Hullloo!!! So lately on Ye Olde Internet, I've been seeing a lot of people making bookshelf inserts (or as I learned they are called, "Book Nooks"), so I wanted to make my own! I decided to do a lil' abandoned temple design and tried to use materials I already had! It was a ton of fun and I frickin' love making anything miniature, hahaha. If you try this out make sure you show me!

Craft Foam Sheets
Flappy box thingy from Michael's
Thicker EVA Foam (8mm or 10mm) (I get mine from tntcosplaysupp...)
Acrylic Paints

Rachel Maksy maybe you could try looking for those tiny fake tea light candles! I bet you could dismantle the candle part and take out the little light.

The photo you showed of the temple covered in "fallen branches" is actually a very famous temple in Cambodia where trees grew on the stones. So these are not branches, they are huge roots of century old trees. Just thought I'd add this cool info here

I totally stand behind Native. I am in welding school, my classes are in an open air metal building, and I HAVE to wear heavy clothes and a leather protection jacket even when its 98% humidity and 85 degrees outside. This stuff works.

ever since I found your videos they have been such a great form of escapism for me. I can watch you joyfully make an outfit or a craft and forget for a second that the world is a dumpster fire
I've decided. When my littles do have to make dioramas for school, we will do the box in this format so when it comes back home, we can put it on the bookshelf instead of it getting thrown away or destroyed in their rooms. Hell Yeah! Wish I had thought of this with my older boys that are already out of school.

Love the use of foam for the texture and bricks, so much lighter (and cheaper!) than if you'd bought, like, the texture and bricks etc they sell for model railroad diorama making.

A fun thing to do to add a little more mystery to your temple could be adding a small light coming from the door like those dollar store tea lights, though I suppose those would be a little too big for the gap.
I definitely want to add a light of some sort!
There are remote controlled LED lights that come in different sizes and can change colors!

Mum chiming in: when you're a mum, it gets WORSE. Then, if you want any type of child-item, it is not only very gendered (yes, even boxes!), but it has gendered words on it. BOO-URNS.

I've seen kids (on TH-cam) themselves ranting about gendered things. It's usually girls, btw, because they sort of want the inspirational "you can do" sort of words on boys' clothing, but apparently girls' clothes only have words like "pretty".
There's a company that makes airplane and truck dresses for girls. Because some girls don't want a 'princess-y' dress.
OTOH, when Target de-gendered their toy section, one mom mentioned that her kids would 'sneak' into the other section. Apparently it's great fun to 'help' your kids sneak into the opposite section. LOL.
YES on the mum part (the things shops can gender! Boxes, kiddie cameras, cutlery... *cutlery* for goodness' sake!). Also just sending you a little high five since I also say "Boo-urns" :D
My 5 year old niece loves anything mechanical, and outer space. Let me tell you, when she found out about rockets, HER TINY MIND EXPLODED. Now she wants to be an astronaut. Or an elephant keeper because elephants are the best. Apparently.

You could also point out that people design and build those rockets. Not everyone has the physical whatever-it-takes to be an astronaut. There's lots of ways she could get in at NASA.
Great build. If you want to add lights to it, you can buy orange or yellow flickering LEDs. You could use them to make torches in wall sconces or hide a couple behind the arch to suggest flaming torches inside. They can be powered by the 3v button cell batteries or a couple of AA or AAA cells in series. I'd also get some 1ohm resistors to limit the current to the LED and make them last a bit longer.
To connect them up, you can use any thin wire and if you don't want to solder, twist the wires together and secure with hot glue.
The circuit is [battery]+ -------[resistor]--------[LED]--------[switch]------ -[battery]. The long leg on the LED is connected to the + / positive side of the battery.

I play ALOT of table top rpgs and craft a TON of "scenes" for our gaming table. Temples, caves, city streets etc. I was so giddy to see you make this - reminds me of the day I saw a terrain build on youtube of an abandoned mine and IMMEDIATELY ran to the nearest dollar tree for hot glue, craft foam, and popsicle sticks!
Also, if ever you're lacking in flocking. Wood shavings (even from a sharpened pencil) are a nice alternative. For texture I use aluminum and a tiny wire brush.
Overall it looks AMAZING!!
