I hear so much compassion in your story. I also see it differently.
I was obese as a child and have struggled with my weight all my life. Sure, kids were cruel, and their teasing went way too far, but adults were just as bad. Adults are STILL just as bad. It's because of this that I don't think parents are truly afraid of their children being corrupted by books that teach compassion and inclusivity.
Parents don't want those books because PARENTS don't want to feel pressure to change. People don't grow out of being intolerant or being bullies. They learn to pick their targets a little more carefully, but their attitudes about their superiority vs. fat people, or gay people, or people from other countries - those attitudes are unshakable. Unless, of course, their child is educated differently. Then THEY, the parent, has to face their own cruelty. I think the fact that even people who don't have children are part of the anti-inclusivity camp points to it being about THEM. They don't want society at large to revisit past injustice in any form BECAUSE THEY ARE AWARE OF THEIR COMPLICITY AND THEY WANT TO ESCAPE CENSURE. The argument that they are somehow protecting children is just a smokescreen for adults who are entitled bullies.
Unfortunately, the attitudes of parents are a stronger predictor of how children will see the world than a chance encounter with a single book, so these folks are generally successful in passing down their malice to the next generation.

I absolutely agree! The parents these days of kids who are in grade school, middle school high school these pants many of the parents are just terrible people.
They would back their kid if they slugged their teacher right in the face.
      My daughter teaches middle school.
She has two more years and then she’s on the deck giving this program for working 10 years in a low income school. After that her loans are paid she will likely NOT TEACH anymore.
I wasn’t fat as a kid, but I fell off my bike when I was around first grade and broke my two front teeth half off and they had to cap them with silver caps.
That was the start of me being made fun of all the time.
Thankfully I got them changed going into junior high school. Peace ✌🏻 to you.

Amazing comments here, i think that way too, and I think that when society is confronting these parents who are behaving this way they are buying and playing into their little make believe narratives, and what’s happening is that as a country we are collectively going like “well they are asking to ban things that they don’t know better, or they are unaware that they are being manipulated” I wish we would just stop giving them the benefit of the doubt on this, because it’s not uncommon for those people have social media and all inform them of things, and in that back and forth you can see how they are continuing with their rhetoric.
They know better, but like you pointed out, they just just want to participate and do their part in the misinformation campaign.
I started posting on my Twitter account for this midterm elections, and it’s like 90% of the time, when I confront their talking point and I start in a manner that I’m just trying to inform them of something, it doesn’t take very long for them to show their true colors about which side they’ve taken in the cultural wars they engage in.
One of, if not THE worst thing right now is transphobia, few things boils my blood more than this, I don’t know any transgender personally, but for some reason this is one I can’t take it anymore, people are being evil about this. Just flat out evil. The entire time I’m talking about this on Twitter I’m feeling this frustration and this angst, and I want to just stop engaging and just never looking at it again, but then I remember that I’m not someone dealing with that feeling, of not feeling at home with your own body, I can’t even begin to imagine the feeling some teens must be feeling going through this, they deserve all the support and help in this fight as they can get, and now I know why you have people criticizing and attacking the trans activists, it’s because trans activists are doing their job well! They are not the ones who are wrong in this, and fortunately time is on their side.

Good morning, Rev Ed. I lived with my grandmother for the first five years of my life, and periodically thereafter. She was a wonderful, loving woman (yes, I was her "favorite"). She was also a Spiritualist; had little regard for mainstream religion (but that's another story). And she cared about everyone and everything (I remember her collecting ants on newspaper to move them outside). Because of generational conditions, she left school after third grade and went on to teach herself about everything she could. She read, omg she read! A first generation Bohemian/Italian, she was an outsider, but she refused to find others "different." When my brother came out, she was the first to accept him, just as he was. And she accepted me, just as I was. I so loved your message; she taught me compassion, empathy, and strength. I miss her terribly, even after all these years. Thank you, again. Be blessed.

I've always felt that people who want to "protect" their children from the ideas in "those kinds of books" aren't afraid their children will be ashamed of themselves or who they are, they are afraid their children will come to them asking how this was allowed to happen and, yes, even "why do you behave that way?". Good job, as always.

