Can the French win the America's Cup?

  • The French Orient Express Racing Team were the last to enter the 37th America's Cup and last to get onto the water. But, as their head man Stephan Kandler and CEO Bruno Dubois explained in our exclusive interview, they are not here simply to make up the numbers. Both have considerable experience in the Cup and in other grand prix classes. Kandler was the man behind the French K-Challenge campaign back in 2007 while Dubois was in charge when Dongfeng Race Team won the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race. There is no doubt that both are experienced and accomplished players, but as history confirms, the Cup has defeated many a good campaign. With so little current Cup experience in this new fast-moving foiling world it would be easy to dismiss this late campaign, but this time you could also argue things are different. SailGP has delivered a series of events where teams can hone their foiling skills and Orient Racing Team members are in both. The French SailGP team has Dubois behind the scenes and has enjoyed a string of successes. When they turned up at the first AC event in Vilanova they won the first race in the AC40.
So, there could not have been a better time and reason to talk to the two men at the top of this campaign to find out how far they think this team could go in an event that the French have never got close to winning.

The beginning of a new French era. I expect that ETNZ shared some racing data which might allow French improvements. All the best 👍🏾

There is a 'secret' being hidden here (amongst all the teams). The AC has moved from being a 'one off' challenge' to becoming a franchised series. Regardless of the result of the coming AC, it will next be sailed in Barcelona again, and according to the existing class rules. The French team (and others) have 'joined in' to an event rather structured like F1. The AC Deed is really no longer applicable - rather like the F1 'concord agreement', you either 'stay in' the rolling agreement, or you loose your right to compete for it - just my interpretation. However what is for sure, unlike previous AC events, none of these teams are aiming to simply win 'the next edition' - they are all in it for the longer term. Which is why the French are so reasonably relaxed about 'winning it this time', they know that there is going to be a 'next time'.

it's true, but AC is still different as it is not controlled by ann overhead organisation, defender plan the futur and it will not change, of course it have to modernize to ensure investment and contunity, but look at bermuda, everyone exept TNZ was agree to keep the platform and at the end everything changed. the beauty of it is not the progressive planification of the next event but the probability of the deed being applied literraly, and with no budget limit team this is a real possibility now and then

I am sure what much of what you want to say is correct. However do not expect any of the Defender or Challengers to deviate from the plan that is laid out so far. The next AC is already scheduled for Barcelona (2024) but so is the next one after that - contract already agreed), but better than that all the current 'Defender and Challengers are driving towards a tiered program to bring in youth and Women competitors, and a regular AC40 series. Forget the old AC 'protocol' - it remains, but has been superceeded by a group of teams who will agree to its ongoing development. The AC is now a 'franchise' - don't expect any legal challenge to that" @@vallsz

and you are basing that idea on 'what' exactly? Have you seen their final boat on the water? I would be surprise if you had - it is not even built yet. Team INEOS' crew is at least equal to any of their competitors - the results will only be seen on the waters during the trials and the final matches.

America's Cup needs to return to either J boats with wood hulls or 12 meters. F cats in the AC. Real sailors race J boats

It is a development class, it will never return to 'J Boats' or the 12m - happily for those of us who love those old boats we can still see them racing - so enjoy that whilst the AC class continues to do what it was always designed to do, 'evolve'.
