Thanks for directing me towards Pulteney Ralf! The 12 is maybe the loveliest bourbon-style dram I've had.
Cudos for the mAlternatives! I'm getting excited about R.L. Seale's 10yo Bajan Rum! Fortunately a handful of rum guys are doing an excellent job educating us on the matter of additives in rum, which if I remember correctly you have adressed in the past as well.
The last time I've tasted appleton 12 side by side with a certain celebrated sugar-loaded rum of double value and flashy presentation, it blew my mind how the sweetness impaired the flavor of the latter!

I'm really proud of myself and want to brag to everyone, I've been able to find 4 full unopened bottles of liquor from pre-prohibition times at yard sales and antique shows, 2 bourbons, a rye, and a brandy. The brandy is the oldest, from the 1870's or 1880's.
It would have been 5 bottles, but one guy said he dumped out his 100 year old bottle of rye whiskey because he thought it was too old and he couldn't sell it!
When I told him he poured a lot of money and history down the drain he was not happy with himself.
Thanks for staying (and expanding) the course against the NAS trend in marketing. Your support means a lot to whisky and to whisky consumers.

Another year, another excellent choice for Whisky of the Year! I was fortunate enough to sample the OP 17 at Royal Mile in Edinburgh this summer and came home with a bottle. Cracking stuff!

Getting caught up with your videos and I am in Indiana here in the USA and we are getting a lot of smaller distillers here. I belong to a cigar club where we sample different spirits that are normally whiskeys, rums and bourbons and have come across some very good local stuff. Keep up the great videos!!

Hey Ralfy! A swede here! I just wanted to explain to you how our alcohol policy is.
The government owns the only store that sells alcohol, and they have these to policies:
1, They are not allowed to market or have any preference on what they sell you, i.e no marketing or timely price reductions
2, All products in their respective class i.e liqour, beer, wine etc have a set tax but also a set profit margin.
This means that if you want to buy some regular vodka or something, you're getting ripped off. But on the flip side if you buy more expensive let's say whisky, because they have the same profit margin as the cheap vodka, you can get the more expensive stuff at pretty good prices compared to abroad.
So to sum up, I don't like our system either, but it does have it's upsides for us who like the better whiskies and such :)

I definitely agree with your choice of best single malt for 2015, Old Pulteney 17YO Is superb. You also make a very valid point about batch variation. I'm going to make myself more aware of the problem having got my brother to give me all his empty whisky advent calendar sample bottles in order to save and compare both current and future batches of the whiskies I like. If I subsequently find a deterioration I can make a very valid decision on whether to continue purchasing the whiskies I feel are becoming substandard. Happy New Year everyone!!!

Just got around to watching this. OP 17 was our whisky of the year last year for my whisky group. Nice to see we have similar feelings. I've taken my money to Dutch websites where the prices are far cheaper than in the UK. About to get some Ardbeg Corry, I know NAS, for £40. Considerably better than the £65 or so charged in this country. Anyway, have a great new year!

ardbeg 10 is still such an authentic and consistent whisky. the last 2 years it has been my december/xmas whisky over laphroaig, which used to be choice for this time of year. i just find the quality better, and have had some bottles of laphroaig that have come up short recently. (in the US) ardbeg is always so rustic and vibrant.

Hi Ralfy! I'm a late starter on my "Scotch Journey", jolted into it this last January with a dram of Glenmorangie 18. Through you and a few other reviewers, I've found lots of quality, affordable Scotch. I've also learned much about Scotch, how it is made, its history, and the regions. I've learned how to find a bargain, whether I'm in Virginia, DC, or NYC. (You can actually find some very good prices in DC and NYC, some considerably better than in VA.)
Thank you for your reviews, Ralfy! I like your position on NAS single malt Scotch that you followed through 2015 and will follow in 2016! Since I learned of that from you a few months ago (I believe it was from your malt of the year 2014 video), I too have followed that.

In NYC, there's Astor Wines & Spirits at 399 Lafayette St. in lower Manhattan. In DC, there's Calvert Woodley at 4339 Connecticut Avenue, NW. Whereas Lagavulin is $103 in NoVA, it's $67 at both Astor and CW.
Astor is big, and has a wide selection of spirits. In addition to a good Scotch collection, they carry real absinthe. I want to try Pernod Absinth, having tried Un Emile 68 in the past.

Just picked up a bottle of Old Pulteney 17. Looking forward to drinking it while watching your review. This year's whisky of the year stung the wallet coming in at $96. FYI, my bottle does state that it is unchill-filtered.
back again will have to try this as old pulteney navigator is one of my favourites

Oh yes the Okd Pultney 17 years is very good. Could afford it yesterday for around 100 swissies. Opened it and enjoyed it with a whisky-friend. Salty and delightful....

There's two things you should really try from Holland!
From the Whiskybase shop there's a bottling called Archives which is a range of bottlings from different distelleries but they're special. All Archives bottles are non chill filtered - non colored - cask strength - single cask with age statements. An amazing chance to try the purest form of whisky at reasonable prices.
Also I'm from the city of Schiedam. This is the capital of Jenever (I think it's Gin in the english language). The Ketel1 Jenever comes from here. But in Schiedam there's also a Jenever Museum. They make their very own Jenever but it's special. It's called Old Schiedam and it's a "Single Malt Jenever". It's made nearly the same way as whisky and even aged 3 years in oak barrels. The only difference is added ingredients for the Jenever Flavour. If you ever get your hands on a bottle try it out! (: I can also send you one if you really can't find it, but we can talk about that (:

What a wonderful structure you seem to do these reviews from. Stone? Fire without enclaves fireplace? Is that a cask in the right foreground? Incredible! I would love to buy a tiny structure like this, filled with archaic wonder, to just hang out in middle of nowhere, personally.
Respect for not reviewing "non age statement whisky". They've got a problem with internal staves but dropping age statement is ok though!!

I was shocked to see the The GlenDronach 15 Year Old Revival, which I’ve been used to buying for £50, is now £150. And the Snow Phoenix I bought for £49.99 3 years ago is now £400!
Hi, i've just discovered your great series of video and i love them! i'm fairly new to the world of whisky (though it's been quite a few years since i've started drinking and loving it), but it's not easy to find a place here in italy where to learn and experience something more... i've heard in bolzano PUNI established the first italian whisky distillery and they produced their first 3yo bottles, i'm most interested in the Alba (with marsala and islay casks) do you know anything about it? Maybe planning a review? thanks a lot!

Hello, Ralfy, I'm just starting a quarterly single-malt study Friday coming up in New Canaan, CT., USA. Turned on to malts by Scotsman, Brian Leith. Very excited and using your videos each time we meet. For the first meeting we'll watch your reviews on MaCallan 12 and Laphroig Quarter Cask. But can you recommend any of your videos we should see first. We're all just beginning and look to you for advice. I wait all year for the fireside chat. I just bought a bottle of compass box flaming heart and didn't open it as yet, but look forward to your input. Inner staves are an interesting addition for some casks, but can't casks be cared for and re-done even if they're older? Or do they just serve for a time and then no good for maturing?
