Don’t forget about the non power 5 schools. The amount of d1 basketball programs in North Carolina is insane. Big south, meac, CAA, Socon, a10 and even the sunbelt, cusa, and American have 1 or many member institutions from North Carolina. Every year March madness has multiple non power 5 representatives from nc

There was the Big Four Tournament in the 70s. Interestingly, Wake had the most titles despite having a losing record overall at 10-12. State and UNC had winning records while Duke had a losing record. There was another ore-season tournament in the 50s, the Dixie Classic, with the same four teams.

There's also many social/cultural differences between Duke and UNC as well. Duke is a majority out of state student population of extremely bright kids and are usually upper class so they can afford the high tuition. Whereas UNC is one of the most affordable flagship public universities in the country but also one of the hardest to get into. So both sets of students are about the same as far as pre-college academic achievement, but the UNC kid is a local kid who was probably the valedictorian of his public high school and his dad is a mechanic. The Duke kid is very intelligent and academically accomplished but went to a New England prep school and his dad works in finance. I also had friends who were upper class who went to UNC as well. So it's not black and white. But make no mistake, both sets of students who attend these school are extremely bright.

wake is the redheaded stepchild of the big 4. they had a couple seasons where they were the top team. in '95, they ran thru the ACCT beating eventual FF UNC in the ACC title game. they had Duncan and Childress which was the best inside out combo in NCAA ball. they had other FF calibur teams between the 90s and 00s (i.e. wake when Chris Paul was a So.).
i grew up in chapel hill and back in the 70s and 80s, the rivalry was UNC and state. you rarely saw people walking around with dook hats and Ts, mainly UNC and state. kay changed that and dook became a powerhouse by the late 80s and state dropped off the map. all of a sudden, i started seeing dook garb. but during kays reign, heels matched them in FFs, titles and head to head even though unc had to go thru 4 coaching changes and some rebuilding years. unc earlier won the state rivalry and then won the dook rivalry once and for all during kays last season.
    phuc dook and go Heels!

When someone says college basketball in NC you automatically think Duke and UNC but NC State was the first NC school to be a powerhouse. It all started with Everett Case who’s was the coach of the Wolfpack from 1946-1964. He brought basketball to North Carolina from Indiana and was the reason historic Reynolds Coliseum which at the time was the largest primarily basketball arena known in the south east. Duke was never in the picture till coach K. UNC and State were always the top dogs, Duke never won any championships until Coach K. NC State had its two national champs before Duke got one. UNC was good but when Dean Smith stepped on the court it took off. All teams have had great coach’s and history but today you only hear about Duke and UNC. From Everett Case to Jimmy V, to Dean Smith to Coach K. NC was always great for basketball.

Even with them being seconds apart and sharing the same road, i don't think this rivalry will ever be the same. One of these 2 teams is gunna become dominant over the other and win every matchup. Idk who is gunna come out on top and putting the nail into the rivalry and claim victorious, but one of them will. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the 2, if not both teams just became less than mediocre, unranked, and irrelevant. Coach Williams and Coach K had a very special talent in spotting talent!! Those 2 guys knew how to exactly recruit, who to recruit and how to fix the smalls flaws they might have on the court. Now that their gone, i don't see anyone else being able to spot special talent and recruit some of the best players in America. Coach Williams and Coach K just different and had a special eye in recruiting the best talented players out there.

The narrator makes two huge gaffes. One is his inability to correctly pronounce the word “Raleigh”. It is easy to pronounce if you pronounce the first half of the word like you would a college cheer. As in Rah Rah (insert team name next). The second half of the word is pronounced like the man’s name “Lee”. Put the two together and you have “Rah-Lee” or Raleigh.
His second brobdingnagian blunder occurs when he tries to pronounce the word “Carolinians”. The proper way to pronounce the word is like saying “Caro- lynn-e-uns”.
Practice a bit and he will master it in no time.
Btw, he also mispronounces the word “South”. I am guessing he has roots in Canada by the way he says the word. Properly spoken, the word sounds like “Sow (as in a female pig” added to “th” as in the last to letters in the word “tooth”. Easy, right?
Fun fact: in our 13 men’s college National Championships is the fact that North Carolina is the only state that has three universities with at least two championships each. North Carolina with 6, Duke with 5 and North Carolina State with 2.
The announcer also mispronounces the word “out”. Once again, he must have roots in Canada.

