    I can confirm that OP 17 (2016 bottling) with a dash of OP 12 (2017 bottling) makes for a beautiful blend; the younger one jazzes up the energy and also acts as a foil for the magnificent taste architecture of the older sibling, forming a kind of two-doll Russian doll effect - with the younger form running more quickly across the palate while a storey up the elder whisky rides along more languorously, showing off its intricate patterns of taste and sensation. 'Delightful' - as Sir Ralfy might say.

    Hiya Ralfy! I just received a bottle of this wonderful malt from my wonderful wife for my 41st birthday, based on your recommendation. We have a cabinet full of peaty whiskies after our recent trip to Islay and Cambeltown, all the way from Australia. My wife had offered to buy me a nice bottle and I was keen to go for a different non peaty malt. Normally I'd go for a Glendronach, Aberlour or Glenfarclas. I was after something new and watching your review convinced me that the Old Pulteney was the way to go. I have just re-watched your review while taking my first dram and you were spot on. Fantastic quality malt, so complex and thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you, Slainte!

    Well said Ralphy, and with such passion.
    I have a confession. For a long, long time, I had no idea what in the world a Manx Bothy was or entailed. I finally realized it's what Canadians usually refer to as a Bunky; though Bunkys are typically made of hewn logs and not stone.

      +ralfystuff I like this review partly because I scuba dive myself. Well done. Picked up a bottle of OP17 because of this review. I think it needs to be oxygenated or needs to sit in the bottle a while. I leave the stuff in my glass for about twenty minutes and it tastes much better than fresh out of the bottle, which is about 1.5 months old now. This is not always the case with whisky, as you know. The new Benriach 10 is best fresh out of the bottle. It goes bitter in the glass after about 20 minutes. The OP 17 from four years ago tasted more like gauze and band aids than the new stuff does. I had a few extra bottles of the OP21 from several years ago and traded them. Too sweet for my palate.

    Starting my Malt Journey from Los Angeles, and enjoying all your reviews. I just picked up Old Pulteney Twin Pack with 12 year and 17 year 375ml each bottle for 37 dollars. I have only tried glenfiddich 12 and glen moray 12 single malts and enjoying tasting the difference in these bottles and taking the time for the Pulteney's to settle and develop. I'm thinking of buying next highland park 12 or I might go for a more peated whiskey any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks again for all your vlogs and advice.

    +1 for the new angle in the bothy! Quick question about water: once you nail down the proper amount for each malt do you make a notation for when you come back to it if it's been a while or just a guesstimate? My own preference is roughly 1-2 teaspoons for C/S and a few drops up to 1tsp. for 40-46%.

  • @porsche911c
    @porsche911c 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Ralfy! I just got a bottle of this and wanted to say it certainly seems worth it! I have a question for you, though. Is there really that much of a difference in flavor and experience between a scotch with 40% ABV and 43%? Or even 46%? Does such a small amount really make that much difference?

    Greetings, Ralfy. Enjoying the channel. What do you think of doing a video on what aspects of the flavor profiles of various scotch whiskies are common to all? By this I mean there must be some basic flavor characteristics which define good scotch, with the various flavor "notes" superimposed on top. For example, both whisky and red wine can have tobacco and leather notes; yet wine and whiskey do not taste alike, of course. Therefore, we must be able to speak of what flavors are essential to whiskey. Hope that's clear, and a worthy question. Thanks for your efforts!

    Some suggested recommendations for reviews for 2016 Ralfy.
    Benromach Peat Smoke 2006. (You reviewed the 2005). 67ppm, NCF, NAC.
    Old Ballantruan 10 Year Old. 55ppm. NCF, NAC.
    Glen Grant 16 Year Old
    Glencadam 10 Year Old

      Laphi 15 would be very interesting. I didnt like it too much. Too sweet, thin and watery imho.

    • @RebMordechaiReviews
      @RebMordechaiReviews 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Hingle McCringleberry :"Too sweet" or just very fruity? The Laphroiag 18 YO is very fruity, slightly oily and less smoky seaweed than the 10 Year Old but that's what you would expect as peat influence deminishes and wood influence increases the longer the spirit remains maturing in the cask. The new 15 YO (43% abv), which I tasted at Laphroaig when I was in Islay back in October is exactly what you would expect.
      It is less smoky and seaweedy than the 10 YO but more intense than the 18 YO. It is fruitier and rounder in mouth fill than the 10 YO but not as heavy and fruity as the 18 YO. I found it very enjoyable and an eye opener as to how Laphroaig develops between 10 and 18 years. The one and only criticism I would have (which is why I did not purchase it) is it's very high price.

