    After following religiously the guide on the machine cover without success, i.e. too slow wire speed and low gas flow recommendations leading to disastrous results and without any help from the dealership I was contemplating pitching the entire setup and investing in a TIG. Your videos have taught me to make acceptable welds and have saved me the additional $$$, something the dealer was entirely clueless to. Thanks, Andy

    So I applied at a fabrication welding shop, I'm not a journeyman but have a few years welding experience. They asked me to do a steel MIG and aluminum mig test. I've never welded aluminum before that wasn't tig.
    I always push my welds, never pull so I got lucky.
    $32 an hour to start!
    Thanks for the tips!

    Nice to see your glasses, they really do suit you.
    More seriously, on another site it was said that when TIG welding aluminum, you need one second post flow for every amp. So 5 seconds with 50 amps, 10 seconds with 100 amps, and 20 seconds for 200 amps. All so the tungsten could cool down, nothing really to do with the weld. In almost 50 years of welding I’ve never heard of that one.

    Greate VIDEO and good view to specific trouble of Al welding!
    On the video you quate clear discribed good idea to increase gas sheald during welding ... and you have achived the requared result partly.
    As I see additional measures could increase weld cleanliness - on the picture oxide paticles coming from filler wire to the welding paddle
    I have one question -
    What do You know about chemical treatment of aluminium filler wire?

    The series of Aluminum MIG wire also makes a difference in your bead profile. When your dealing with aluminum take the time to clean it properly, get your travel speed correct, and that your parameters are in good condition to get that nice penetration all throughout your weld. Aluminum is not a forgiving metal.

    Hi!, im a diesel mechanic and I weld bumpers made out of aluminum. I see previous welds that have broken right down the middle of said weld what would cause this??. I know aluminum has to be clean as possible and I always try to "V" and bevel for best possible penetration, I believe this provides a better weld. You can see it fill in the crack as opposed to just sitting on top of the two pieces that are butted together.

    • @galwhite75
      @galwhite75 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Undersized welds, concave bead profile, lack of fusion to the root, cold starts, crater cracks, using a filler metal with too low of strength for the fillet size, the vibration of the bumper causing a fatigue failure (use a filler metal with better toughness like 5356 if its compatible with the base metal). Those are a few possibilities 😀

      @@Welddotcom an etch would be nice to see. I'm going to assume that if the quality is there and it's good enough to pass testing, ie bend, etch, no porosity, etc that the appearance accompanying it should be what were striving to achieve. as somebody that used to weld a shitton of alu-mig, you dont need a spoolgun or a push-pull gun, as long as you have a lead shorter then 2m(6ft.), use a aluminum liner in the lead and adjust the "clamping" in the wirefeeder correctly you will have no problems. Why oh why does it seem like whenever i see americans weld alu-mig they always say that you "have to have a spoolgun or a push-pull"?

    • @Welddotcom
      @Welddotcom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We never said you have to use a spool gun or a push pull.

    • @mattis537
      @mattis537 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Welddotcom no, just a general comment. I have used spoolguns in the past and i personaly dont see a reason to. Its heavy and cumbersome to use. And you have to change the wire more often. just a comment on your use of the spoolgun.

    • @jasonbecker3362
      @jasonbecker3362 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mattis Vik you’re right, it can be done, however most of the aluminum mig work I’ve done is on parts larger than 6ft and a lot of it has been in the field. It’s easier to carry the spool gun around the shop than to drag the machine every 6 ft.

    • @mattis537
      @mattis537 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jasonbecker3362 for me, i just bring the feeder with me when moving location, if you are doing large jobs then you generaly are better of with a seperate power and feeder unit. if all you have is say a 210amp small machine and you have to make lots of smaller welds lots of different places then i get it kinda. But the difference in time is so small compared to everything else one has to do, just dont think its worth it using a spoolgun.

      If you decide to use a standard gun, look into a Teflon liner.

      @@Welddotcom Holy crap you guys are amazing. I took enough welding in college to know that this is the wrong way to do it - especially for anything that looks like production - but those kind of tips for those of us trying to make one off parts are why I keep watching. Ya'll are great and looks like my Hobart 210mvp needs a minor upgrade. NOW I just need to find enough alum/stainless parts to make for this car to 'justify' a TIG machine..
