I agree that this was maybe the greatest season ever for Survivor. So many great moves and solid play. Been watching every season since yours with my wife and haven't been this excited about a season in a very very long time. Rachel may have been the best player ever but that is really hard to say. One of the moves that is maybe underestimated is when she played her "shot in the dark" to gauge the other players reaction in order to know if she needed to play her hidden immunity idol. No one has ever done that before and I believe it will be something done again by some smart player that studies the game. Loved the season and glad you are back.

I found myself saying - Wow, I'm really into Survivor this season. My 88 year old Grandma is my Survivor buddy. She's in a different state but We would have a weekly home critic/discussion. I agree on Mental breakdowns. I'm sure there is some PTSD floating around. I liked Rachel from the beginning (which is rare for my favorites to win) She just has this face that drew me in. I also liked Teeny. Yes Sad, but fascinating. I appreciate Genevieves game. A bit Savage. I didn't like how Sue revealed at the end, her true age. ( Really, was is that shocking)
Thank You Sincerely for coming back. You have such massive inside knowledge, great persona, and humor.

One moment that will be remembered imo above anything else from this season was just a small thing from a non winner. When Kyle at the auction ate the chicken wings I heard from people all over social media talking about it and not even survivor fans. Like people who have never watched an episode or haven’t watched since the 2000s talked about it online. It’s the first time since Tony’s llama impression on Cagayan that became a huge deal or even farther back Russel hantz and the Katrina controversy. It’s what survivor needed. Real people and a genuine dilemma.

This is such a contrast to your reaction to All Stars S8 that I’ve just watched… and I’m much more here for this than for that, and would be interested in longer and more detailed videos as we go through a season like this!
Despite being very much old enough to have watched in real time from the start, I’m in the UK and the first episodes I ever watched were from S47 week by week. But I very quickly realised the game was great, and since it started airing I’ve also watched all of S33 (Millennials vs Gen X), and S1-8 (not quite in that order), and it’s safe to say I’m well and truly hooked! Trying to strike the right balance of being all-in and wanting to find out details about players and episodes (and read back what was said in confessionals via the Survivor Wiki, etc) and absorbing a whole bunch of other podcasts/videos/interviews, while somehow trying to avoid all-out spoilers! It’s not a *great* success so far, especially because I keep recognising names of various players and winners that come up in discussion time and again, so I’m definitely going to remember them when I watch their seasons! 😅
I feel like I’m about ready to start up with S9… 10 down, a glorious 36 to go! I *loved* S47 though and SO MANY of its cast, who were so brilliant in so many ways… part of me wonders if the first season you watch (and its players) end up having a special place in your heart, no matter how many more you watch. I do have a fondness for S33 as the first *full* season I watched, but 47 is going to take some beating for me! (I imagine if this phenomenon is real, the fact you were on S1 means you’re a shoe-in for a lot of people’s favourites! So it’s only fair for people like me to come along 24 years later with a totally different first season to hold that award 😊)

Just to get a understanding of my viewpoint.. watching my 1st video on this channel... only heard of Richard Hatch after watching HOV this past season. This season of Survivor is my 1st season ever watching it. Have watched BB since about 2020 , and The Challenge since about 2021.
Was about 4:37 into the video and had to respond to that comment.
I feel , while morally it's not okay, it's often done. Especially on reality and competition shows as such. The Challenge is a show that comes to mind when I think about that statement. Especially the earlier seasons. Plenty of ppl have came back years later and explained that when on the show they were mentally not in a good headspace or was dealing with things during that time frame. One in particular that comes to mind is on The Challenge : the island if I'm not mistaken, I remember seeing something about a guy with alcoholism. Literally every confessional ppl were saying he has a alcohol problem ... he even said after something had went down. He had a problem and wanted to do better. And then the next night, you saw him again , got upset and started drinking and then the drama. And it upset me because, I initially thought, where is production ? Why are they allowing this to happen and openly filming it as if this is entertaining. Like this also can be triggering for some viewers who may have had to deal with someone like this in their life? I was very disappointed. But I think production is so nowadays focused on the drama and entertainment side of TV that they forget that they are working with real people and affecting real peoples lives. Almost like The Truman show . All of those people was so into watching this man live this life, but idk If they realized that they were mentally destroying him in the process. I don't think they're as bad as The Hunger Games , but still neglect. As long as drama and mess will be praised and rewarded over , honestly and truth you will continue to run into that problem.

Just finished up a rewatch of Borneo and i always find it interesting how you basically lay out how to play and win Survivor during Colleen’s question of what traits got you to the end. Introspection, observation and maintaining/dancing on the line of ethical play. Things production and Jeff werent even thinking about but essentially outwit outlast outplay that they became so attached to. Really surprising how you were able to nail down the game, especially when Kelly’s answer (no knock against her) was about having faith in herself to make it, viewing the game as more making it to the end and surviving, instead of outplaying the other castaways on your way to the end. Bc season 1 everyone was thinking you have to be the most likable outdoorsman mcguiver to be a deserving winner. Anyway thats my rant

Hey Richard - Always great hearing you talking about survivor in specifics. I really wished you could say something bout the final tribal. I came into the final tribal thinking Rachel was going to win but then Sam had probably one of the best final tribals I've ever seen and I truly thought he managed to sway the juries in his direction. In hindsight I'm wondering whether the edit was done in a way to maximise the effect of Rachel winning. Rachel herself admitted that she thought Sam had a brilliant final tribal and that she might be in danger, but the votes told us a completely different story. I'd love to hear (or read) your thoughts!

