Today my friend Tom joins me at the BackUp Gun (BUG) Match for a bunch of James Bond guns. We tried a new match division this month called Wildcard, where you use a different division of gun (Revolver, Hideout, Backup, and Big 5) in each stage. Tom and I realized that between literary and cinematic Bond we can cover 4 really cool Bond pistol this way - a (faux) Fitz Special, Beretta 418, PPK/S, and ASP. Should be fun! Let's see how we can handle each of them in turn...

Count me in 😀
Hi Ian, loved the video, love the product but shipping to the UK doubles the cost, so: sorry 🤠☹
Ian would be agent 007.65 Longue
👍👍😂😂😂😂
AWESOME!!
Gun Jesus would be 003 (for the Trinity) - Browning, Colt, and Kalashnikov.
Or 007.5x54.
Or 00MR73...
Lol, how iconic for the Beretta, it jammed on you and nearly got you killed! That's why you're getting issued the Walther.
On a pedantic level, the Beretta's suppressor got caught in Bond's trousers - it didn't actually jam. I've always wondered if Fleming wrote it that way because he didn't want to cast aspersions on the reliability of Berettas.
@@AshleyPomeroy Should've just written that it was considered underpowered at that point and that the service didn't want to risk someone not getting properly stopped by a dinky .25ACP.
@@AshleyPomeroy Ironically, nobody makes .25 cans. I asked one manufacturer why not, or if I could just run a drill through a .22 can. He told me .25's suck for suppressing, don't even bother.
@@billstevens5277 That doesn't sound right functionally though, though even if that's what they said - the vast majority of 25 acp are VERY safely under the supersonic threshold of 1100 fps. Not only are they not supersonic, they're also below trans sonic, which is down to about 900 fps - and most won't ever even reach this speed. IDK if that matters for suppressor designs in of themselves, but I imagine that would be better than something transsonic.
@@billstevens5277I’d think that someone with the sort of connections that produce the finest gadgets/plot devices such as an Aston Martin with tire shredders, pop-out machine guns, armor, and passenger side ejection seats can produce a silencer for a .25 ACP pocket pistol.
To not open the video with "Thanks for tuning into another episode of Forgotten Weapons, I'm McCollum, Ian McCollum" was a real missed opportunity
I’m glad they didn’t.
@@profile2047agreed - what an incredibly dumb suggestion.
Bond did use a revolver in Live & Let Die. An 8 inch nickel plated Mod 29 .44 Magnum.
His normal shooter was the PPK, so the .44 was clearly his BUG.
Didn't Bond also use a Ruger Super Redhawk in 44 Magnum?
@@dennisshank2715and Super Blackhawk! Gardner’s selections as full size guns. Also covered in the book!
Abbabo!
Webley .445. Bond, in an early novel, carried his old service pistol, in the glove compartment, and/or under the driver’s seat of his car. I don’t recall which Mark; but he refers to it as a man-stopper - a Mark VI perhaps?
@@MrPercy112 actually it was a Colt .45, and we spend a healthy bit of time in the book talking about the variety of models it could be!
I cant imagine how hot it must be in arizona in a 3 piece suit. The commitment to the bit is amazing.
"That's a Walther PPK-S, Professor McCollum and you've had your 7."
Nice!!!! :)
Oh you mean, "... now come my 80"?
In the John Gardner novels, Bond used the ASP 9mm with Glazer Safety Slugs, which were purported to have twice the stopping power of a conventional hollowpoint. The originals were number 12 shot of tungsten floating in liquid Teflon with a nose cap of glass and plastic. They were supposed to remain intact going through something with singular density like a car door, but would break up upon hitting something with composite density like human tissue. The reality was that because the tungsten shot were floating, they affected spin stabilization and resulted in atrocious accuracy. They were also super high priced, I always felt like yelling, "Don't move, I can't afford to shoot twice!"
