Never Get KO'd!!

  • Many students are simply afraid to ask. It seems too obvious. They don't want to appear stupid. But self-defense isn't light sparring or chi-sao. We all know that but often don't face the implications in our training. In so-called "street fights" we're likely going to see vicious right-hand swings and hyper aggression from our attacker. In this video we provide three essential training tips so that you're ready for that. After all, what good does it do to major in minors? Who cares if we're super good at some classroom drill but then get KO'd by an angry knucklehead because we were ignorant of combat essentials?
    Don't miss this one. Learn these simple (but brutal) truths and then add the lessons to your training so that you have the tactical skill and muscle memory when it counts. You won't regret it.

    *Very well explained. As a JKD beginner with just a few months of experience, I realised the problem of moving back too much in sparring vs circular. Moving back doesn't allow me to counter as well as if moving sideways. Thanks for the explanation!*

    Sifu jason, I have been watching and following you for years, I have said many times that you are 1of the best teachers out there, is there any chance you can do a video on fitness and weight loss, this is one area I am struggling with, I can see you are extremely fit and ripped, lean and not so mean, GOD BLESS YOU sifu jason, may GOD keep you healthy and safe

      Wow…thanks for that. “Lean and not so mean” really made me laugh, by the way. And as for the video idea, that’s a good one. I’ll get on that. It’s a great subject that really impacts the quality of our lives, so I understand and appreciate your struggle. Hopefully we can get that out there soon for ya. Thanks!

    What is your opinion of the 4 corners jkd defence vs forearm covers for dealing with haymakers and overhand rights?

    • @JKDandWingChun
      @JKDandWingChun  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Great question and maybe a good idea for a video all by itself (as this one was more general). I think parries work great defensively and when combined with good footwork and counter-attacks, they’re tough to beat. They especially work well in an environment where you aren’t wearing gloves (self-defense). Many people today are too reliant on the gloves for defense and that’s a huge mistake, so parries and four corners are much better suited for reality as far as that goes.
      Again, great question and maybe we’ll put a full video together on that. Thanks for watching.

    Lots of stuff here but I'll just say this: WTF is a street fight? Self defense is not about a duel...
    Wing Chun has what as a starting point? Just standing there, no Bai Jong, just a dude standing similar to (yee jee kim young ma) ... What does that enable? Well if you study the system or even just human movement that standard stance facilitates angling... And that is what Wing Chun is all about all day... Wing Chun is about making a small flank, (angling off) and then (entering) and taking them apart...with legs and arms together breaking down their structure as we go...
    I am surprised to see an emphasis on dueling... Self defense is usually not a duel and involves dealing with a sudden threat standing in front of you or worse...

    • @JKDandWingChun
      @JKDandWingChun  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not sure where you derive the dueling idea. We’re talking about a sudden and unavoidable attack. As was clearly shown (within the minute mark) a self-defense scenario very often involves a blitzing attacker firing wild right hands. There’s so much video evidence across TH-cam that confirms this. Thus, styles make fights and if confronted by such an attacker - especially if he’s significantly larger, these tips are essential in our opinion. I think you’re confusing training footage with dueling. Oh, and as a catch-all, we sometimes refer to unavoidable violence as a “street fight.” We never condone consensual violence in any way other than organized training/sparring drills. Hope that cleared up the confusion.

    • @trondyne3513
      @trondyne3513 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JKDandWingChun So, no disrespect.. If you are talking about a "sudden attack" unexpected, which is rare then when do you get into a fighting position? When do you get your chin down? Do we have time to adopt a fighting stance, etc or is that even appropriate? What I saw was more a fighting scenario vs a SD scenario. Are you going to be in Bai Jong in that Black Swan moment? Of course that's not a SD position that's a fighting position.The fighting scenario might happen where the adversary announces his intent or we are otherwise already aware an attack is coming but often it's not the case, it's often subtle. Hence scenario training. Lots of ways a threat can manifest... A "sudden right" isn't usually from a vacuum...there are indicators, warnings, set ups, words; the threat may make excuses to get into your space - there are clear body signals - how do we handle that? Getting into a fighting stance is often not the right response.
      Scenario training deals with these things..above and beyond, fight tactics. De-escalation, the Fence, the Interview, the pre-emptive attack (SPEAR), body language, how to avoid escalation, etc are key. Fighting tactics, stances, etc, aren't things I generally associate with SD and classical arts often show this by starting from very neutral positions. As an example Wing Chun generally starts from a "I'm just standing here" position vs a "fighting position" and once you go you GO all out - there may not be room to move around or time to do anything other than hurt the threat and run, etc.
      Many students will think of fighting tactics but not address SD tactics which often have nothing to do with fighting but instead how to avoid the fight, read intent or set up an ambush and escape..

      Congrats on your accomplishments and thanks for taking the time to comment. I will say, however, that I’m unsure if you understood the video. We weren’t talking about blocks, covers, parries, slipping, clinching, takedowns, etc. We spoke about using footwork to mitigate heavy pressure from a likely larger/stronger opponent. Then we talked about keeping one’s chin down to reduce the risk of getting clipped. Lastly, we spoke to training to attack a soft target like the groin. Not sure how you can possibly find contradictions in that. As for movement, it works quite well for Bivol. Sugar Ray Leonard. Roy Jones in his heyday. Ali. Gene Tunney. Lots of evidence that a moving target is harder to hit and that it allows smaller guys/women a better chance than standing in the pocket. Anyway, thanks again for watching.

      You’re right! Absolutely. On second thought, don’t move at all. Just stand there and duke it out. And keep your chin up too…forget about keeping it down. What’s the worst thing that can happen, right? Oh, and forget about hitting the groin if it’s open. Go for the hardest targets. Be a man!!!! Thanks for the quality input. We’ll do another video on this now. 😎
