Thank you for talking about this. Rudy was my first 'fave player' on survivor and I loved watching your friendship. It's lovely seeing how kindly you speak of him to this day. 💙

These are all fascinating, thanks for doing them Richard... a season 1 rewatch commentary would be amazing, but maybe not until 40 is over, especially if we have a long wait for 41!
Honestly Richard I would be here for you going through every season in retrospect the way you're doing this one. Yours and others. Loving this channel.
I thought you made the move knowing you couldn't beat Rudy, and didn't want to betray him directly? This way you stay loyal to Rudy, and even if he does win the challenge, you still have a chance at the final tribal
If you had executive power over the show, what be the first thing/s you would do? Another way I guess I could word the question is if you took Jeff's place
@@mikejohnson001995 Absolutely, they stopped doing it last season and for this season they made a new "theme song" with the stupid "Are you ready, it's coming for you"

Talking about Greg lol I remember when he got voted out he was acting like he was crying saying I don't want to go and Rudy said he believed him for a minute there
The first survivor is still the best in my humble opinion. The cast was the most original and Rich was the mastermind the whole season. Still get a good laugh at walking around butt naked and Rudy's comment that I will not repeat on here.
I loved the first season my favorite season by far loved that cast I loved hatch too I thought that was hilarious that he played naked I still think its pretty funny today I don't think they would allow anyone to be naked today though
People have to remember that Rudy really wasn’t liked outside of his alliance. I, like all of America, loved Rudy and wished he had won, but the Pagong tribe thought he was grumpy. I agree with you Rich, that you still would’ve won.
I can honestly say that back in 2000 I quite liked you and saw nothing at all objectionable to the way you were playing. You were in fact my second choice. But Rudy was my first. When Kelly ousted him my brother and I both actually groaned out loud.
i think the snake and rats were high drama and part of survivor as long as it is with in time limit and at a time when she could say ANYTHING she wanted. I do like the tid bits of game controversy. Does survivor fall in the game show category like the game shows from the 50s when there was a scandal where winners were pre selected or helped and legislation and laws were made... rudy was clueless in challenge where you all went to stations and had to answer a question or id something.
Letting go of the pole has to be the boldest move ever.20 years ago I would have said Rudy would won Now not so much.I would love to hear your opinions about Russel
I don't think he's a Russel fan in other videos he's talked bad about him I wrote a comment in that video and told him he could be mad at me if he wanted but the Russell you see on survivor is not who Russell is as a person in life and reminded him of what he said at the season 8 reunion show about the Rob and Lex deal he said it's just a game jerri made a comment and they booed he so bad she got up and left the reunion show
How mad were you during the "Snakes and Rats" speech, seeing that it flipped a couple of votes against you? Edit: Maybe I should wait until the end of the video to comment.
Matt Kariger it flipped Gervase too I think. He was talking about how he can’t stand what Sue just did and wants her to shove it in her face after she wins.
I know hatch said in an interview when sue was making that speech that he was thinking sue shut up you’re going to make me lose votes it really should have been a 6-1 vote Colleen & gervase we’re going to vote for hatch but voted for Kelly because they felt bad for Kelly being on the receiving end of that speech gervase was really pissed at sue after that speech you could tell still as harsh as that speech was it still set the tone for how survivor is played for the next 20 years
It was lucky that you were chosen to be on that first season because you set the tone. Without you I suspect the game wouldn’t have been as Machiavellian, therefore not as fascinating, and may well have never gone beyond a second season. I would have definitely voted for you over Rudy because I would always vote for the best player over the ‘best human’.
I know I am years late to the game but I just discovered your youtube channel today. You made a comment about giving a commentary on each of the episodes of the first season of Survivor. I think it would be really cool to hear your thoughts and perspective on them.
