ethanol our pump gas. I don't get into all the performance tuning, I just aim for longevity through efficiency. I hope any one dealing with random misfires on random cylinders at random times speedy solutions because it's maddening. I've checked vacuum line, intake manifold, throttle body, map&maf sensors, O2 sensors. Went through the wiring harnesses looking for breaks or corrosion. Installed more grounds to ensure everything was overly grounded. Always wanted to do it and had a hell of an excuse to get it done. I even was testing all the brake equipment thinking maybe a tiny hole in the brake booster causing unmetered air. Holy crap, sorry to keep rambling, I am just so freaking invested. Poor kids and wife hardly see me, I work all day and then roll around my engine bay till there isn't enough light to see. I think I might break down and take it to a garage. I haven't had work done at a shop in over 25yrs. Guess it's time😂😂

    • @DIYAutoworksNG
      @DIYAutoworksNG  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @grominwithrob1339 but you know some misfires are normal? I wouldn't bother with what you're describing. I get one or 2 in a cylinder sometimes.

    • @DIYAutoworksNG
      @DIYAutoworksNG  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not true. At higher RPM, an engine has less tolerance for things being out of spec, and so the strength of a spark does matter. Now, this is not to suggest that ruthenium spark plugs are always better, a lot goes into choosing a spark plug for an engine.
