Monkey Man could be construed a "remake" but really only of a genre. It looks legit. There are other movies out there as well. Angel Studios and many others that are making great movies. We just don't get easy access to the info. You have to dig for it now.

Yuk. All this bitter hating on the present while at the same time romanticizing the past. In the last 15 months alone we had a super diverse and entertaining list of movies like Avatar 2, Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things, Dune 2, Across the Spider-Verse, Elemental, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Killers of the Flower Moon, Anatomy of a Fall, Cocaine Bear, Wish, The Creator and No Hard Feelings. Many of the them are original stories. People just go to cinemas way less for orginal stuff. If "The Creator" would be the exact same movie but be called "Star Trek VI" it would have probably made twice as much. Movies are awesome. Just go check some out and you'll see times aren't as bad as you make them.

Movies nowadays rely mostly on effects rather than plot, while movies in the past had better plots to compensate for the lower computer effects quality.
That gets more and more true every day. If you want really good stories go back and watch the original Twilight Zone. Every episode is a classic and the stories were really well done. They had to be due to the effects not being great.
Its not that older films had to rely on the plot instead of special effects to make a good film, the story itself is what makes the film great, effects only help.
Yep, this is Hollywood's stupidity on show here. I imagine they made the tornadoes more intense in this movie, but effects are not going to get people to want to see it. The original was something special because of every aspect, but especially the characters. Based on what I saw in the trailers, they didn't top it, so I see no reason to watch it.

I watched that movie at least 3 times in the cinema as a little kid. Watching those water ripples in the cup when the T-Rex was closing in was pure genius. Its a real shame the franchise never really produced anything like the original. Not even close.
The 90s were arguably the most innovative era. At least in terms of unique stories. After that you pretty much have to look at certain directors, like Nolan and Tarantino, in order to find something inspiring. Yes, there are exceptions and some blockbusters are even worth the time. But a blockbuster post 2014? Not so much. That was a really good year, perhaps the best ever. And the decline has been steady ever since.

@@JKnksrsly I think that's the best one of that trilogy too. Even though I tear up from "... but I can carry you!". But to me there are too many great movies from the first half of the 2010s to call it part of the decline. I never had trouble with the shield-riding. Hanging upside down from a bat while slicing dozens of orc heads or defying gravity is a problem though. Legolas was already at the edge of being over the top, there was no need to push him over it. It actually just made him ridiculous, because you couldn't take him seriously anymore.

Samantha Weaving did a movie 3-4 years ago with the same plot line, but lower budget as she just has to survive the night in the home while her new relatives try to hunt her down verses this big budget monstrosity.

Twister I loved it as a kid but It was a bockbuster mainly because it special effects that at the time were a really new and shocking thing. Also it had a surprisingly good cast of actors who did a very decent job...But it had a almost non existent story. The new one has lost the novelty of the effects (its main asset) and the actors look... Nothing polite to say here 😂. But ey maybe the new script is solid gold.

Road House definitely. But I was shocked yesterday when my 23 yr old son told me about the new twister film. I told him it was a remake of the old film & he told me he hasn’t ever watched it. Not sure what house he has grown up in, but I’ve watched twister tons of times. Anyway, he is looking forward to seeing it & I’m re-evaluating my parenting.
I would disagree on Roadhouse: I thought it was a great movie at the time, but it missed out on it's full potential, Hopefully this one can remedy that.

In the 90s basically every year there were huge bangers that turned into classics. 1996 alone had Independence Day, Twister, Mission Impossible, The Rock, Space Jam, 12 Monkeys, Jumanji, Toy Story, Heat, and From Dusk Till Dawn. There's a ton of others from that year too. From Dusk Till Dawn was 78th on the box office list to give you an idea lol.

Kind of depressing to see the type of big budget films being made these days. I realise no one wants to be left holding the can if a movie doesn't attract an audience, but surely you don't minimize risk by just making new versions of existing IP forever, do you? If the answer to that question is 'yes', then we're in a for a heck of a lot of slightly modified sameness for a long time.

It's technically a sequel I think, since they're using Dorothy IX (Dorothy 1-3 were used in the original). But considering that over half the cast are either dead or dying, it makes sense that there isn't much turn over. However, the hilarity is, its actually still out of date, since some scientists/storm chasers actually pulled this off late last year/early this year (can't remember the exact time, I just know it was recent), where they sent a special drone up into a tornado to track everything the movies said it would track.
It's always fun to watch old stories being presented with new actors and new special effects. Some work, some don't. It's all creative stuff. Being 71yrs old now, most of the plots I've seen before but that's okay. I like movies❤ Oh yeah, and now I can watch them at home in my flannel PJs.😊
It almost seems like thanks to the covid days, the enthusiasm to make great movies that made you desire to watch them are gone, like the point of a really good story plot and thought, is just a "meh" that'll do mentality and pass it off as something we would want to watch. Yuk. All this bitter hating on the present while at the same time romanticizing the past. In the last 15 months alone we had a super diverse and entertaining list of movies like Avatar 2, Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things, Dune 2, Across the Spider-Verse, Elemental, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Killers of the Flower Moon, Anatomy of a Fall, Cocaine Bear, Wish, The Creator and No Hard Feelings. Many of the them are original stories. People just go to cinemas way less for orginal stuff. If "The Creator" would be the exact same movie but be called "Star Trek VI" it would have probably made twice as much. Movies are awesome. Just go check some out and you'll see times aren't as bad as you make them.