    • @hinglemccringleberry5431
      @hinglemccringleberry5431 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Reb Mordechai You're right with everything you mentioned. Its too fruity for my taste. I guess I'm just a sucker for the younger peat monster laphis. I did like the '91 vintage for germany (23yo) a lot, though. Fruity but also very leathery and complex. Price is of course ridicolous... :)

      +spankmeister -- I won't presume to speak for Ralfy (whose opinion is the one you care about), but if you will allow me to at least air my own thoughts on the matter, I am not bothered about it, for three reasons: (1) the "rules" for rum are pretty loose and liberal, (2) putting additives in rum is a long-standing practice and practically part of rum's tradition (and I will note that Ralfy has actually reviewed a "spiced rum," while I can't imagine him ever reviewing one of the "spiced whiskies" on the market), and (3) complaining about extra sugar in a spirit that comes from sugar cane strikes me as a little like a certain character in Dr. Strangelove deploring "fighting in the War Room."

      +spankmeister . . . it is the norm, sometimes it works, often it does not, especially in 'sipping' versions.

    Recently I bought 2 "without age" - Glenlivet and Glenfidich on Duty Frees, but agree wit you. is not good for the industry.

      +Fred Seckler A lot of people agree that it's not good for the industry, and even for whisky... and then they buy NAS. We have met the enemy and he is us - although it does not help that the average whisky "expert" is as compromised as the average brand ambassador on the "question" of whether age matters to whisky character; that such things are presented as even being "debatable" (much less determined by labeling on a case-by-case basis) is a major step back in whisky IQs, and only for the benefit of marketers.

    What an excellent shared malt moment indeed. Is this a single malt blend? I have a bottle of Old Pulteney in my cellar for a while now, but have to take it out soon after this review. I thought single malt was from just one cask, and know of one other whisky I like that has a number of all single malts blended (oos-ke-bah) pronounced.

    • @andreasbrandt1
      @andreasbrandt1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Wade W Single Malts are from one distillery but mostly have several whiskies of various ages blended together.
      Blended whiskies (Chivas, Johnny Walker, etc.) have whiskies from several distilleries blended together.
      Single Cask whiskies have spent all their maturation time in one cask - one might think. But even that is not always the case. It's only that the contents of your bottle has been taken from one cask. The whisky in that cask may again be a blend from other casks that has been put into this particular cask for a final maturation period.

    • @ralfydotcom
      @ralfydotcom  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Wade W . . . Andreas is correct, single malt is (mainly) pot still malted barley spirit from one distillery matured for a minimum of three years and one day in oak casks not exceeding 700l capacity. Lomond stills can also be used like at Loch Lomond.

    Hi Ralfy. I have a dear friend whose favorite whisky is Old Pulteney 17,. This summer he's getting married (to fellow whisky lover) and i'd love to give him and his wife a nice bottle to enjoy. What would you recommend as a "step-up" fron Old Pulteney 17, in the 100-200£ range? Thank you, love your videos!

    How did I get here? (almost two years after you recorded this video) I'm looking in Google Earth at the area around my oldest Step-son's apartment, I'm planning on going to to visit and we're looking at things to do in that area...
    I look down at the location such that I can see 10 to 20 miles in radius all around, and I type "Liquor Stores" and there are all the colored markers and names of the Liquor stores, everywhere in that part of the country.
    I click on a few near the apartment and each has a picture, some info, and a web site. I click on the web site and browse the selection of Scotch Single Malt...
    Then I find a larger store with an interesting selection, and I'm looking for affordable, good Single Malt that are not available at the stores in my area.
    I see a surprisingly relatively low price on the Old Pulteney 17 year old, so I Google Search "Old Pulteney 17 review" and what do you suppose pops up?
    Answer: Your TH-cam review of Old Pulteney 17... this review (along with other web sites that just have a paragraph or two... yours is the only TH-cam video that gives me the answer).
    Ralfy... you pop out of Google. Did you know that?
    I'm a Computer Scientist with 40 years of experience, so I understand... When I watch all of your videos (I *have* watched them all) since TH-cam is part of Google, the servers can keep track of my own viewing of videos, so if I do a web search, the engine can use information about my time online to sort it's replies.
    It would be interesting to try the same search from the login of someone who hasn't been watching all of the whisky reviews. It would be fascinating if Google still shows your TH-cam video in the search results. It may.
    Ralfy, when we all are no longer walking this Earth, your words, ideas, and recordings will still be here, preserved forever on the Internet and on the future generations of the Internet. Nothing will ever be removed from the Internet, information storage becoming cheaper, the first stirrings of the Internet will remain in the permanently available historic record. All available for future instantaneous searches.
    It's almost like you will live forever, man...
    Cheers!

    I've seen some companies try to justify the lack of an age statement by saying their whiskey was matured in a solera system. Does this hold up to scrutiny?

    • @ralfydotcom
      @ralfydotcom  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +snozzcumbers . . . no, 3yo whisky can be part of a solera system and result in spirit-driven immaturity.