He was definitely much more likeable than twila I think Chris wins either way at the end I hate Vanuatu though probably my least favorite season couldn't wait for it to be over
I mean, let's be real, he had already won. Chad and Sarge were always voting for him. Eliza was never voting for Twila. Twila screwed over LeAnn, Julie and Ami who actually liked Chris. Pretty sure Ami voted for Twila because she was a woman. Also, Chris didn't really apologize for the moves, just how he handled them. He could have told Eliza and Julie he was voting them out instead of blindsiding them.
I love hearing your thoughts on season 1 and later! I remember in Second Chance, though we barely saw Kelly, she copied Greg's "pick a number" jury question but like Greg with you, stated afterward that she would have voted Jeremy no matter what. Are there any other players from season 1 you think would be fun to bring back after all these years? I always think of Ramona and Gretchen and think they would have been great to bring back over the years. Wish you were back for WaW but don't we all!
Interesting hypothetical situation. It's near indisputable that you played a more strategic game than Rudy, but we might be able to work out if you win against Rudy based on jury comments at the final tribal council. Gervase - Actually voted for Kelly as he felt sorry for her following Sue's speech. He tends to make decisions based on his heart, and I think it's more likely he votes for Rudy over you, as I believe he likes Rudy more. But this one could go either way. Kelly - Completely unknown. Jenna - Actually voted for Kelly based on "strategy", and partially due to Sue's speech, and also that she thinks Kelly is a "great person". I think she votes based on who she likes more, and I believe that would be Rich. But like Gervase, this could go either way. Sean - Actually voted Rich but he didn't "think either of you truly deserve it", alluding to the fact that he didn't want people to make alliances and be deceptive. Safe to assume he votes for Rudy who was less strategic, and therefore less controversial, during the game. Coleen - Actually voted for Kelly, despite intending to originally vote for Rich. Changed her mind because Kelly said "will" was required, and also because "Rich doesn't need it". The latter reason is still in play vs Rudy, so I believe she votes for Rudy. Sue - Actually voted for Rich based on his "strong work ethic". I believe this is still the case against Rudy. Greg - Actually voted for Richard based on the pick a number scenario. Rich, you said this just for the purposes of the cameras. Even if we assume it's not though, the outcome is the same. You picked 7, and in a post-Survivor interview Greg said the correct answer was 9. It's unlikely that Rudy would have gotten closer so you still get the vote. That's Rudy 3 (Gervase, Sean, Coleen) and Rich 3 (Jenna, Sue, Greg). Looks like Kelly has the deciding vote! Either way, it remains close.
I recently rewatched season one and I think you win 5-2. I think Kelly votes for you (negating Rudy's vote since he's not on the jury), and Jenna flips since Sue does not make her speech. Reading body language, everyone else seems to have already made their decision prior to the final TC.
Hey, I enjoyed listening to your reasoning and thinking behind the final tribal council of that first season. Might I ask, who from you reason do you think could have beaten you at final tribal council, only counting say the last 8 or so contestants in the game.
I think what he means is, you don't win by apologizing for moves you made. Tyson was apologizing for his trash talk. We see other winners apologize for things that were unnecessary and not really gameplay. Example being Chris blindsiding Julie and Eliza. There was no real reason to do it other than him being pissed at them for blindsiding him earlier in the game. Jenna apologized for implying she had a handicap to Christy, again wasn't strategy. It's when people like Kelly, who apologized for being in the alliance, or Amanda for voting people out, that the jury loses respect for them. You gotta own your game to win.
It's really hard to say about the "What ifs". You're certainly a lot more articulate now than you were then, and make a compelling case. It seems to come down to the affection for Rudy vs the respect for your game play. It's true that you took him as far as he could go, but you also did all the dirty work. As you like to say, the players of that time were not able to fully separate the ethics of the real world and the game of Survivor. It's hard to say if it would have come out the same.

