@ I just suffered through it and much of it was a bad superhero franchise/scifi rippoff with some Trek Sound effects. Nothing in Section31 is Trek, it’s could pass as a Suicide Squad spin-off in space.
A movie about Section 31 you might expect, a spy thriller, a gritty cold war like story but set in space. Instead the trailer looks like this is about a night club madam and her weird staff.
With a guy at the bar who cannot exist because the last two members of his species were male and were last seen killing each other. So either he's a time traveler from people without that technology, or he's a guy in half-white or half-black face.
Man I was hyped for S31 spinoff but was immediately turned off when I saw it was action packed, this defeats the purpose of section 31, a clandestine organization, keeping star fleet safe in the shadows
Newer Trek never understood Section 31. They're not supposed to be cool James Bond type spies going on fun adventures. They're supposed ask the audience hard questions about how much of our rights we would give up to protect ourselves from potentially existential threats, and how far we are willing to take pre-emptive action in order to neutralize threats before they become true dangers. I know characters dealing with moral and ethical dilemmas is boring for some people, but that's what most Star Trek is about.
It’s not boring. It can be exciting as in a build up of moral questions, spycraft to a point of action that’s well earned. Instead, you get a multi-colored cinematography, seizure inducing, ADHD 90 minute spectacle.😂
Well said. That perfectly encapsulates how I’ve felt with most of new trek. Everyone was caught up in fighting about the political messaging but I didn’t really care about the politics war, especially since it’s trek. I just felt the entire vibe and aesthetic was off. Oh well

Nah. Yeoh threw herself under the bus. It was Yeoh's idea for Philippa Georgiou to have a Spin-Off because she loved playing the character so much. And as one of the producers of "SECTION 31", Yeoh deserves as much blame as Kurtzman. Hell. Even moreso. I know folks want to treat Michelle Yeoh as "royalty". But let's be REAL here. She's had some clunkers in her decades-long career. Every "Icon" does.
@LLNYRN they only went ahead after she won the Oscar. Otherwise, it would never have been made. Her being an executive producer was only honorary. They could have least put some effort into the writing. Everything was overly derivative. Although the cinema photography, fx, and production design were fine. I don't see Yeoh as royalty, but she definitely deserves better. Discovery was a massive misstep in general.
@imarxb Michelle is a hard worker, and earned her stripes. Hopefully she can have a 2nd Trek that will be more her style of story telling and uplifting spirit.
No it doesn't, they were part of the original charter. Their job is to do what good people can't or won't to protect their civilization, quietly. Not run around like an armed band of thugs with comm badges everyone can recognize.
I seem to recall back in the late 90’s early aughts some Star Trek novels that involved section 31. Or am I confusing it with something else. Are they the temporal timeline police of the federation or am I incorrect?
Each time the characters mentioned Section 31 or Starfleet I had to slap myself on the forehead, because I kept forgetting they had anything to do with Federation business. The way they are portrayed in this "movie" they look like some kind of Suicide Squad in space, or violent Ocean's Eleven ripoffs. In space, of course.
Thank you!! I love Michelle Yeoh, I really do, but I don't understand why, in-universe, Discovery trusts her. The fact that she 'redeemed' herself doesn't erase all the evil she did. The only real reason it kind of worked for Vader and Kylo Ren is because they died sacrificing themselves, and even then, it doesn't erase the horrible things they did.
The trailer looks REAL bad. Michelle is great and the idea of Section 31 is interesting and has been great in small doses in the previous series' but this thing just doesnt look great. This Robert guy is right on the money, he knows his shit when it comes to Trek.
THANK YOU. People on this comments understand Section 31. This movie looks like some straight garbage. Section 31 should be about some really shady immoral guys who clash against honorable Starfleet officers for the greater good. That’s when I would expect Michelle Yeoh’s character as Phillips to somehow get blackmailed into becoming head of Section 31. But they lose control of her because she probably had all the people who hired her assassinated. Then she’s stuck between her old ways and the influence of Michael Burnman. So she forces Section 31 even more into the shadows and does ruthless things until she gets taken out for real and Section 31 falls apart and dies. Or at least everyone thinks Section 31 is dead. Because the successors don’t exist anymore and they work really hard to keep it that way. That would be a great sci-fi/spy/action movie that lets everyone bring their acting game to the table.
Strange New World, Lower Decks and Picard season 3 were/are awesome. I don’t have high hopes for Section 31, but I’ll watch to kill some time. Hopefully it’s so bad it’s good.
There’s 1 hour 34 minutes I will never get back. Perhaps it would have been better if the bomb had gone off at the start of the show and save us all from the terrible script and even worse acting.
I just finished watching the movie and I was more impressed than I thought I would be. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
So I guess Robert Meyer Burnett hasn't watched Strange New Worlds or Lower Decks, if he thinks that the current writers cannot write optimistic Star Trek anymore? And, yeah, I expect Section 31 to be horrifically bad. I don't know how the same people who produce STW and LD can be this bad, but apparently that's still in them, after STD and Picard S1 and S2 were a horrific failures of the same kind.