The marketing of the ASP and Glaser combination was incredible too. “The Power of .44 Magnum, with the Recoil of a .22” and all that. Mythical stuff. Addressed heavily in the book!
If I'm not mistaken Bond also had a Ruger Redhawk in a hidden compartment in the SAAB in the Gardner novels
Back in the early 2000s my friends dad had some. I clearly remember the box and the story associated with them. He explained they basically exploded inside your target. The reason they are "safety slugs" is because if you hit something like a wall or a window they do NOT penetrate right through but instead "explode" on contact so that anyone on the other side of that barrier doesn't mistakenly get hit. It was like the ultimate home defense round because you don't have to worry about hitting a family member on the other side of the wall. I believe they were even marketed to law enforcement under the thought that if you have to put a bad guy down, the bullet will not pass through his body and harm good citizens.
This was 25 years ago I was told all this, as a kid, by my friends dad who liked to sensationalize things but it honestly makes sense. They are safety slugs because they dump all their energy on first contact.
@@robertborgeson1821 I seem to remember hearing they were originally designed for air marshals. For all of the above stated reasons.
Let me get this straight, have you been talking to targets?
And just like what happened in Dr. No, the Beretta jammed on Bond that put him out for 6 weeks! lmao! love this!
Hmmm . . . you might want to check that. IIRC Dr No opened with Bond retiring his Berretta, and given the Walther for EDC and the Smith & Wesson for when he needed something a little heavier. And it was the S&W he took with him to Crab Key.
@@fruitbat4429 you be maybe right as it has been a LONG time since I've watched Dr. No XD
@@fruitbat4429 Bond didn't retire the Beretta, M took it from him so he wouldn't keep using it over the Walther and S&W he was given to evaluate.
And just to clarify: I was thinking of the novel.
Mentioned by M, not shown on screen.
Comment about Bond use of Walthers. Yes he sometimes used a PPK, but I'm fairly sure he used his "PP" in every single film, often more than once. 😏🤣
I wonder if it ever jammed? Or if the safety failed?
@@pistonburner6448 It is only the US made ones that have those problems. 😁
Hopefully he wasn't shooting blanks.
It was only assumed he did.
Very slow to reload though...
Ian’s face when Tom tops up the Walther is funny 😃👍
For 9mm I would've expected the Brosnan-era P99, but the ASP is always a welcome surprise - provided you're not one of the bad guys!
I think its because it is a BUG match.
@@danilonakazone386 Is the full-size P99 too big for BUG? I haven't exactly done competition shooting.
@@HellbirdIV A P99 is definitely more of a service pistol, wouldn’t really be in the same class as the rest of these.
The Walther P99 is a service pistol, though a very compact one, so it's not really fair to the other pistols since it's not compromised like you would expect from a BUG match. There's the subcompact P99 AS, but Bond doesn't use one of those.
3:44
Yes, I thought so. This damn Beretta again. I've told you about this before. It jammed on your last job and you spent six months in hospital. A double-0 number means you're licensed to kill, not get killed.
100% The Rock was the last Bond outing by Connery.
They could't say it out loud without getting sued, yes. 😉😉
Mind blows 😮 it suddenly all makes sense 👍
@@jamiemcdevitt2470 😁
Likewise one of the best James Bond movies (True Lies) starred Arnold;).
I'd also say that his last actual performance as Bond, from EA's 2005 From Russia with Love game on the PS2/Xbox/GameCube, was quite good too!
Ian is kinda Bond style, second guy is more like his CIA friend... ;-)
Felix Leiter! I wonder if the books ever specified which guns he used?
@@pistonburner6448 I'm not sooooo deep in this, but it seems to me that Felix Leiter is 1911 type of guy....
@@AlleyCat11 most definitely.
CIA guys aren't subtle.
Wade?
That’s because Ian‘s suit fits properly ;)
The dark suits, in that heat? Bond would be wearing a white safari jacket with matching flannel pants, plus a straw boater. Perhaps a glass of Pimms in the non shooting hand...