I have said it before here on your channel and it is something I was taught in Catholic School. Suffering teaches us compassion. When you read, for example, The Diary of Anne Frank or To Kill a Mocking Bird or Huckleberry Finn or you watch your cousin suffer with who they are while you are growing up - you suffer a bit for the characters or persons and thank God it helps us to be more compassionate. We are all born with self interest, compassion is a learned behavior and it is our parents and societies job to help us to learn it. The more it is taught and learned the better the world will be. Thank you Father.

    • @myrrhis01
      @myrrhis01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Perhaps suffering gives us the opportunity to learn compassion, but it isn't guaranteed. The attitudes that people bring with them can skew a chance to learn into just another example of how they are being persecuted, or it can teach them to be greedy so that they never have to be the one that goes without. The more rigid someone is, the more black and white their thinking tends to be, the less likely they are to take any learning from life events. Open hearts tend to respond more readily to opportunities for growth.

My mom remarried when I was 8. I adored my step dad. When I reached my early teens I started to recognize the way he talked about people with different backgrounds, the derogatory terms he used for anyone who was not of white English-speaking ancestry. It made my skin crawl and I rejected his thinking.
Kids repeat what they hear and the first influence upon their lives are adults, family members.
Those who reject letting their children be exposed to other ideas do so because they fear their views will be rejected, their prejudices being rejected and having to look at themselves to figure out why.
Let the children read. Let them experience the beauty of the world. We can make it a better place if we do.

@@georgedunn320 that may be, but as I said children First learn from their parents. Those who are not exposed to other means of thought often continue the patterns of their early influences, which is why we are still battling these issues. Add in the expansion of those harmful attitudes into & from church pulpits and we have a setup for terrible outcomes. I fear those future generations are headed towards looking at those trying to break the hate/intolerance cycle as the ones in the wrong.

    • @georgedunn320
      @georgedunn320 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@amyturpen4726 Well, tolerance can go either way. It usually reflects economics and perception of abundance or scarcity of resources whether a society becomes more inclusive or more restrictive. As America and Western Europe have been in a generally long-haul pattern of increasing wealth, they can "afford" to be more ecumenical; when times are hard, attitudes tend more toward parochialism.
If times get tough and stay that way, not unlikely due to the exhaustion of resources and/or such extreme concentrations of wealth that humanity begins its bifurcation into the Eloi and the Morlocks, we could see pushback against all kinds of equality "gains," as whichever factions hold power decide there's not enough for everybody.

    • @Singmour
      @Singmour ปีที่แล้ว

I confess that I was a terrible bully when I was in school (trying to mask my own insecurities). Now as an adult who has found forgiveness through Christ and a daily conversation with God through the Holy Spirit, I have no problem expressing compassion or accepting people who are different from me. As an adult I understand that history is written by the victor, so every history book has some slant to it, often unintended. But people who are trying to overcompensate for slanted history by rewriting history and fabricating another version are wrong. Also, are you aware that some of these school books which are written to teach tolerance actually go into graphic detail about how to perform varied sex acts. Not something to teach any school children. Also, public displays of nudity and giant sex toys by MILITANT gays do not help to create an appreciation for those with a different sexual orientation. Perhaps you are unaware of the drag queen story hours that are being propagated at public libraries across the fruited plain. The book burnings you refer to are likely a reaction to the militant corruption of children. Mr Rogers never needed to dress up like a black man to teach love and acceptance. He simply washed and dried the feet of a black man. Though he was somewhat controversial for his generation, we revere him as a hero who was able to gently challenge social norms.

Strangely, your video actually helped me find compassion and forgiveness for the kids who said mean things to me when I was a child. I realized that like you, when you called your grandmother fatso, many of those kids were just repeating words they had heard from others. They may not have realized how hurtful they were being. I live in the same community I grew up in and throughout my adulthood would run into people I grew up with. As adults they were often nice to me and didn't even seem to remember how awful they were as kids. I never let them know that I remembered, because it would have seemed petty and probably was. All I know is that their comments affected my self esteem even when I was older, through my teens and even early twenties. I hope kids today are exposed to books and other educational materials that will help them to be compassionate and empathetic human beings.

