    Hey Simon, great tips, and I think the most valuable insight here is how late contact greatly increases the risk of injury.
    One thing I'd like to add that's helped me (as someone who has been frequently guilty of hitting the ball late on the forehand side) is doing what Federer did on most of the forehands you inserted in this video, and that's catching the racket with left hand at the end of the follow through. I have found that this more deliberate motion not only forces me to hit through and into the court past contact, but also to start my racket prep and swinging up to the ball far earlier as more time is needed to hit the forehand and be able to catch the racket on the left side. In the years I've been playing, I've seen many players who are guilty of rushing their forehands involving a lot of wrist on the stroke because they're very late to the ball and end up swinging down and over the ball and cut the racket head across their bodies far too quickly. This increases the strain on the wrist and results in a large number of balls hitting the middle of the net. Catching the follow through can help remedy this.

    Very good! I had the problem of hitting ball at wrong time, and analyzing my game I concluded it was because my mindset was not correct: I felt worried about the ball coming, that causing me to hit it too early or too late with my body stepping back. Since a few weeks I started forcing myself to go towards the ball, as much as i can, also if this ended up in mishitting it. Well, I'm very proud to have the confirmation from you, now, that I'm going in the right direction... also, my game has improved a lot since then!
    In conclusion: THE MINDSET is FUNDAMENTAL almost more than technique when playing Tennis, and I've learned to take care also of all this "extra-technical" aspects thanks to your unbelievable lessons. I'll never stop thanking you, guys, for the work you do.....keep going, so that I can keep playing better and better!

      I dont know why Im so late hitting the ball. Its terrible I prepare so freaking late. next time I play my buddy who always beats me Im just going to focus on EARLY PREPARATION

      3 hits in tennis. 1-Opponents hits the ball, 2-ball hits court, 3-you hit ball. Have racquet back and ready BEFORE hit 2. Keep counting 1...2...3. This will stop you being late.

    Sometimes when I've prepared early, and done everything right, I take my eye off the ball at the last second, and miss the ball completely, but that's when I yell Yours! to my doubles partner. He's never hit a ball back yet. Think I need a new doubles partner.

    Great video, I do feel like I am rushed and not getting full extension (ball is too close to me) on my forehand. I've tried a few things like using my left arm to create spacing but I will also try these tips so that I can prepare sooner and hopefully get a more powerful shot. Thanks!

    It seems at the club during the group drills & watching others, most people are hitting late. It seems like there minds are in a defensive mode. Leaning on the ropes like a boxer who hopes there will less impact from the blows. I too can get like this during competition. For me it comes down to staying relaxed & positive. Going forward & meeting the ball on the rise makes for an - easy result. Thanks for this vid.

    This is a good tip. I had severe tennis elbow due to hitting the ball way too close to my body. As soon as I started hitting it a little farther out and earlier, the pain went away.

    Steps 4 and 5 are especially crucial. When I implemented it, I played great tennis. When I didn't, I definitely saw a drop in form

    Very good. I have a solid backhand, but inconsistent forehand. Two handed backhand gets me sideways, like you said
    I need to consistently turn my body, using two hands through the back swing, in my forehand and then boom! A great shot. Thanks for the tips, entertaining also. 🎾

    I struggle the most with competition. When I'm hitting/warming up I can play loosely and rip every ball and have it land in most of the time but as soon as we start counting points I tighten up and either start hitting weak balls or missing. Especially on fh

      Same here, but I figured out (duh) that the reason. When you start playing, you're having to run to the ball in various positions on the court. That's a lot different from hitting predictably returned balls to you in the warmup! One possible solution is to have your opponent or partner run you in practice. Hitting down the middle of the court to each other turns out to be pretty useless in terms of improvement.

      I struggle with this too. The difference is that in the match situation you have the fear of the ball going out, which is not there in the warm up. Even though you don't want to hit the ball out, you have to not fear it going out.. In a match, you are more likely to focus on the balls that do land out, but you have to dismiss this and focus on the next point. You will naturally be more tight during a match, so it's best to focus on getting good height on the ball and hitting through your shots. Balls landing deep or just out but close to the line are better than hitting shots into the net or even just way too short.

      Now I can hit with body rotation and weights I am curious how to create depth and angle. How can I hit deep ball effortlessly, how can I hit aggressive shots using body and arms. How do I create angle?
      How can I hit aggressive shots on the run?
      I also like to know the good warm up tip before the match..I know I have to be loose but it's difficult sometimes.

    Great video, all great advice but another thing that always helps me in not hitting the ball late is: stop thinking, just hit.
    I think everyone knows that when you put so much focus in trying to hit the ball, everything screws up at the moment of contact. Often times, keeping it simple and just letting your mind ease up will also drastically improve your timing. Tell yourself you want to hit the ball early, then stop worrying about all the mechanics.
    Stop thinking, just hit it!