Connery Bond would be wearing shorts
If your acclimated and the suit is of good quality tropical worsened wool it's alittle sweaty but not as bad as you would think. But yeah definitely uncomfortable in the sun and heat at anything more than a walking pace of activity.
Missing in this video (understandably besides the golden gun) are the TT33 Tokarev and the Ruger Blackhawk
Anyone reading this comment who understands why is a man of culture
We have a stretch goal for the book to cover these... ;)
Ah the DD44, 8 rounds as fast as you can pull the trigger.
My man!
Was not expecting that reference lol
But where is he going to get an 80 round P90? 😋
Yes, it’s not really a backup gun but it is one of, if not the first, earliest times a P90 appeared in video games.
So many jams with those pistols,it’s a miracle, that bond survived.
Stage one is the Worst opportunity lost I've seen, since that time I told my date I couldn't come inside to watch TV (at 11:30 PM) because I was going hunting in the morning. Only to suddenly realize what "watch TV" meant while I was being rained on in a duck blind the next day.
Instead of a mug it should have been a martini glass with an olive, and you lose points if you lose the olive out of the glass during the shoot.
🤣
Pretty sure Bond drank vodka martinis with a trist of lemon. Shaken, not stirred, of course.
@@michellehoel389 Well yes mostly , although it had an olive in die another day and I think at least one other. But the olive seems more fun to try to keep in the glass.
Agent 3.14 looks more like Agent Smith from matrix than bond. Matrix themed bug match?
Illuminati
BUGs. Lots of BUGs.
Fun little shoot. Would have liked to see a P99
Maybe next time
Next weekend ;)
@@ForgottenWeapons I just acquired the final edition can't wait to try it out.
I keep thinking of when the PPK turns into a suppressed FN M1910 of all things in Dr No
I laugh every time. And the can that screws into the pistol.
“You’ve had your 8 now have my 80” from a drum fed something would probably get you banned from the match but would be worth it.
I mean, the P90 *is* technically supposed to be a backup gun for rear echelon guys, the problem is getting a Nintendo 64 accurate 80 round magazine...
@@yocapo32 He uses a P90 briefly in The World Is Not Enough. Not as cool as the RCP90 though, Brruuubom.
Great video. I get more of a Penn and Teller vibe than Conner and Moore.
Hairstyles interchanged 😂
This damn beretta again, I’ve told you about this before
Terrible choice bond.
Not gonna lie... that navy blue number with matching waistcoat looks damn good on Ian...
Give him a matching fedora and he'll be pulling tail at the club all night long.
Tim needs to see a tailor... his jacket doesn't flatter him.
Yes, it's Saville Row versus off the peg. As Bond says in Casino Royale - "It's fitted!"; to which Vesper retorts "I sized you up the moment we met".
I have a Beretta 418. The way it feels in the hand is pleasantly solid. I'm in the process of restoring it after inheriting it from my father.
All firearms aside, Ian looks as smart in a suit as he does in a smoking jacket, as he does in olive drab. With a haircut and a shave, he'd be in ideal spy: fitting perfectly into a crowd, unnoticed, and with Q Branch going to HIM for toys!
Suits in the Arizona heat. Braver men than I
Our teaser trailer was quite the adventure in that as well. 😂
I’m so used to watching Ian shoot that when I watch someone shooting right-handed, it looks weird?
Yep, I had an instant reaction of "he's using the 'wrong' hand" before I realized I've been watching Ian for too long hahaha
That demonstration perfectly illustrates the key difference between action flicks and real life: In real life, weapons do not have infinite ammo capacity.
When Tom said ‘I am 003.14’ Ian should have said ‘ok well I am 003.142’. 👍
Never thought I could comment with a maths joke on Forgotten Weapons lol 😃
In the book Casino Royal the first gun mentioned was Bond's .38 S&W chambered Colt Police Positive with a 'sawn barrel'.
I always imagined it as a Fitz special(ed) weapon, so great choice.