When it comes to the history of slavery, and what happened to the indigenous people, all over the world, absolutely must be told. With this knowledge, perhaps the next generation will ensure that our society makes sure that reperations are made for what happened. It's important that this happens so that we can truly move on, and make up for what past generations did.
What conservatives are doing is purely political, and that just pisses me off.
It's extremely important for them to understand what happened, and like you stated, so that they learn empathy, and compassion. Yes, there will be some feelings of guilt, I often have them, but give these kids some credit.
Same with the other books that teach about different people, and how they are just like us.
I'm so tired of the division being pushed by conservatives. It's absolutely exhausting, and does nothing but stop society from getting better, and more equitable.
As always, I will be sharing this video.
Even if it reaches only one person, it's worth it.

When I was a kid, Polak jokes were all the rage. We weren't sure where they came from (there was an official Polish joke book which was one of a series of racial / cultural joke catalogues that tried to be light-hearted about it. Other than processing my own racism, it lead me to a deep dive about Poland and Poles, specifically why a whole like of jokes were had about their incompetence. I have two of my favorite stories regarding Polish cleverness:
One was of Marian Rejewski, Jerzy Różycki and Henryk Zygalski who reconstructed the Enigma Cypher Machine in 1932 and worked out how it was being used at the time to encrypt messages between German ministries, by 1939 down to the wire (two weeks before Operation Fall Weiss) they met physically with Allied intelligence, delivering them operating Enigma machines (the versions available at the time) and comprehensive encryption/decryption protocols, which gave Bletchley Park a considerable leg up on cryptanalysis of Axis Enigma communications.
The other was the Armia Krajowa or Polish Home Army, who developed a Molotov Cocktail that didn't need to be lighted. Sulfuric acid was added to the fuel, and the wick on the outside was coated with crystalized potassium chlorate and sugar. The chemical reaction caused when the bottle shattered would provide the heat and the flash necessary to ignite the fuel.
All this raised a question why Poles were so disparaged, and it seems similar to the way Koreans are thought of as a lesser people by their neighboring peoples. Poland and Korea are both highly contested regions, historically held by one of two or three nearby empires as a buffer between themselves and belligerent empires, so they both have long histories of never quite having enough autonomy to decide their own destiny. The bad jokes are a product of imperialists disregarding the people who live there in the process of justifying conquest and occupation for their own interests. It's a rough lot, being a small people whose resources are coveted by bigger nations.

    • @lindacole9674

Thanks. This was enlightening. I always thought the jokes were a response to all the dumb lyrics in those polka albums my Polish relatives were always playing. "Round and firm and fully-packed, it was hanging on the rack, who stole the keishka, ha ha ha ha ha."
"In heaven there is no beer, that's why we drink it here." Etc.

Hard to fathom young people having to fight for books to not be banned. Books are such learning tools for empathy, values and understanding history.

My grandfather was the most important person in my life with my father being the next most important. None of the women in my family were anything like the tender, loving and empathetic people the men in my family were. Unfortunately they are long gone which is something to be expected by the time you reach my age. I'm lucky enough to have two absolutely wonderful sons who are both in their forties. The youngest would have been a very good father but chose not to have children because of climate change. Now he's even more glad to have made what was a painful choice for him because our country is in danger of slipping into a fascist dictatorship with Christian nationalism as our national religion although our constitution calls for a secular government.

    Rev Trevors,
You made a comment about parents wanting their children to have more and become more than themselves.
I certainly agree with you that it should be this way, both the desire of parents and the success of children.
However, I don't believe the book banners/burners truly feel this way.
They do NOT want their children to become more evolved than themselves.
They want immortality through their offspring "clones."
They want their own biases, ideas, and beliefs to live forever through their successive generations.
When a book, a school, or a teacher, or a pastor like you, exposes their offspring to ideas that could potentially cause such spiritual or even just social growth in their offspring as to enable them to surpass their parents, or simply not carry on their biases, ideas, or beliefs you are threatening their desired immortality.
You might as well be holding a fully loaded AR-15 to their heads with your finger on the trigger.
And that is why these people are reacting as they are with escalating violence, and escalating hysterical and utterly insane claims.
May God bless every person on Earth with the fully conscious and permanent awakening to our own respective true divine souls and dissolve all ignorance and falsehood.