I'd argue that Browns and Ravens is a big rivalry. Louisville and Kentucky is a big one, too. But I'll rank Top 10.
    1. Duke vs. UNC
    2. Yankees Vs. Red Soxs
    3. Bulls vs. Pistons (90s)
    4. Alabama vs. Auburn
    5. Mets vs. Yankees
    6. Louisville vs. Kentucky
    7. Florida vs. FSU
    8. Ohio State vs. Michigan
    9. Texas vs. Oklahoma
    10. Packers vs. Vikings

Did this guy really compare Duke vs unc to Barcelona vs Real madrid? El classico alone gets 5x more viewers than the superbowl.. this rival goes back to the Spanish Civil War between the Spanish dictator vs anti fascist regimes in Barcelona the tried to erase the Catalonian language from barca. Duke unc doesn't even hold a fraction of the rivalry of El classico

The origins of the rivalry far precede the civil war being product of the historic Madrid Barcelona rivalry (similar to Boston new York). Both were the biggest teams in Spain (together with espanyol and bilbao) in the early 20th century

Yes greatly, and as a nc native it is a crucial part of North Carolina culture. I regularly had field trips to the acc tournament. We often fill out brackets in class when March comes around and will often watch the games in class. Duke students literally have to take a test on their knowledge of Duke basketball in order to just wait in line for the Duke unc game (for which they have to camp out side in tents for like 6 weeks if they pass the test). When my mom moved to nc she immediately got told to pick a team (she chose Duke because they performed the best academically). My parent’s first date was a Duke basketball game, so we do care greatly

Yes. When UNC and Duke played in the Final Four in 2022, it got 18.5 million viewers or 5.5% of the US population. That’s absolutely massive for any TV program except the NFL.
And since you aren’t American: the Final Four is the semifinal of the NCAA tournament, a 68-team single elimination tournament. It’s like if the FA Cup was played over 3 weeks and decided the league championship.

Damn this guy really compared DUKE UNC to el classico. The world cup will be in America in 2026. It was in my home country in 2010. It’s like nothing you’ll ever see. Tell me, Is DUKE UNC on the same level as Tom Brady, Pat Mahomes Super Bowl in 2021? So how could it be on the same level as Messi, Ronaldo on the same field.

@@nottheatf6357You obviously don’t know anything about the rivalry, but that’s ok. The schools count up wins each year in every sport they compete against in. SC consistently dominates the head to head matchups. People forget there’s more than football, even though it’s 1-1 over the last 2 and both won by the visitor. In fact, the SC women’s basketball just won their 15th straight against them, so pretty much everything huh statement doesn’t ring true.
The rivalry doesn’t get the exposure, but it’s definitely the most heated rivalry in college, and one of the oldest. When is the last time you heard of a death over any other rivalry? This, unfortunately, is usually something you hear about at least every other year.

Im glad this video annoyed you, it just speaks to how American culture does not need something extra and extravagant ( European football) to be entertained. It just goes to show how little Americans care about Soccer, so much so that we are willing to compare a rivalry in a single state to one of the biggest European events ever, i rest easy knowing I don’t have to watch soccer. It’s ironic that Europeans claim soccer to be the best thing ever but the fact that Americans simply don’t give a single fuck annoyed the hell outta them and believe me America would much rather watch American football and Basketball rather than grown men run around and cry and throw up when they fall down every 45 seconds in soccer. I think Americans are also grateful that when they go to games they are not at risk of being mugged/tear gassed/beaten by riot police just because they wore a different color than the home team.
Again rest easy knowing that Americans care so little about Futball that they would rather watch a bunch of teenagers throw a ball into a hoop for 40 min than watch 22 grown men millionaires run around for 90+ minutes