Again, JUST as a longtime observer, so I'm not throwing stones here, because I've never done it, but I think you're right: Russell doesn't know how to play the game. While he can beat, say, Rob Mariano through backstabbing him, is he going to GET the Godfather's vote in the end? Hell no, because Russ tends to stab in such a way as makes it look like he's laughing at you. Nobody likes the schoolyard bully, no matter how tough he is. I respect Godfather a lot more.

I 100% agree with your Andy assessment. His breakdown concerned me on a level beyond the game. Before coming back a second time, I believe he needs to speak with a therapist about some deep-rooted issues he brought with him in the game.
Genevieve did great, but her one stumble was cutting off her emotions after the Kishan blindside. It cost her the opportunity to bond closer with people and it cost her Teeny’s trust after the Sol blindside.
Teeny had an excellent social game and did well in the Firemaking Challenge, but just fell short. Hopefully she can reach peace with her story about not defeating the “big handsome jock”.
Caroline didn’t impress me - she just seemed like an NPC compared to others. Her missed opportunity was voting out Tiyana over Gabe. That one vote could have made her a power player in the game.
Sierra also missed an opportunity to be a power player. Had she joined the Gata girls to vote off Andy, there would have been a re-vote and Andy would be gone 2-1. She would have been at the center of Gata keeping all her relationships in place - Sam by force, and Rachel and Anika by trust.
Sam was king of Gata and then stumbled after the Sierra blindside. He got to the end and did the best explaining his game, but Rachel had more control of her endgame than him.
Rachel played in the middle, then scrapped her way out of the bottom through advantages, idols, and Immunity wins that were played or won when she needed them the most. She deserved this win!
Other players I’d like to see with a second chance are Kishan, Anika, and Tiyana.

I didn't watch any of this season, I kind of just didn't even know it was going on. I think I might've found out about it when the season finale was happening
I watched the summit this year tho (and I believe it's on the same channel as survivor even - cbs), and it's format was pretty much the same show as survivor - I probably watched every episode of the summit minus maybe the first episode, and I think one other episode
in that show, Nick, Theron and Pumpkin won, you (Richard) could watch that if you want a survivor-esque show to watch
I haven't really watched much survivor recent seasons
but I remember in a recent season they had these advantages that could become immunity idols, but until all 3 tribes said the catchphrase on the advantage, until then the player lost their vote
and generally speaking, I don't even remember what year hidden immunity idols came into play, but I think they were a good addition. (was it the 3rd season when they came into play? if season 3 was africa? either way I think I'm referring to the only season in Africa. for some reason I remember this doctor or scientist guy (skinny tall guy with glasses) that I think made a fake hidden immunity idol))

Hi Rich!! It's great that you're back, because I actually wondered why your videos stopped appearing. I agree that it was an excellent season, probably the best in the new era. However, I am worried about something else, namely the way it is implemented. I live in Poland, here Survivor is not that popular, but me and my friend have been watching and exchanging opinions for years. Over the course of the season, we figured out that Rachell would win based on how often and how her confessions were shown. This problem has been going on for a number of years, for example Natalie in Winners at War. Also the developers did a lot to spoil our fun and in a way you could guess that she would be the one to return to the game to the last six. There is a problem here, the players are good, but the implementation has been dramatic for some time. Australia does it better, in our opinion. Would you agree with us?

My thoughts on your Andy take….Probably not the first, probably not the last time he’ll have an “attack”. It’s great Survivor is giving exposure to mental health and maybe educating people that it’s ok to not be ok sometimes. iAnxiety is a dirty sob or so I’ve heard. As long as a player has coping skills, not a harm to themselves or others, then they have every right to be there. I worried for Andy when it first happened, but when I saw how quickly he worked through it, I was never worried about his health again.

Richard, I have great respect for you and your game, but I think what you sometimes fail to understand is that Survivor is BUILT on playing beyond the game. If every season had 18 players of people who "understand the game," as you put it, they would play without emotion, there would be no sense of betrayal, or heartbreak, or emotional blindside which makes the show so good. Part of what makes winning so hard is winning over the hearts and minds of those you have betrayed. If we humans were able to see these games as pure games as you wish then the show would be much less poignant.

You're certainly nicer about it than Russell Hantz. Do you know him at all? With the 26-day format, what I'm finding as a never-missed-an-episode audience member is that they're doing MORE in LESS time, which, frankly, doubles the stress. In terms of the plot, they had to work everything out to fit into the foreshortened format, which is why the first two or so seasons of this format felt like you were racing through the show--too fast-paced--but now they seem to have worked it out. I don't like the new (lack of) after-show, though: Survivor's just being cheap with that sh*t. The players deserve better than that. But Russell is al, "If you can't play 39 days, you're not a Survivor player." Do you agree with that?

      not Richard, but
I think it's kind of out of contestant's hands
if production says the show will be 26 days, then if a contestant preferred the original 39 day format, it's not like they get to call the shots

Okay I think Rachel’s bush hiding pales in comparison to Tony’s spying

Rachel got an idol at camp, high risk high reward, also solved a puzzle in the middle of the ocean for an advantage. She earned what she got for sure

@mindbodyfit111 gifted immunity from sal and gifted the clue to the idol, nothing she did earned her that! Idols need to be earned, not given.

@@chicagokong Both instances that could have been granted to anyone. One is luck of the draw, the other is being liked enough to be saved, makes Sol look like a game player as well. Either is not paving to her favor. There were two episodes that practically made it the all Rachel show because of how well she was playing. It's not old school rules anymore, idols and advantages are part of the game and she was involved in the majority of them.
Just say you didn't like her and be done with it...