Going back to alternative timelines can be fun. Although Rich was there, watching at age 10, Sue's speech was 10% negative Rich, and 90% negative Wiglesworth. Sue was 'salty' Wiglesworth kept winning immunity, and Sue forgot about the game. I thought at 10 (from listening to my parents), those votes were based on who liked Rich, and not their indepth gameplay analysis. Imo, Rich won because of relationships. The final challenge decision by Rich was more of a Spock-like best logical choice disguised as brilliance. In every scenario, Wiglesworth would win that final challenge, but if the million dollar choice was between Rich and Rudy, the final would be 4-3...for *Richard Hatch.*
Rich, for starters I love the videos. Sadly you sound like russell hantz in this one. Saying you would have beaten Rudy because Rudy wasnt playing the game, and you drug rudy along and he would have been voted out of not for you... you go on to say rudy was just trying to survivor with all us youngins.... when everyone loved rudy you were banking on them to respect your gameplay over Rudy's social game.... sounds like russell talking about natalie white. On the flip side I think it makes the move at the end of removing yourself from the final challenge even better knowing you cant win and take rudy or you would lose, you cant take Kelly or you lose jury votes for turning on rudy. You know rudy would take you and kelly would as well, and that kelly would more than most likely win the challenge anyways... brilliant move, brilliant.... but don't play Russell's game. Am I wrong ?
Russell should've deffinly won season 19 I mean look at all the great things he done in that season he was the first person to ever find the idol without a clue Natalie did nothing but ride Russell coat tail
wow a big what if question for sure you definitley played a much better game rudy may have been more honorable & respected for sure however i believe you played the game much better i think you would have to really explain yourself & give your reasons as to why you should win kelly would have had zero chance against rudy it would be a unanimous 7-0 vote for rudy wow i still think you should have won against rudy however i think rudy would likely win against you just for being more respected & up front & honest would have been really interesting to see that play out though
*@Rich Hatch-While I do enjoy your videos, I feel the need to correct you on one glaring point-You repeatedly refer to fellow Survivor alum, Rudy Boesch, using he present tense-here and now. Guess someone sadly needs to remind you that the incredible Navy SEAL veteran, Mr Boesch passed away last year, on November 1, 2019, aged 91 yrs, 10 mos. RIP Rudy-WE still remember!!*
You played a hell of a game and you should feel that you would have won against Rudy. Would you of though? Shrug 🤷♂️ Really, there’s no way to know, too many unknown variables. It would be like trying to figure out the hypotenuse of a right angle if every side was unknown, couldn’t do it, couldn’t know.
I think survivor needs to get rid of pondarossa they jury needs to be sequestered put off by their self not discussing who their voting for until final tribal
Rich, I am appreciating your insights in these videos, good stuff! But no, Rudy would have won handily against you in the final 2, in my humble opinion. This is why your move of letting go of the totem in the final immunity challenge was a bad one. It was a huge gamble. You were gambling Kelly would win the challenge which could be no better than a 50/50 shot, because if Rudy wins that challenge he wins the game whether he takes you or Kelly to the end, having just added another impressive bit to his resume with a win in a grueling, iconic final challenge. This where you got truly lucky and a poor strategic gamble paid off for you. The gamble, however, was completely unnecessary and could only hurt your chances of winning the game versus competing to win the challenge. By staying in, you have as good a chance as any to win (1/3), in which case you control the final two, ensuring you can take Kelly with no risk of coming in 3rd, while solidifying your resume with an impressive win in the final challenge. If you lose the challenge naturally, the same scenario can still play out as stepping down. You should have recognized that your priority in the final challenge has to be ensuring Rudy doesn't win, and do to that you must compete - alongside Kelly - to do so. I also want to point out that letting Kelly be the 'bad guy' for voting out Rudy seems to contradict your style of play where you take both responsibility (and credit) for your choices. I don't knock your win, every winner needs an element of luck. But I can't view stepping down from the final immunity challenge as anything other than a mistake that could have cost you everything. Wildly entertaining though.