It’s likely Fleming (later) did as well! A letter to G. Boothroyd (Bond’s armorer) from Fleming implies that he discovered the 2/3rds trigger guard because of Boothroyd, who sent Fleming photos of his own modified revolver. Fleming said that Bond would certainly adopt such a modification.
What! no Walther LP53 air pistol? The most iconic gun from the Connery posters
That was hilarious, if you knew. The stopping power of a...gnat (an angry one).
@@TheCatBilbo blame the photographer for the gaff, sorry, iconic image,😉
I inherited one from my father in law. I could safely shoot it in my living room into a cardboard box because it didn't get through the other side.
@@goetzliedtke but cool to have because Bond had one, or at the keast was photographed with one. The only armour it would penetrate was the cellophane wrapper that it came in.🤣
We need the next iteration of this series…!!!
Include the villains and THEIR weapons! Maybe an annual themed event?
Only rule… suit style has to match the period!

I own a PPK/s and a Sig P230. The Interarms Walther is not reliable enough for carry and I think the P230 is probably the culmination of this fixed barrel, blowback design, but I keep the Walther because it's cool.
Loved my P230👍🏼
Was fully expecting the P99 so the ASP was a nice surprise
I was pleasently surprised to see the ASP. I had a S&W 469 which was the double stacked version of it. I was looking into getting a Guttersnipe for it until I actually shot one. I decided that spending the money on range time and ammo to get better at instinct shooting was a better investment.
This was great! I did think they were going to set a Walther P99 or P99C to the left of the ASP @10:00 although, why they didn't is probably classified 🤫Thanks, Ian and 003.14!
As a retired LEO I carried a Glock 21 for my whole career, but I was never a huge fan of them overall. I really like the Russian alternative to the PPK, in my case, I've carried an East German Makarov for a long time and the damn thing is just a great shooting gun. I carry a Smith & Wesson Chief's Special more than anything else and I have carried a stock Smith & Wesson Model 39 before which is what the ASP is based on, but I own and carry a Smith & Wesson Model 6904 when I want something larger, which has the same 3 1/2" barrel length that the ASP had and is only slightly thicker than the Model 39 and has much better sights then the guttersnipe configuration of the ASP.
I like the CZ 82 vice the Makarov
Definitely brings out the cool factor of Bond's arsenal.
The ASP has no front sight (Gutter Trough only) if you're slightly off, you're going to be way off. It's meant for concealment, and very CQB, inside 15 feet mostly. Its tolerances are also so loose that it will feed spent brass without hicups, so don't expect match grade accuracy from it. Though being based on a S&W 39 it should cycle better than one might expect, mechanically speaking.
Continuation novels. I nay need to reread "IceBreaker"
And, they could have used the H&K P7 in this novel instead of the ASP.
Hello, we are out on the range so please excuse the shooting in the background.
A suit and tie makes the course much more believable. I'm required a coat and tie for my daily wear and appreciate seeing persons running a range the way I would do it made the video more fun.
Ah....the ASP with 'Guttersnipe' sight! Haven't seen one of those for a long time.
I wanted an ASP and a Saab 900 Turbo for years because of the Gardener books! I was glad to see it in action.
I can't have the gun, being in the UK. I did, however, drive my Dad's Saab 900i hatchback (the original before GM messed Saabs up). Not a turbo sadly.
Ice white, beautifully poised & stable - I loved driving it. The cockpit showed Saab's fighter design roots. It was different & special.
The man with the french rifle
The ASP slithers out of your hand.
The arms of Ian's suit jacket are fascinating to me. You can see in the ASP shoot how there's like a mesh insert at the shoulder, to allow his arms to extend out fully, I guess.
Yes, it's a feature that Grayman & Co does to allow full range of motion. I really like it.
@@ForgottenWeapons thank you!
Early gang shaken not stirred
That was cool, and it was fun.
Sean Connery was the best James Bond.
