There's a Kenwood amp for cheap at a local consignment ... I'm tempted to grab it after hearing your comments.
I wasn't impressed with my 1st Dolby Surround setup. But when I upgraded to Prologic II, that made a huge difference to my listening experience. So Jim Fosgate's stuff. But that's probably because so much stuff I have really isn't mastered in 4/5 channels. Great seeing your retro gear setup! and Audacity. Nice.

That's pretty awesome :) I do think they are a great starter amp if you're just getting into hifi, and will definitely improve the movie experience. I think in general good movies are meant to be as much of an experience as good music, and amps like this one are a fantastic first step to making a home theater. Let me know if you end up getting it, I'm curious what your experience will be :)

Do you mean Pro Logic or Pro Logic II because those are different. Dolby Pro Logic II didn't come around until the 2000's. Which are you talking about?

I have that same Tomita but i've never been able to access the dolby part. I have surround sound, but i think the way it works for stereo is not pro logic, i think it's more some.sort of DSP. Native surround though, no issues there.

The only thing missing is that there's no subwoofer output for deep richer thunderings bass response

Any receiver with Pro Logic II/IIx/IIz should be able to decode Dolby Surround matrixed signals. I recommend getting a used Harman Kardon receiver and checking out non-matrixed stereo sources with their Logic 7 upmixer.
I have a PC setup and use the Nugen Halo upmixer and absolutely love it. Of course, surround music is amazing, but native surround albums are few and far between.
I suggest looking into ways of incorporating room correction into your speaker setup. in any room you will naturally have sharp peaks in frequency response in the bass region. EQing those out will bring a few serious benefits - you will have linear bass response that follows what your speakers could have in a better room (that would require thousands invested in acoustic treatment, DIY or not), but bass will not be the only thing that will sound better to your ears - since you remove distractions in the bass, the midrange and treble become more clear and consistent. This perception happens due to a phenomenon known as acoustic masking. The difference will be so obvious that depending on your ambitions you may never want to listen to an uncorrected setup again lol
I enjoyed the video, and I hope you will continue making videos in the future. Loved the gaming segment. I think surround sound is criminally underlooked in gaming.

When was this video recorded? 1990? You should hear modern surround upmixers like the latest DSU, DTS-Neural X, and Auro 3D's Aurumatic upmixer. I've just received my Denon X4800H receiver and I love it, especially after Auddyssey calibration (5.2.4 config)

How well does the DSU work with legacy PL/PLII sources?

Heh, sorry about that, decided to try for comedy in that one. Perhaps bits would work better if I had a second person in the room. And thanks, I appreciate it!

Wow, if you're so hyped for dolby surround, wait till you see (or hear lol) 5.1, dts, true hd, hypersonic sound and atmos :)

I really do like what they've done with the technology, it works pretty well for only being a passive matrix. I plan on taking a look at Pro Logic 1 and 2as well, before getting into 5.1, but I'd love to see what other methods of surround have to offer! :)