I'm more annoyed that none of the videos about the show go into detail what it's about and what's so bad about it beyond "it's so bad and the reviews are so bad"...
Wow, I watch Rob's live shows all the time, and the difference in lighting here is reminding me of the Tim Allen shaving scene in The Santa Clause, looking forward to his long review/rant.
They lost the guy who made it to Marvel because Kurtzman wouldn't okay more from him while making this drek. Probably couldn't stand that the guy actually made something Star Trek fans liked in one season while Kurtzman hasn't been able to with 7+ across more than one show.
Paramount did a disservice to the Star Trek franchise with this movie. I had no idea what the plot was. This story did not come together in a coherent manner. It was like a bad conglomeration of different ideas from old shows/movies ( the bar scenes; stranded in a strange galaxy; the wild & crazy adventures of a cast of misfits). I would have been more entertained if I looked at the side of a wall and watched paint peel.
I can't tell if Alex Klutzman is just incredibly inept or if he purposely enjoys destroying other people's franchises the way a serial killer enjoys murdering random people...
The Georgiou character was always a larger than life character bordering on pantomime. Anyone that has followed the Section 31 world in Trek (DS9) knows her character is a complete anathema to the tone of the Section 31 world. There is no place in that shadowy world for basically a bull in a china shop character like Georgiou.
I never liked section 31 as an idea anyway. I don’t care if “a utopia in the future isn’t realistic” to you it’s WHAT Star Trek and earth’s Star Trek is supposed to be. Whether you think it’s possible is irrelevant star trek showed a future that moved beyond the idea of needing shady people to keep the order. Undiscovered country literally calls out the conspiracy of shady types trying to keep the status quo.
The biggest problem with this is that it feels like a pilot rather than a full-fledged movie. I did enjoy the concept of the Fuzz character and his Vulcan robot body. Otherwise it was meh and forgettable.
As a life-longer Trekker, I was concerned about Section 31 since seeing the trailer. The film itself was so much worse than I expected. Terrible cinematography, awful dialogue, bad acting, a complete waste of the characters and setting - it just didn't have anything going for it. Star Trek just needs to double down on Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks and leave behind the Discovery era.
Have you seen Insurrection tho It’s much Just much worse The cast was roasting it for being dull Also why hate on Star Trek: Beyond if you guys are going to be boomers it tried to honor the original series
The reason it was such a terrible movie is the ridiculous production and editing choices, clearly meant to “punch it up.” This is produced and edited in a way that appeals to a teenage audience, and is full of unbelievably tired action movie tropes and budget-joss-whedon style character interaction. If you remove those elements, this could’ve been a good story, especially if you spread it out over an entire miniseries or series. It is really a shame to waste such a great character and such a compelling premise as her working with section 31.
I really liked Section 31. I thought it was character based, with augments, shape shifters, in and out of phase fight scenes, Rachel Garrett, and the fate of the quadrant hanging in the balance, very Star Trek. I liked how the plot focused on the characters. Conversely, I thought the first 10 minutes of exposition was unnecessary. I also think this show is a better fit for the Georgiou character than Disco was, Michelle Yeoh was fantastic. I like that she is an actual martial artist for all the hand-to-hand combat there is in trek.
The name alone concerned me. Her role with Section 31 was NEVER the most interesting thing about Georgio. He relationship to Bernam was, and her position as a Mirror Universe counterpart was. Section 31 is one of the worst things in Star Trek, it contradicts the core aspirations of the show constantly.
yes..an optimistic future, but with challenges....did gene have to write it down? i thought it was clear what it was. i used to dream that one day a work environment could be like the enterprise under picard and people were motivated by professionalism, the pleasure of being respected by colleagues across star systems, where bias and corruption, while not impossible would be so beyond acceptable behavior that it would be exceedingly rare or spawn from extreme circumstances.... how much could we accomplish if we had technology and people who just did their damn jobs 🙂
I don't understand why people like Georgiou as a character. Michelle Yeoh is good but not every actor is for every part and the character is so hammed up it's hard for me to watch.
It just feels like an okay pilot but okay tv show pilots are not great movies. And that’s my problem with it. If this was Episode 1, I’d be thinking “okay, they’ll have time to fix the character inconsistencies, and the actors will jell more.” But as a 90 minute movie? It’s oddly okay. But oddly okays are not signals of good-great films.
I love Star Trek since I was a little kid. I do enjoy the new things as well. Season 3 of Picard and the latest season of Prodigy were great! Strange new worlds, great! Discovery Season 2 fantastic! So I don’t hate new trek by any means. Here’s the thing… this character worked better playing off her adopted Daughter in Michael B. But I have not seen the movie yet so I will reserve judgement until I see it.
I'm literally halfway through and just switched off. It's garbage. It really is. So boring. And I'm a lifelong trek fan since the 80s. But I can't carry on with this.