By removing the books, it will only keep children ignorant about others, and will facilitate bigotry and hate. By removing the books and burying their head in the sand, those people who area different cease to exist. (Sarcasm) People who are different from you will still be there and want the same things as everyone else. The people who push this movement of restricting materials or teachings are taking us backward. I am actually still friends with her and used to ask my brothers not to call her that but I was just as guilty of using these kinds of nicknames for other kids too. I keep thinking that, if someone keeps feeling guilty, maybe they need to do a little self-reflection and decide, within themselves, if they're really doing things that are worth feeling guilty about. When you think about it, guilt exists to give us warning signs that maybe we're not acting right or we're not having a good effect on other people or there's something in our lives that we're neglecting. Trying to ignore feeling that isn't a healthy idea. If you're feeling bad about anything, pay attention to why you feel that way and consider if there's something in your life that needs to be adjusted. That's being an adult and taking personal responsibility. If, when you consider yourself and your life, you conclude that your feelings don't come from things you're doing but from things that other people have done, then say so and point out better examples to the younger generations. Then, you can feel good that you saw a situation, that you considered it and understood it, and acted on it with fortitude.

Thank you Rev Ed for your very timely message ... it helped me recall a couple of of my own memories.
"Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned (doomed) to repeat it" .. George Santayana
"Read in order to live" ... Gustave Flaubert
The first memory was when my son, who was in highschool at the time (the 1990s) .. He came to me with a question?? .. It was about slavery and guilt. His question was .. "Why should we have to feel guilty about something we had nothing to do with??" ... something he had heard in school.
My immediate response was ... "We remember son for the "consciousness of a nation" .. to be awake and aware of our humanity, the world, ourselves including those feelings of sorrow and sadness of what we are capable of to our fellow human beings and must be vigilant against !!!
Also, recalled another memory .. being 18 yrs. old when I first read ... 'Night' .. by Elie Wiesel on the tragedy of the "Holocaust" ... I recalled what it made me feel and what it taught me about .. Compassion, Tolerance, Prejudice, Diminishing others, Scapegoating, and the Inflicting of Suffering (and YES even death), on our fellow human beings ... The exact opposite of what I came to understand more and more over time of our humanity and what it is to be truly humane !!!
Thank you again Rev. Ed for all your very needed and timely messages !!!

Thank you for this. History is a great teacher, but only when it is honestly presented rather than used as a tool to form a society. Guilt is for the person who committed the act, not their children. The Bible says the sins of the fathers will be visited on the children and that has been twisted. Perhaps the Bible was saying that if a generation exploits another race with slavery the children should make reparations. We all know how well that would go down today. I think the Bible says the children should recognize the wrongs done and take responsibility for not repeating them.

Where did the frontal cortex come from? Who programmed it's development ? Who created it's purpose? Could this be the same creator who gave us moral laws, free will, the first man and woman marriage and offspring. So many first in their perfect order. As this great creator what about the laws to help us understand right from wrong? Is it possible that we reject the possibility of a God (who's wrath is upon us at birth because we are born into sin) because we want to create God in our own image? Is it possible that due to rejecting God the world has lost its way and we see an increase in violence, suicides, drug use, domestic violence, sexual violence, stress disorders, divorce, abortions ( a taboo word), global conflict, family dysfunction, governments that rob and pillage their citizen, and the list goes on and on. How comforting to hear a man of the cloth who accepts all things and in doing so allow justification for all manner of things which in turn opens up a door unlimited, which all manner of are accepted. Well if it's ok for men to love men and be sexually intimate and the same for women ( after all I am born that way) men to dress and surgically have parts remove and other parts added and women too. What about an adult man or woman who has a sexual attraction toward children? Their argument is no different I am born that way and therefore just as the LGBTQ and Trans I too should be allowed to express and partake in what is an innate part of my being and intimately love children? Hmmm. Slippery slope leading into a deep rabbit hole there.
Maybe God inspired the writing of the book of love ( the bible ) so we can avoid the dangers of free will without structure. He then out of mercy sent us his perfect Son to die and take the entire sin of the world so that we can through the perfect Son and accepting him as Lord be once again be made righteous (when covered by Jesus) and be reunited with our heavenly father. Our battle is spiritual, God bless and Love you all

The most open-minded parents are concerned about this, the last people who would censor books dealing with racism & bullying.
In the 1970s a group called the Paedophile Exchange made inroads into the British Labour Party with soft support from The Guardian.