Movies nowadays rely mostly on effects rather than plot, while movies in the past had better plots to compensate for the lower computer effects quality.
That gets more and more true every day. If you want really good stories go back and watch the original Twilight Zone. Every episode is a classic and the stories were really well done. They had to be due to the effects not being great.
Its not that older films had to rely on the plot instead of special effects to make a good film, the story itself is what makes the film great, effects only help.

Yep, this is Hollywood's stupidity on show here. I imagine they made the tornadoes more intense in this movie, but effects are not going to get people to want to see it. The original was something special because of every aspect, but especially the characters. Based on what I saw in the trailers, they didn't top it, so I see no reason to watch it.
The original was an instant classic with a superb cast! But it may still be good.

I watched that movie at least 3 times in the cinema as a little kid. Watching those water ripples in the cup when the T-Rex was closing in was pure genius. Its a real shame the franchise never really produced anything like the original. Not even close.
The 90s were arguably the most innovative era. At least in terms of unique stories. After that you pretty much have to look at certain directors, like Nolan and Tarantino, in order to find something inspiring. Yes, there are exceptions and some blockbusters are even worth the time. But a blockbuster post 2014? Not so much. That was a really good year, perhaps the best ever. And the decline has been steady ever since.

@@JKnksrsly I think that's the best one of that trilogy too. Even though I tear up from "... but I can carry you!". But to me there are too many great movies from the first half of the 2010s to call it part of the decline.
I never had trouble with the shield-riding. Hanging upside down from a bat while slicing dozens of orc heads or defying gravity is a problem though. Legolas was already at the edge of being over the top, there was no need to push him over it. It actually just made him ridiculous, because you couldn't take him seriously anymore.

Twister I loved it as a kid but It was a bockbuster mainly because it special effects that at the time were a really new and shocking thing. Also it had a surprisingly good cast of actors who did a very decent job...But it had a almost non existent story.
The new one has lost the novelty of the effects (its main asset) and the actors look... Nothing polite to say here 😂.

Armies of trained soldiers can’t make it out alive when dealing with the dragon, but this girl not only gets away, she goes back and defeats the enemy all by herself. So tired of the strong independent woman that is in no way realistic.
Hollywood is so creatively bankrupt. There are a TON of great sci-fi novels that could be made into movies, but Hollywood is so terrified of not using existing IP that almost everything is recycled trash. The only one I have any interest in is Deadpool.

Road House definitely. But I was shocked yesterday when my 23 yr old son told me about the new twister film. I told him it was a remake of the old film & he told me he hasn’t ever watched it. Not sure what house he has grown up in, but I’ve watched twister tons of times. Anyway, he is looking forward to seeing it & I’m re-evaluating my parenting.

In the 90s basically every year there were huge bangers that turned into classics. 1996 alone had Independence Day, Twister, Mission Impossible, The Rock, Space Jam, 12 Monkeys, Jumanji, Toy Story, Heat, and From Dusk Till Dawn. There's a ton of others from that year too. From Dusk Till Dawn was 78th on the box office list to give you an idea lol.

[The following is my opinion. I am old enough to have seen the 1960s originals of which the first remakes/ sequels/ prequels (albeit I would find Quiet Place interesting - but would not watch it due to cat concerns like the other commenters from above :-) ) were made in the 1980/ 90s - thank you, Hollywood, for driving home this fact.
Maybe movie theaters can save their venues in the future with triple feature events where the originals and remakes are shown in sequence. Granted, for this a very masochistic audience has to be willing to attend the shows, so my wild idea is already done and dusted.
I for one am thankful for the exposition in the trailers - given the current ticket prices it would be a shame to realise that you made an expensive mistake only when the lights go out and the commercials begin to roll. Again, this is only my opinion.

Kind of depressing to see the type of big budget films being made these days. I realise no one wants to be left holding the can if a movie doesn't attract an audience, but surely you don't minimize risk by just making new versions of existing IP forever, do you? If the answer to that question is 'yes', then we're in a for a heck of a lot of slightly modified sameness for a long time.
Unfortunately, the answer is mostly "yes." But...at least with the recent beginnings of 'burnout' with the superhero genre, maybe we'll see different IP? I don't know. I don't think Hollywood will give up so easily on something which has made them billions.

Im not one for remakes of older movies or any tv shows. But am curious about the movie industries approach if they were to make a new "Airwolf" "Blue Thunder" "Smokey & the Bandit" or perhaps "Krull". Im sure any 80s kid knows what that one is.

It's technically a sequel I think, since they're using Dorothy IX (Dorothy 1-3 were used in the original). But considering that over half the cast are either dead or dying, it makes sense that there isn't much turn over. However, the hilarity is, its actually still out of date, since some scientists/storm chasers actually pulled this off late last year/early this year (can't remember the exact time, I just know it was recent), where they sent a special drone up into a tornado to track everything the movies said it would track.
Only thing missing there is Helen Hunt 🙄
It's always fun to watch old stories being presented with new actors and new special effects. Some work, some don't. It's all creative stuff.

Those Legendary Pictures Godzilla films are childish bullshit aimed at little kids and teens. That's not the Godzilla I like. I always preferred the more gritty and serious versions of Godzilla - such as the original 1954 film, Godzilla 1985, and Shin Godzilla. All the kiddie shit is lame.
