If I am hungry before bed I cannot get to sleep. Many times when I cannot sleep I have I gotten up, had a big snack/small meal, and then fell right to sleep. The sleep was good.

I’ve had insomnia probably my whole life but this past year taking care of my grandma with Alzheimer’s had brought a lot of stress and very poor sleep. What seems to be working for me recently is this: Try to be more social. I was focusing on myself too much. My goals, my discipline, diet/health, but I forgot one thing through it all. Being social. Christmas forced myself to be in the same space as family. Going out of my room to enjoy the festivities with them because that’s what God/Jesus would want. I come to start feeling emotions. I’m not as cold and bitter as I was and I think being isolated like the Grinch makes you well..like the Grinch. Number 2: lower your cortisol/adrenaline levels before bed. Cortisol is anything that worries you and adrenaline is anything that excites you. Try not to feel those too strongly before bed. Number 3 and this is a big one for me recently is progressive muscle relaxation. I’ve had stiff muscles because of the stress. I’ve had them since high school but what has helped me get rid of that pain is by strengthening my back muscles and loosening those knots. They hurt/feel tender when you push into them but it gives so much relief. I found doing the Superman exercise before sleep has helped. If you can’t relax muscles like that I try to mentally relax them. It feels weird like anxiety or like you’re falling and it takes discipline to work those weak muscles. Like moving your toes individually but it works. In terms of diet no fried or heavy foods before bed except if it’s at 7. Look up what foods are good to eat before bed like ones containing tryptophan and melatonin. Don’t eat high histamine foods before bed. Though you can test to see if you have a tolerance towards them. Check your magnesium, vitamin d levels just check your blood work in general it’s good to see how your body is doing.