    I noticed sometimes when i started a forehand flat hit onto tennis practice wall, i tend to pause for awhile before returning the motion back to the left side for the next hit.

      That pause might be good for tracking the ball but try to keep the body moving with your feet even when tracking the ball with the eyes.

    This is my struggle too, playing with combination of beginners and intermediate players, most time goes in analyzing where the shot will fall, how to handle the spin and bouncing high balls, then, may be late and carefully placing fails me from hitting harder and sending it to the baseline.
    Is coiling the body mandatory for all type of shots?
    Also taking the racket back, how much of it should bend the wrist back? Watching the Federer’s video, how does it all the time, but you does it without that, as a quick reverse ‘C’.

      Coiling helps you in two main ways:
      1. Storing energy in the trunk which will help you get power
      2. Racket preparation, by coiling, you eliminate the need for big swings.
      The swing you use will determine how much wrist you use in the shot, all covered in many of our lessons on the channel

    Good video! I've noticed that I usually prepare early but my problem is that I wait for the ball to drop too much and then I hit. I am set, the ball bounces and I'm glued to the baseline and wait for the ball to come to me. Any drill to fix this and hit the ball at its highest (waist high) instead knee high? Thanks!

    simon...consistency on second serve at pro level is something everyone needs to have for a solid game any tips for that ?

      One thing that's helped me, is whenever you're practicing your serve, only do second serves.
      another thing for consistency is get your toss as consistent as possible, then your motion. Next store that energy down in the back hip, if you're right handed - right hip, if you're left handed - left hip. Then think as if you're trying to hit up on the ball, this way you're adding top spin. More topsin = higher trajectory = more consistent serve.

    It’s tough for me to hit balls really hard, I once was cracking balls and I’ve never been able to again. Please help. I caught it in front, oh wait in front was my whole body not just my arm by my side right? do you have any more little tips for power ?

      Anything that wil increase your racket head speed will help you gain more power. Power comes from a faster racket head travelling through the contact zone.
      Use the bigger muscle groups to help you generate that effortless racket head speed.
      The legs and trunk will be the greatest source of power on most strokes.

    Simon, how do you time the contact point if it is a heavy top spin after the bounce it is really pushing towards you compared to a flat ball, do I stand a little further back ?

      You can stand back but also make sure you prepare early, be ready to simply swing out to the ball by the time it has bounced

    Simon great video thanks! Q for you: I have more off center hits after couple long rally points, I m gasping for breath, I lose control of the following shots and the game. What do you recommend I do

      That would come down to either your fitness levels or you are holding your breath during the longer points. Focus on exhaling during the contact zone and inhaling when the opponent hits, plus doing some HIIT training would help you out big time. Intervals like 30 second sprint followed by 30 seconds rest is the best way to improve on court performance for tennis

    Step #1: Reading the ball. Watching the ball come off your opponent strings
    Step #2: Early Preparation. Turn my body sideways on to the net
    Step #3: Racket Preparation. Getting the racket back in a position so that all you have to think about is coming forward
    Step #4: Tracking the bounce. Seeing the ball bouncing and rising up.
    Step #5: Contact Point. Seeing that contact point on your shot.

    Another reason for hitting late is if your racket is not in front of you enough as you are waiting for your opponent to hit the ball. If your racket is lagging a bit sideways due To biomechanics it will be near impossible to hit front.

    A very good and informative video, but you seem to have forgotten one very important aspect: hearing the sound that the ball makes coming off of your opponent's string bed. That's right up there with "seeing it." Try watching a video of the top pros playing a match - both with and without sound. The difference is huge!

    Hey Simon i have a question, the angle of my racket on the contact point ( forehand and backhand) is full 90 degrees or like this "/" ? i use a eastern forehand

      I am not Simon by any stretch of the imagination, but I have seen a good deal of super slow motion footage of various ATP pros which shows that at contact the racket is generally closed (like a /) from 8 to 11 degrees, depending somewhat on the kind of shot. That includes Federer, who plays FH with a mostly Eastern Forehand grip.

    I strugle the most when i be up on the game 40:00 or 40:15 or 40:30, i can't finish the game i always lose it which put a great pressure on me and give the opponent confidence

      @Yousef - What you describe is because you think about the outcome, not the next point. If the score is 40-love and you lose the next point, you will start to think about "what of I lose the next point." So, when you're preparing to serve, forget about the last point, don't think about the score, only think about what serve to hit and where to place it. If you're the returner, only think about putting the return in play.

    Just explain me how to counter topspin lobs landing near the base line.....My height is less (5'8). I feel difficult and most of the player play the topspin lob to my backhand. I use Two handed Backhand. Please That is the only weakness I have.

    Clear and constructive instruction. Why does Federer look at the contact 5:32 but Djokovic not? Nor did Agassi for that matter. Therefor, why do you say this is what to do when the pros don't? Actually, the head and eyes should be still during the contact phase but not necessarily with the eyes looking in the direction of the contact point. Otherwise good work.