For sure!
Pierce Bronson in Golden Eye matched Connery's performance. Both incredibly cool
Agreed, but George Lazenby was underrated. Also had my favorite Bond car Aston DBS and Bond Girl Diana Rigg.

From Russia with Love is my fav Bond film. Best train fight scene, and probably the most realistic storyline in terms of villains and mission.
The romanticism of traveling the Orient Express to escape the Russians & Spectre is just great.
02:00 - there's a kind of Fitz Special on the cover of the first editions of From Russia with Love, or at the very least it has the cut-down trigger guard.

A Bond themed BUG match? *I musht be dreaming*
Jethro Bodine: I'm double O 14. Because I'm twice as smart as double O 7.
In the Gardner books Bond used an HK P7. That would have been a good choice to use also.
Only in one of them, unfortunately.
I'm reading Dr. No right now and Bond actually gets both the PPK and a snub nosed revolver, the latter being for "long range." He chooses to bring the revolver to Dr. No's island over the PPK because of that. There are also several scenes that has Bond reflecting on the Beretta not unlike how he reflects on the women in his life. Really shows that he's married to his work at the end of the day.
Sigh, someone's got to do it; Queen & Country, eh - James?
Daniel Craig to Vesper, "You're not my type"
"Smart?"
"No, single"...
The producers of the Bond films should invite Ian to do a cameo in Q's workshop. (Or to play Q.) 😂
I really the ppk/s. It is comfortable to carry and it is actually more accurate than my 1911. I have also only had a few failures to fire with low quality ammo.
I’ll wager Ian was the first person to run the match in a three piece suit. Tom had a more MIB vibe.
Tbh I would vote for Beretta as secondary gun and whatever local police is using with extra barrel thread as primary.
Though really like idea of Special(MR73 existed for a reason so pistols were unreliable for this work for quite long), but idk if revolver can fit for concealed carry as good as a compact pistol.
Starting as a non-gun owner. . .
I needed a pistol for home defense. Knowing little but understanding much, I looked for a “quality” item I could afford. Unknowingly I bought an Argentine derivative of the Walther PPK (Berra 380). Hello, Bond.(Most films)
Moved to a more rural area, where I had trouble with a local dog pack. I started caring when they tried pushing through my window screens to get at my cat. Solution? Henry AR-7. Hello, Bond. (From Russia with Love)
Now, again, my finances and budget have changed. I expect any of them would be appropriate in a Bond film. Here are some thoughts:
Varmits: Stoeger S400-E. A pellet gun with a built-in suppressor.
Car: Lightweight aluminum frame revolver, such as the Taurus 856. Short barrel for handling and retention in tight spaces - and who likes dodging hot brass?
Really want a semi-auto? Seems most of the “cool” ones (H&K P7, Luger, etc.) are out of production. Maybe a Citadel 1911 clone in bright colors and a 380 or 9MM caliber. (Bet they would do one in British Flag design, just for James).
Home Defense: Kel-Tec KSG shotgun. Space-race ready bullpup with two tubular magazines, for quick ammo selection. Available in executive grey, to go with your nice suit.
Rifle: IWI Tavor, a bullpup design that gives you full AR performance in a compact package. Maintenance couldn’t be easier.
I like the blue suit with a vest. Goes very well with the hair. Reminds me of a sheriff from a western.
The Walther P99 is my favorite 007 gun! I always thought it looked so cool when it was first showed on screen in Tomorrow Never Dies! Also I remember first seeing the Smith & Wesson ASP on Call Of Duty: Black Ops!
Never saw James Bond use a revolver. Hmmmm
"Live in Let Die." Has a S&W model 29.
Lot of love for wheel guns in the novels, with a hyper modified S&W even appearing on the cover art of From Russia With Love! The first gun ever referenced in a Fleming novel, at the end of chapter 1 of Casino Royale, is a sawn barrel Colt Police Positive! All of this and more in the book! 📖
James used a Savage 300 breakdown model to assassinate a spy.
