Seeing you react to Phonte was awesome. I think you’d love going through his discography, from his solo work to little brother and foreign exchange. Such an amazing talent. You’re the man Bob!
This album meant so much to me when it came out. I was in college and just questioning everything including myself and my role in all of this. This album reassured me. Also PLEASE check out Phontes' work! From Little Brother to his solo stuff and The Foreign Exchange. Incredibly underrated lyricist but highly respected among hip-hop heads. Your favorite rappers favorite rapper type shit.
This is my favorite era of The Roots (Game Theory through Undun, this one being just before Undun), and my go-to example of why Black Thought is my GOAT. But this era was also the most collaborative The Roots ever were. The features rap like honorary members of the band; they stick to the theme and honor the sentiment, and it really strengthens the whole record. A masterpiece imo, in a catalog that's already bulletproof.
100% agree with everything. Thought is undisputed GOAT. 'How I got over' is a top 5 all time album for me. 'Game Theory' is a slept on great as well. Nostradamus type work for today.
Im gonna get hate for saying this (maybe deserved) but I think “how I got over”, “things fall apart” and “illadelph halflife” are the most boring roots albums. Don’t get me wrong I still love them but I prefer the experimentation on some of their other albums more. My favorites go “undun”, “Phrenology” and then “game theory”. I feel like this albums dont get mentioned enough when people are talking about the best roots albums and it always goes back to the same ones.
Highly highly highly recommend BELOW THE HEAVENS and *especially* MILES by Blu and Exile (producer). Blu's easily one of the most underrated rappers to ever do it, plus they just announced another joint album slated for this year.
Cheat Codes is one of my favorite albums ever! I can’t wait until you get to that one. DangerMouse makes incredible beats that really give off the feeling that the cover art gives me. And incredible rhymes the whole way through
Blu and Phonte both on this album. You gotta do Blu & Exile - Below The Heavens. Super classic 🔥 Also Little Brother - The Minstrel Show (incredible album) 🔥
You definitely should check out Phonte's work. His solo albums, his group Little Brother and his other group Foreign Exchange (which is more singing than rapping, especially after the first album).
Never clicked on a video so fast. Can't watch much of it now but I'll comment again later. Just wanted to say this is the secret best Roots album. Or maybe Undun.
Phonte is one of the greatest rappers everrrrrr. He’s apart of a hip hop group called little brother (with big pooh and producer 9th wonder). They released an album called “The Minstrel Show” which is a definite classic in hip hop. He always has killer features and yea this album is def no exception.
Please react to Illadelph Halflife and Undun! Half-life is an incredible hip hop album that gives you a glimpse into the Roots vision of Philadelphia. It's my favorite album of theirs. Undun is their best conceptual project imo, it's musically just beautiful and very sad when you understand the story they are telling.
Favourite Roots album. Now that you listened to Blu, could be a chance to add Below the Heavens to the list - always underrated (and underground), but gets only praise from those who've listened to it :)
I admittedly haven't kept up with The Roots in a while, but this particular album meant so so much to me when it came out, and watching Bob react brings back the same feelings I had when first listening to it. Time to revisit it.
The roots catalogue is genuine so under appreciated, please go through there stuff also black thoughts catalogue is insane. Lots of outstanding albums on his stuff too!
I’ve been thru severe depression since losing my mother. Ur appreciation and breakdown of music is like therapy to me. Never consider urself a part of the problem bob.
I recently attended a show they did in Berlin and it was honestly on of the best concert experiences I've had. I think they are doing a tour in America right now, so don't miss it if you got the money and time, they are absolutely kill it live!
A truly great album. As you alluded to, it’s an absolute crime that the album didn’t end with the fire. I hope you have a chance to make a playlist where it ends with The Fire and just listen to it straight through. The transitions between songs make this a mesmerizing album where you start at Peace of Light, sink into the album and all the sudden you’re at the fire, soul feeling cleansed and ready to conquer the world.
you gotta review Endtroducing by DJ Shadow man, it's like the other side of the golden coin of instrumental hip hop with donuts by dilla being on the first side. Endtroducing is a classic, it's epic, captivating, creative, and unique. it has long experimental tracks and tracks that are shorter and hard hitting
When you said you thought you had maybe heard Doin' it again before, I immediately thought of the video of him and Mos Def in a cypher with Em, where he used most of these lyrics as well. Idk which one came first tbh but I remember seeing that video first and being slightly surprised as well when I was listening to this song for the first time.
Probably their most underrated album IMO, its in the top 3 of their discog if you ask me. Highly recommend Cheat codes next if you want more Black Thought!
I had the pleasure of seeing them at the Kennedy Center in DC, as well as them MCing the Roots Picnic where Usher headlined. They were Usher's band and turned all his songs into 70's style soul/funk renditions

Hey Bob, just went to a Peggy show last night in Eugene and it was crazy good! Me and my friend waited for about an hour and a half with like 10 other people and got to meet JPEG after the show. He’s a super nice dude and took his time with everyone signing stuff and taking pictures and chatting. Just wanted to let you know cause I know you’re going to a show soon!
