How is this British America's Cup challenge different?

- 'We feel on the back foot, but that's good for us....'
'A few things didn't go our way in the last Cup...it was a painful pill to swallow....'
'We're all concerned about the conditions in Barcelona....'
INEOS Britannia skipper Sir Ben Ainslie and Operations Director Dave Endean talk candidly and exclusively to Matt Sheahan about how this challenge differs from the last Cup attempt down in Auckland.
There is little doubt that on the technical front, the 37th America's Cup is the most challenging anyone can remember. Design teams are having to get their heads around having just one shot at the AC75 that will be used once the points start to count while taking their cues from the 12m development boat. Meanwhile, the crews hare having to get to grips with the AC40 as well as the SailGP F50. As a result it's a pretty complex Cup when it comes to team management too.
For those, including the British who have chosen to take part in SailGP as well as the racing in the AC40 one designs there is nowhere to hide when things go wrong.
The bottom line is that you need to be thick skinned as well as talented in this Cup, traits that clearly haven't escaped the attention of Ainslie and Endean.
Filmed during the Preliminary regatta in Vilanova it's a fascinating insight into just how complex this Cup cycle is along with how the British team is taking it on.

Great interviews. Thanks!
The AC 40 I reckon is a format designed with logistics in mind. I see it eventually replacing the F50s when the fleet needs an overhaul. Although I’m not sure how small course friendly they are. This AC40 regatta is a double ground test. AC75 test and Sail GP replacement test.
Anyone that doubts Ben's talent, commitment, or determination to win absolutely has no idea about him or who he is. If there is a way to win, he has proven time and time again that he will find it.
These boats are just like F1, the engineering has a much bigger influence than the athletes. It's obvious that Team NZ have engineered the best solution, so their sailors are at a massive advantage.
Looks very promising.
A monohull with foils is a cat when on foils and rubbish when off. Great design.
We keep hearing Ben is the best sailor ever, maybe its time for him to prove it, go team NZ
Deja vu of 2017 and 2021.
As a sailing purest, for me Sail GP is a bit….meh. Watching great sailors drift around in no wind because the tv rights dictate they have to is really quite boring and a bit embarrassing for the sport.
But they are still quicker than most other boats on the water in that light wind aren't they?
It was never intended to entertain sailors, it was designed to bring in new viewers to the sport.
Time on the water matters
I hope they do a bit better than the poor display in sailgp
My wish is to bring the Auld Mug back to Newport.
Sounds beat already.
Has Captain Crash tried to kill anyone lately?
How to get rid of the cavitation? Lift the foil above the surface, and use the surface tension as your lift point. The rudder could still act as the anchor point. This means the foil arm and pivot needs to act like a racing suspension. But, this can also mean the boat can push itself up from the water and the inner arm could extend further for more counter momentum and less unwanted counter momentum, as in when lifted out of the water.
you mean planing?
@@weatheranddarkness Yes and no. The side arms would have a "spoon" type of shape in the end that would be planing, or skipping on the surface, but the hull itself would still rest of the ground effect air matress and anchored by the rudder. The rudder would then have both horizontal and vertical flaps for controls. This way the initial launch in the air whould have more lift, and with the different medium to pass for the foil arms, more top speed.
@@weatheranddarkness And for the next evolution, make the arms completely wing shaped and glide the boat over the water connected to water only by the rudder. I have one of these designed to be made out of wood, but the initial launch would be done by jet propulsion. Just to make the acceleration easier.
@@oikkuoek but how do you generate power from the wind with nothing to resist side force?
You're such a genius, why aren't you working at NASA or Tesla, Hell, Ferrari is looking for super geniuses like you.
Eh apparently not much.
Is Ben even sailing anymore?
They are off the pace. They also made mistakes out on the course. At this level you have to sail a flawless race and have a fast boat. As usual with the Brits they talk themselves up, but ,so far, have failed to deliver. They have a huge budget and, according to them, God is at the helm. We shall see......
Let the J class boats of old keep their America cup race original and separate from these foiling monsters of today!…it just ain’t the same!
America's cup should be good for sailing.....the allure, the history.....but it just isnt. The AC kills sailing in so many ways. Think we need to just give up on it and move fully to sail gp, like F1 exists as a the pinnacle for motorsport. Pity as I want to love AC.......would be happier with high performance version of a TP52 ie as a pure inshore boat that planes very easily.
I think the Brit’s need to learn the same lesson that the kiwis did three cup cycles ago. Unfortunately due to egos I don’t think they will.
What a special little know all you are.
....after all that chat, is anybody out there actually confident in these guys and putting any money on Ineos progressing thru the challengers series to race team NZ?
Nope
nope. They talk the talk leading up to the cup, but don't back it up on the water.
@@roderick167 How do they talk any different to others?
It’s a tall order. Can’t see it.
I have no faith in Ineos and Ainsley .. this interview is already apologizing for the AC 40 regattas which we have just witnessed in Jeddah before they even started .. and as they said there is nowhere to hide behind technology failures .. they are one designs
😂
what about the hydrogen foiling support boats? no one is talking about it. fuck the ac40.. no one cares
If you dont sail and just do on the computer you wont succed get on the water stop talking
Or get a Parrot on board and then you would suck seed!🤭
That will be fun watching cyclists sailing , but we shouldn't worry too much , as long as we have a SIR on helm to win every start......
you mean yesterday's man??.....Ben Ainslie! Past his best IMO, slower on all points vs the some of the young guns. Was probably at his peak 10+ years ago now.
@@CG-99Yeah, his best was really long , long ago. In AC racing he was total embarrassment .
Talk is cheap.
lol. Ben can’t help himself. Trying to craft the Poms as underdogs because Inios hasn’t COMMITTED to this cup cycle like other teams.
Pathetic excuse Sir Ben, imo!
I think this is not sailing it is flying. It is not in the true spirit of sailing so what next. A plane on a stick sticking in the water total make money.
