Me and my dad have been kicking ass at this game and we’ve been playing it every night for the past 2 weeks, not the arcade version but the one on the Nintendo. Getting an extra man on this game is like a blessing to us, that saves us from getting game overs earlier. Last night, we went all the way up to Phase 26 on this game. I hear on the arcade one, you can only go as far as Phase 22.
This game brings back so many great memories of me and my brother when we were little. We would line our quarters up on the screen of the arcade console and play this game for hours. RIP to my brother Paul.

I’ve never gotten past level 15 or 16 in this game. The fireballs always get in my way & I never felt they were necessary lol. Also the game always re-spawns me right on top of an enemy... 😫
If you got it on the Wii U, pretty sure that was the NES version, which is very dumbed down and missing a lot from the arcade version, including lower lives.
I don't understand this game. I just got it this week. When I touch anything it kills Mario. Your game is walking right through the fireballs that kill me, and the crabs kill me, anything that I have not bumped from underneath kills me if I try to jump over and touch the fireflies or anything. How do you make it where every damn thing kills me? ☹️
Uh, no offense but you're just not playing the game right if that's shocking you. Stomping on enemies wasn't a thing yet, that was introduced in Super Mario Bros. Stunning enemies by hitting the platform below them and then kicking them while they are stunned was the only way to defeat them, touching them in any other way besides bumping them from underneath like jumping on them would kill you because again, stomping on enemies wasn't created yet.
I think that the original “Super Mario Bros” was supposed to be a sequel to this. I’ve also always viewed Super Mario Bros as a sequel to this game. In my imagination, Mario and Luigi are middle-aged Italian-Americans from Brooklyn (a detail that was and always has been explicitly confirmed canon about this game, not just an invention of the dic cartoons or the 1993 film). I imagine them as being jack-of-all-trades workmen who have been earning their living for the last 15 years of their lives doing different ventures or odd jobs at different periods (hence Mario’s time doing carpentry) and have gone into plumbing before the events of this game. They discover the koopas in the sewers in this game, and then warp through the pipes into the world of the mushroom kingdom offscreen in between this game and SMB. I’m honestly annoyed that they’ve retconned it into Mario and Luigi being from the “mushroom world” all along and never having been from Earth (as well as somehow being in their 20’s instead of being middle-aged). You could compare it to Miyamoto’s retcon about the koopalings “not being bowser’s kids.” The thing is, I honestly theorize that Miyamoto was just trolling about the Koopalings (like how he answered “me” when asked whom bowser jr’s mother was in a later interview). On the other hand, the retconning of the Mario bros’ origins seems to be a genuinely concerted effort, dating back arguably to Super Mario World in 1990.

I don't mind the cheating. It lets one see far into a game... and saves time for an uploader who has MANY games to go through. However... is it just me, or is the audio on this REALLY unfaithfully reproduced? Sounds terrible, not as i remember it at all. And i played this a LOT back in the day.
Also, i don't think the person playing this has ever played this game before. They don't appear to know you can kill fireballs or pick up coins by hitting them from underneath. That used to be one of my great things to do in this, killing the fireballs.
For the sound, are you thinking of the NES version (which has been seen and played WAY more than the arcade version because it's like the only version that got released anywhere from the NES onward), because that version sounds completely different and much nicer. Granted I never played this in the arcades back in the day, but from everything I've seen this is what the arcade version of the game sounds like.

If you look close enough you can see Chris Pratt stomping koopas.
I've always loved the look of the coins in this game. Something about the way they're drawn and animated that almost makes them look realistic.