In reality agents on both sides of the wall often favored pre-war Polish Radoms , Boothroyd was of the ( wrong) opinion that the Beretta was more of a ladies' purse gun.
Sad there was no, "welcome to forgotten weapons, I am McCollum, Ian McCollum ..." 😁
I seem to remember a Magnum appearing in one of the "continuation" novels. About the time that Roger Moore was appearing in the movies so there might have been a knee jerk reaction to that .
Bond had a .44 Magnum in Live & Let Die. He shot Baron Samedi with it.
I have a vague memory of a Ruger Redhawk 44 concealed on the dashboard of his car, a SAAB Turbo - from a continuation novel.
Looks like Ian split the seam of his suit on his right shoulder. Q would be upset…😊
That's intentional, and elasticized. Lets me have full range of movement with a properly-fitted jacket.

Gun Jesus, being also left-handed, I might suggest putting the loose rounds in the right hand suit pocket.
I unironically hit more with my short barrel PPK than a Glock. I hate those triggers.
I believe Bond's PPK was 7.65mm. His suits were tailored to allow for the shoulder holster. Dark blue 2 piece suit, with short sleeve Sea Island cotton shirt and black knitted silk tie.
Who is the American "James Bond?" My vote is for Donald Hamilton's Matt Helm. Pistol selection is a bit different. Helm carried a .22 Pre-WW2 Colt Woodsman during WW2. When he went back to work he carried a .38 Special S&W Model 38 (Shrouded hammer model) There were other guns acquired or used as cover. The rifles were really Helm's best work. The only other carry guns I recall was a S&W Model 19 snub nose impersonating a courier. Geoff Who notes Casino Royal Copyright 1953 and Death of a Citizen Copyright 1960.
Ian’s shooting companions are the Bond Girls of the GunTube Universe
Dad carried a S&W 39-2 for 30+ years in law enforcement, and I have somewhere around here the original ASP brochure he requested to have his 39 converted but never sent it off to them.
Firing a gutter snipe sight, I find they shoot high and you have to force yourself to point down or just hold low on target. Flash sight the belly button and they hit center mass at 12 to 15 yards. I bought him a 3914NL when they came out and it basically gave him the ASP with standard sights.
Acythe ASP is a real offering. It was a custom SMITH model 39 cut down. S&W then started making the 6906 and 3906 etc. which were the same gun.
This is some of the geekiest geeking-out I've seen in a while, in the guntube space, and it's fantastic.
"Possibly nothing in the shoots neither" with the driest delivery lmao
The ASP was a great pistol for the era, when full-power concealable options were limited, but we have much more affordable, concealable and reliable options today.
Now you need to find an AR 7 chambered in .25 ACP;).
Now wouldn’t that be a magic trick!
personally id love to see more of suit ian. very dapper, very suave. rating: 12/10
This looks like the funnest BUG match ever

Funnily enough while the ASP may not be that well known to a whole segment of Bond fans due to primarily being only in the novels, me and several others know about this gun entirely because of Black Ops 1
And funnier still is how Activision used to own the rights to Bond games
Tom's tie is seriously snazzy
I like how in that first shoot off they start the firefight but don't bother to drop their coffee cup to get a proper iso grip on the revolver!
Agent 009mm with a Beretta M9, Agent 00Buck with a shotgun, and Agent 00.308 as the sniper. Agent 0044Magnumthemostpowerfulhandgunintheworld is just straight up Dirty Harry.

Because you give us the answer to guns, ammo, and everything.
In some of the John Gardner novels, Bond kept, and occasionally used, a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum.
"The ASP...don't know what was wrong with us shooting it."
I also don't know (of course) but I am guessing the guttersnipe.
Really fun that the Beretta jammed for both of you when that's the exact reason given it gets replaced in the books.
Jammed in the movie, snagged in the waistband in the novel, but I completely agree, the jamming is the much better story!
