Adam Savage's One Day Builds: 2001 Spacesuit Helmet Repair!

  • Even years after Adam has "completed" a cosplay or worn it at a convention, he from time to time returns to his costumes to further upgrade or refurbish them with new materials or updated reference. That's the case with the helmet for his 2001: A Space Odyssey spacesuit, which needs a new sewn lining to better match how the originals were made. It's time to take apart this unique helmet and make it more screen accurate, in a build that also gives Adam a break from his current costume project!

I saw one of these helmets at the Kubrick exhibit that was at the Jewish museum in SF several years ago. It was displayed next an ape head prosthetic from the beginning of 2001. The ape head looked like it would fit in the helmet despite the protruding jaws. I’m guessing that’s intentional and that it’s a parallel statement to the thrown bone weapon turning into the orbital weapons platform. It’s the same statement: we’re still apes.

    2001: A Space Odyssey EXPLANTION ; Randy M. Zeitman
2001: A Space Odyssey is my favorite film. In fact it was a life-changing film for me as, at age 9 when I saw it in the theatre, definitely propelled me toward a particular kind of introspective thinking which I later found out was called Existentialism. (And even later found that Kubrick considered himself a ‘pragmatic existentialist’ which is probably why I'm so drawn to his films as they are pretty much each a chapter inquiring into 'the fallout of existence'.
So after seeing 2001 for about the 20-nth time (on VHS I guess) I finally had my "ah-ha!" moment about the film and then most of the big pieces seemed to fall (at least to my satisfaction) into place.
2001 is a triple-allegory: The Sentinel; Thus Spoke Zarathustra (Nietzsche, existential classic) and The Odyssey (Homer, another existential classic).
((Having only read essays summarizing Thus Spoke and The Odyssey it's fair to assume there may be elements of both presented in 2001 that I don't account for. Perhaps those reading the essay can help to expand it and certainly I would give acknowledgement to those who contribute.))
Kubrick rabidly uses sexual symbolism...the man's rifle in Full Metal Jacket, the walking cane in A Clockwork Orange, and the Peter Seller's uncontrollable 'erect-arm-penis' as Dr. Strangelove.
And that's the same role the human arms play in 2001. When the monolith appears man is compelled to reach to it (which kinda gives away what the monolith is, right?)
But lets continue with the ape tossing his tool (pun intended).
In space the shuttle docks (sex) with the space station. The entrance to the space station is rectangular (allusion to monolith.). The Blue Danube is a waltz...a mating dance.
The stewardess, when she walks in the tube, then upside down, every time I've seen the movie with a women I ask them what that looks like and they say "Well *I* know what it looks like!" (...hint...Georgia O'Keefe.).
Dr. Floyd and company travel to Clavius where the monolith is uncovered (trojan horse in the Odyssey portion of this triple allegory).
Nothing happens till one of them reaches to touch it...the monolith 'screams' with the radio signal to Jupiter... orgasm as well as the siren song from The Odyssey.
    Now we're on Discovery...giant penis.
Though HAL is male he is the mother of the ship HAL (his eye is a breast, Colossus in the Homeric allegory) and like man he cannot overcome his innate drive to complete the mission despite the illogic of killing the crew members...except for Bowman who survives.
    - HAL kills the crew when Bowman's outside. (They're sperm (or at least the carry the DNA of life) and only one sperm can make it to the target in the story of life... ONE winner and David Bowman (Odysseus, the "Bow-Man" and a King (David)...has The Right Stuff (pun again intended).
(Also, this may also by why there's so little dialog and emotion throughout the film. Mankind thinks they've aspired to the degree that they have overcome their emotional failings. It's an ego thing that actually shows up again at the end. (Think Spock.)
The man on the TV broadcast about the mission makes very special note that there's SIX crew members... five human and HAL. Well, perhaps Kubrick really meant that because sex is latin for six.
So they get to Jupiter and Bowman must explore the monolith - he can't avoid it if it wanted to - human nature.
He enters and travels through the fantastic journey to end up at 'the room' where he undergoes 'rebirth' to become reborn as the Star Child at the end (he reaches for the monolith as his final terminal gesture...the only gesture that matters).
    - The spaceship Discovery is a penis.
    - The 'pods' are sperm.
    - Crew are DNA (and when Dave disconnects HAL I'm thinking that's also HAL's DNA...(and each memory module is pretty much shaped like a monolith) Kubrick is saying that all creatures that realize their own existence with have to confront the wall of emotion vs. reason.
    - The monolith is a vagina. It's the source of recreation and beings who desire to reproduce (ascend) are innately drawn to it.
    - The fantastic light journey is Kubrick's 'visual sensory experience' of sex and perhaps the birth canal - where the mystery of life is. (There's even a few scenes where the pod has a 'tail' built from bubbles which strongly resembles a sperm.)
    - The 'clean room' is a womb. I've no idea about its styling (or whatever it is but I would like to know what the paintings are on the walls).
Dave goes through three stages of gestation (three trimesters?). Why does he 'become the person he sees?' I guess it's just dramatic license...hint that a great transformation that is beyond the scope of human sense is occurring. (And as one Art C. Clarke) said, "you can't distinguish advanced technology from magic".)
(But by the way, when Dave arrives in the room he's very shaken up and his facial features seem distended...fetus like?)
But he has to die to be reborn, circle of rebirth and a nod to existentialism... to change oneself is to 'kill the old you'...also dove-tails into Thus Spoke Zarathustra...also speaks to the Existential notion that cause and effect are often indistinguishable.
But about the wine glass falling on the floor. I think this serves two roles.
    1. It represents man's innate flaws
    2. It puts Dave in a prone position because that's where a humble servant would be...and this looking up happens throughout...ape looks up to the sky, man to the heavens, the camera angle in Dave's pod when he 'arises' to the light journey. (And I think this is also why the monolith is so tall! If it were 6 ft. tall man would think this is another man...his peer. In conjunction with that you have to note that it's wine...religious humility...not even caffine free diet Jolt would cut it.)
Lots and lots and lots of threes
    - captions ("The Dawn of Man", "Intermission", "Jupiter Mission: Eighteen Months Later")
    - sections to the movie (on earth, en route, and to the beyond)
    - crew members in hibernation
    - crew in the moon transport
    - windows on Discovery
    - pods in Discovery
    - dishes on AE-35 antenna
    - gestation period
I think the HAL's many memory units, his DNA, are monolith like and nod to the touch-monilith-sex-life-death-rebirth theme. This is consistent with Kubrick's Existential nod that all living beings are driven toward perpetuating that existence through sex... of course...it's the entire overall theme of the Sentinal allegory.Copyright 2019, Randy M. Adam, what do you think of all of the SciFi helmets, that include interior lighting, impractical and unnecessary that it is, so the camera can capture the wearer's facial expressions? Not very realistic (IMHO). Ralph