The vast majority of modern Trek is frankly awful. STD (irony) reached new lows. It’s not surprising that a spin off series from that show, was terrible. Any new Trek fans should immerse themselves in DS9 and then they will realise just how far Star Trek has fallen.
I disagree with no one knows how to write star trek. The ppl that should write it is the ppl that brought Kirk back, they had multiple versions of Kirk, and the tone was there
WAIT A MINUTE! WHO didn't like Star Trek: The Final Frontier?! Isn't that the movie where the Enterprise finds God, and Kirk asks God for his I.D.? I love that movie. I thought we all loved that movie.
Can’t wait for full Burnett’s scathing review of this one

Terrible cinematography, awful dialogue, bad acting, a complete waste of the characters and setting - it just didn't have anything going for it. Star Trek just needs to double down on Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks and leave behind the Discovery era.
Yep, watched it, it's total rubbish. Star Trek it ain't.
Oh my God CBS got a show called Lioness and could have been the basis.
I couldn't care less about Stat Trek, but there is something about someone so passionate about something absolutely destroying it i have to watch.
Prediction for 2026 : Star Trek Section 31 will swip the razzies next year 😅😅😅😅 , oh boy , 😅😅😅😅
Could they have hastened production because of clauses in the new ownership deal of the Trek Franchise?
Hope the next Chris pine is good I enjoyed into darkness 😜😝😊
I was excited if the film
The worst 3 Star Trek films are the JJ-verse ones. It's not even close.
Have you seen Insurrection tho
It’s much
Just much worse
The cast was roasting it for being dull
Also why hate on Star Trek: Beyond if you guys are going to be boomers it tried to honor the original series
This is all turning out just the way I warned people it would go back in 2017.
“We have Star Trek at home, son”
The Star Trek at home…
This is so much worse, this is the Star Trek your sister's gay friend who hates nerds and old shows made to piss you off specifically.
Sounds good until somebody actually has some pliers and are actively pulling your nails out lol
It is really a shame to waste such a great character and such a compelling premise as her working with section 31.
will these reviews end the careers of the writers and director? or show runner? producer? i assume that's how hollywood works....?
Hollywood doesn't work, this movie/pilot is proof of that.
Also, their doing star trek over there at paramount like Lucas films is now doing to Star Wars, its ashame
It's so bad... I think I was able to watch Acolyte longer than I watched this.
Omg this was horrible. I’m 43:00 mins in. I’m gonna force my face to watch the rest.
If it's truly as bad as they say, that means it's worse than Picard S2 - and I will not subject my brain to that kind of trauma again. Hard pass.
And having a genocidal lunatic from the mirror universe WHO ATE PEOPLE running around is fine as long as she has a cool relationship with someone?
We are getting the orville season 4 guys!!!!
yes..an optimistic future, but with challenges....did gene have to write it down? i thought it was clear what it was. i used to dream that one day a work environment could be like the enterprise under picard and people were motivated by professionalism, the pleasure of being respected by colleagues across star systems, where bias and corruption, while not impossible would be so beyond acceptable behavior that it would be exceedingly rare or spawn from extreme circumstances.... how much could we accomplish if we had technology and people who just did their damn jobs 🙂
Kurtzman has no concept of what you just expressed, he thinks it's the one with laser swords.
I don't understand why people like Georgiou as a character. Michelle Yeoh is good but not every actor is for every part and the character is so hammed up it's hard for me to watch.
It was terrible. You would barely even know it was it in Star Trek universe if you didn’t see or know the movie name.
At least it's a movie....so we can forget about it soon after.
I couldn't even finish it
We need Jeri Ryan & the Enterprise back!
I'm literally halfway through and just switched off. It's garbage. It really is. So boring. And I'm a lifelong trek fan since the 80s. But I can't carry on with this.
What Harley Quinn is john talking about cause he said before that r he did nothing like the live Harley Quinn
The vast majority of modern Trek is frankly awful. STD (irony) reached new lows. It’s not surprising that a spin off series from that show, was terrible. Any new Trek fans should immerse themselves in DS9 and then they will realise just how far Star Trek has fallen.
Who made this movie did the worst possible take on Section 31. I'ts almost like a SNL parody
The couple of DS9 episodes featuring Section 31 were way more interesting than this movie. This was Star Trek’s Andor opportunity
RMB's opinion on this 👌
I got 20 minutes into it and had to stop. The Irish vulcan thing with the stage irish accent was the final straw. Horrible. Horrible.
12:18 "My star captain, my star captain"
I disagree with no one knows how to write star trek. The ppl that should write it is the ppl that brought Kirk back, they had multiple versions of Kirk, and the tone was there
WAIT A MINUTE! WHO didn't like Star Trek: The Final Frontier?! Isn't that the movie where the Enterprise finds God, and Kirk asks God for his I.D.? I love that movie. I thought we all loved that movie.
