    Have you ever created a deep watering irrigation system for your trees? I would love to hear from you 🌻

      @@tamakoa-homestead we put 60cm of downpipe under our avo tree when we planted it in the fall, before we planted its guild around it. In our loose coarse sandy soil we need to encourage our plants to drink deeper in the soil.

    After you made a basin around each tree, make sure to fill the basin with thick mulch 10 to 20 cm, using shredded bark or pine needles, this will keep the roots cool and moisture in.

      You are absolutely spot on 🌻 I had a huge layer of leaf mulch on that blew away but you are right that I need to get it back on. I have been meaning to get more leaf mulch added but then adding a nice layer of pine needle mulch to hold the leaves down.
      Thanks for reminding me. I need to do this as a matter of urgency 💚

    Hello Craig, great idea using the pipe to water the roots directly. So much of the water evaporates when you try to water normally. I have seen it being used with drippers as well, they hang them down into the pipe and that does work for if you are not going to be able to get there often enough. I look forward to seeing how the trees respond to it. I've also been told it encourages roots to grow deeper faster than watering from ground level. Happy New Year❤️

      Hey hey, thanks for another great comment and yeah, I am really excited to see how this plays out as well. I wanted to rehydrate the ground first and next time I am there I am going to add in some liquid fertiliser to give them a good feed after the stress. Hopefully they can bounce back beautifully 🤞
      Thank you for the wishes 🙏 thank you for all your loyal support and I wish nothing but success in the year ahead 💚

    In addition to basins and mulch - planting succulents around the top and outside of the basin will shield the soil from the wind (which dries it out) as well as shading the ground (keeping moisture in!)

      What a brilliant idea, thank you 🙏 do you have any specofoc succulents in mind that would work well? I'm most definitely going to be adding lots of mulch but love your idea too 💚🌻

      @ maybe something from the Haworthia family that will stay on the ground and then something like spekboom near the basin rim that you could prune as necessary (chop and drop) (I can’t recall which trees you planted but if you look into guilds for that tree - the planting will the. all strengthen, compliment soil, pest resistance, water retention etc. God speed

    Super interesting video! Thanks so much for the info😊 We have a small piece of land in the klein karoo with some fruit trees and have also been experiencing the extreme heat with lack of rain. This video has given us some food for thought😉

    The clay really does make this method work really well thinking about it, here in our sandy soil there is no way I'd get water to stay in the pipe longer than a few minutes max.👍

    • @tamakoa-homestead
      @tamakoa-homestead  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, it really works incredibly well for clay and loamy soils but sand is always a struggle. When we were in Fish Hoek we struggled so back with nutrient and water retention and all that worked was regular cover cropping to build root mass that binds the sand and also lots and lots of leave mulch.
      For very sandy soil the clay pot option is probably the best, or as you very rightly say, dippers inside the tube under the ground. This could work great! 😁🌻

    • @meerfixe
      @meerfixe 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      For sandy soil you just drill one hole in the bottom and then insert a wicking rope into it! That's literally the system the groasis boxes use as well for desert environments.
      If not familiar, just Google "groasis box" and you will see what I mean.
      The wick just draws minimal water and keeps the roots moist like a clay pot would

      @@meerfixe what a brilliant idea! I never thought of that and it makes compete sense to slowly draw and release the water into the ground when needed. Absolutely brilliant and thank you for sharing 💚

    I am trying 2l coke bottle drip irrigation in my veggie patch experimentally at the moment to see witch way works best for me. Sandy soil for 150mm then clay. Going to try that when I plant the next tree.

      Oh nice! I've heard of this watering technique and I'm really interested to see how it works for you. Ease a you let me know?
      What I would do with a setup like yours is mix in lots of leaf mulch in the winter, od ant lots of very dense root ants, like black oats, vetch, etc. You want to create as much of a loamy soil as possible that will also help break up the soil.
      When we were in Fish Hoek it was just sand and these 2 things worked incredibly well. In 2 years we went from pure sand to a nice brown loamy soil and the plants started being happy 🌻

    I’m in early winter here. I had a nice winter garden last year but I was tied up with finishing my house, selling it and moving to where my garden is so gardening was low on my list of things to do. My garden was pitiful because we had a dry hot summer and I couldn’t be home to water it. I’m very interested to see how your water project goes.

    Your soil containing lots of clay with its water retention, I would not like to water close to the trunk as you said. I would rather not make a basin which would be guiding water to the trunk, but make a gutter on the drip line into which I would water the tree. I would fill the gutter with composted wood chips sifted from compost to check the evaporation.

      I'm not sure if you've seen before but a channel called Edge of Nowhere Farm create a really awesome multi-ring gutter sustem with thick mulch that works wonders for them. They are in the desert in the US and it's a really great way to keep adding gutter rings as the dripline extends 🌻