I think Greg deciding to have contestants pick a number between 1-10 could have been one of two things: 1) Greg could have viewed the entire experience as being more of a documentary-style “how would society form given these circumstances” and he didn't like the gaming aspect of the show. This could have been a way for him to get back at production, essentially saying: “Screw strategy” and “You're not getting a dramatic, emotional reaction out of me.” 2) It could have also been a strategic way to ensure that whoever he picked couldn't be mad at him because they were ultimately the ones who choose the number. It's entirely possible Greg had every intention of voting for Rich and just used the number picking moment as a post-game blame shield for himself. We will never know next because the number Greg picked (if any) prior to their answers was not recorded.
@@reubenmanzo2054 But that's after the fact. If he wanted Hatch to win he could have just asked “Which number do you pick” then when asked which number he chose he could just pick a number that's closest to the contestant he was planning to vote for anyways.
I like Hatch’s videos but he can’t always continue to act like he will be victorious and this great player in modern survivor with no credibility. Yes he won the original season, but there was legit no gameplay to go off of, and the winner was purely based off of like ability. Then when he returned fo this most recent time... season 8, he was eliminated at the very beginning against all star players. Making hour long videos to analyze is nice, however sitting on the couch and watching to critique is much easier than sitting on the island with tour fate in may other’s hands.
Rudy’s opening statement would have been epic! Probably just one sentence - “I hope I never see any of you again”
forcing Kelley to win the challenge to even make it to the Final 2 and doing the dirty work in voting out Rudy - winning by losing - Hatch is the OG
Rest In Peace Rudy. He lived a life that anyone would be proud of.

I think Rudy would've won
Daniel Mills If he deserved to win he would have won
wow a big what if question for sure you definitley played a much better game rudy may have been more honorable & respected for sure however i believe you played the game much better i think you would have to really explain yourself & give your reasons as to why you should win kelly would have had zero chance against rudy it would be a unanimous 7-0 vote for rudy wow i still think you should have won against rudy however i think rudy would likely win against you just for being more respected & up front & honest would have been really interesting to see that play out though
Rudy would have won
*@Rich Hatch-While I do enjoy your videos, I feel the need to correct you on one glaring point-You repeatedly refer to fellow Survivor alum, Rudy Boesch, using he present tense-here and now. Guess someone sadly needs to remind you that the incredible Navy SEAL veteran, Mr Boesch passed away last year, on November 1, 2019, aged 91 yrs, 10 mos. RIP Rudy-WE still remember!!*
Well said
@@danielmills9600 : ) Thanks...
No one needs to remind him. He’s mentioned repeatedly about Rudy’s passing in other videos.
Linda De Graaf Shut up pretentious dickhead. They were great friends and he doesn’t need a reminder
It's a social game.
Not a chance, Hatch. Haha.
less sophisticated. ha!
i have to speed up the video cuz god he speaks so slowly
Wasn't it confirmed at the reunion, though "had Kelly said 9, she would be $900K richer."?
I think Greg deciding to have contestants pick a number between 1-10 could have been one of two things:
1) Greg could have viewed the entire experience as being more of a documentary-style “how would society form given these circumstances” and he didn't like the gaming aspect of the show. This could have been a way for him to get back at production, essentially saying: “Screw strategy” and “You're not getting a dramatic, emotional reaction out of me.”
2) It could have also been a strategic way to ensure that whoever he picked couldn't be mad at him because they were ultimately the ones who choose the number. It's entirely possible Greg had every intention of voting for Rich and just used the number picking moment as a post-game blame shield for himself. We will never know next because the number Greg picked (if any) prior to their answers was not recorded.
@@OutwitOutplayOutlast There's just one small problem with (2): Greg said at the reunion "my number was 9".
@@reubenmanzo2054 But that's after the fact. If he wanted Hatch to win he could have just asked “Which number do you pick” then when asked which number he chose he could just pick a number that's closest to the contestant he was planning to vote for anyways.
No Greg was voting for hatch anyway the pick a number thing was just a joke
Kelly Wiglesworth is my favorite of ALL time!
