    • What to LOOK for When ...
    Link to Checklist: miguelsgarage.c...
    The IS model first appeared back in 1999 when Lexus needed a sports compact luxury sedan for its line up. At the time they only had 6 models, the ES, which was a rebadged Toyota Camry, the GS, LS, SC, RX, and the LX SUV, which was also a rebadge Toyota Land Cruiser. So in order to save on costs, they once again rebadged their Japanese Altezza model into the IS300 for the American market. A great sporty car with great potential, but not necessarily very luxurious (I can attest to that as I had a 2002 IS300 in yellow). During the early 2000’s, Lexus was going thru a global reorganization and separation from its parent company Toyota, which completed in 2005, right before the launch of the second-generation IS line up. During this reorg and transformation, Lexus started to change their design language and needed a more luxurious sports compact sedan. And so, they came up with this! Offered as a 2006 model, buyers here in the US could choose from the IS250 and the IS350 variants.
    This specific model has a 2.5 liter V6 engine producing 206 Horsepower and 186 Foot-pounds of torque thanks to direct-port fuel injection and variable valve timing.

    Video is pretty accurate, I have and 09 250 with 132k miles on it, just changed the water pump 2 months ago, got it done for 250$. I also have leaking struts and a bad cv boot that I will replace this year due to 130k mikes with the oversized rims the first owner put on it. 6 years plus of ownership and these are the only problems I’ve had. I downgraded back to 17 inch wheels and it runs so much smoother now. I’m hoping to keep driving this until 250k

      The one thing I don't like about this car is that it shifts to 1st gear if I slow down below 5mph. If I'm going over a major speed bump or sometimes crawling around a corner it goes down. Is this normal because if it shifts down to 1st from 2nd I immediately want to go while it's still rolling then it's an ugly upshift

      @@juliearuna9021 Thank you for your kind comment. I bought my IS when it was 9 yrs old but it had low miles. Everyone claims it is a "sleeper car" which it is not. Yes, I could've purchased a BMW 325,, yet I've learned from what my friends did. I don't need the status symbol of a BMW and rather appreciate the elegance and reliability of the Lexus. I live in Massachusetts and any car with more horsepower is a waste of money (and gas).. I have the AWD version and it deals with the snow fine. Recently, because of Covid and the car prices increasing, my car is worth more than I paid for it. I could sell it, yet if I buy another car, its price will also be inflated.

    • @Miguelsgarage
      @Miguelsgarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Intermittent problems are really hard to diagnose. Your best bet will be to take it to a shop so they can diagnose it. It could be one of the sensors that attaches to the struts to report to the computer the vehicle's angle. These cars also have sensors that apply the brakes to ONE of the two front tires if the tails steps out. This helps you stabilize the car. All these sensors need to work together for it to function properly. Perhaps one of the sensors or the linkages that feed those sensors is going bad. Hope you can work it out!

      Miguel's Garage it means that you have to install one Oil catch can. Carbon build up It's a common issue of all direct injection engines. Pros. You can find awesome cars sold very cheap. Cons. You might have a dead engine or that drinks a lot of oil.

    • @Miguelsgarage
      @Miguelsgarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don’t know that installing a catch can on a daily driver like this would be good. That’s another variable to worry about. You’re probably better off just cleaning the intake every 80-100k miles or so...

    • @Wolfox360
      @Wolfox360 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Miguel's Garage as you wish, if you like most that mechanics rape your engine, than just unscrewing and cleaning a can leaving your engine untouched, it's up to each owner to decide.

      @benoitbricet8885 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it is common problem mentioned at clublexus. The operation to clean the engine is long and costly.
      Whatever, I'm not sure that the catch can brings definitely closure.
      One of the "seems to work" method is to inject a special cleaning foam at regular intervals, also, at regular intervals, to push the engine as hard as possible during a middle trip.
      The combination of those two mesures seemed to work well for most.

      Miguel's Garage What is your opinion on the ES and LS?

    • @Miguelsgarage
      @Miguelsgarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In terms of what? and also what year are we talking about? Generally speaking, since I don't know which specifics you'd like me to talk about, I can say that the ES is a very smooth reliable luxury car. I think it brought a lot to the segment. So much so that Both Mercedez and BMW followed its foot steps introducing FWD version of their own. As far as the LS, in general terms, I think that the LS just as Lexus as a brand redefined the segment and brought a whole new level of value and customer service that wasn't available before. Just to put it into perspective, the LS project cost Lexus 1 BILLION dollars in 1983 or just close to 3 BILLION dollars in today's money. You only do that when your goal is to be the BEST!

What about the plastics cracking or becoming sticky? Does the 2006 model have this issue? I have seen ads of IS 250s, 2007, 2008, that mention the whole dashboard and door panels being new or being sticky... Was there any recall on the 2006 model?
      The transmission... after destroying a couple of transmissions over my 40 years+ driving, I have learned that a transmission is not to be abused. I understand that by what you have said, you know that too. The state of the lubricant is very important, high temperatures will kill it (fast driving, heavy loads and towing), and perhaps the materials used on the components will also play their roles. On the other hand, the driver will determine the length of a transmission's life. Thanks for sharing your Lexus experience.

Is this normal because if it shifts down to 1st from 2nd I immediately want to go while it's still rolling then it's an ugly upshift

    Have owned a IS250 X for a few years, now with 95k kms (60K miles). This is my second Lexus, previously RX for 10 years. I work as a limousine driver in my retirement and enjoy comfort, my latest work vehicle is a 2016 Audi Q7 3.0TDI. I feel good when I get back in my little Lexus and drive it, quieter, smoother, more comfortable, wouldn't swap it if there was a cash difference. The luxury sports would probably be even more quiet. The ES350 leaves them all in the dust, the only issue is the head space in the back seat for people over 6'2', but still ultra quiet, smooth and comfortable. Colour is mica red and outshines the Audi although still 8 years older. Regular oil changes is the key.

    Regarding the steering. If you install those polyurethane bushings in this Lexus it will ride like a s**t. You shouldn’t buy the IS250 thinking it’s a sports car. It’s a inexpensive luxury sedan that retains the Lexus ride quality. Urethane bushings will ruin that in no time. If you want Porsche steering, buy a Porsche.

      @Miguelsgarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I test drove a 2007 is250 recently with 223,000km on the clock . The ride was very comfortable. I did notice at 100km/h it was only in 4th gear , unfortunately for that particular car there was a transmission shudder when changing upto 5th gear at 120km/h.
    It did have the usual cracked dash & milky headlamps. I believe these cars suffer from carbon build up too. I intend on buying an Is250 automatic over the next couple of months as a weekend car . ( here in Ireland the car tax is 1080euro per year . Fuel at the moment is 1.85 per litre so it's an expensive car to run - a 3rd gen Is300h tax is 190euro tax for comparison)

I wouldn’t necessarily say at a terrible rate, but I measured it and it’s 1 quart consumed every 1700 miles . I’m used to checking it often and topping it off if needed. I do believe this happens with all older cars. It’ll consume more oil as it ages and gets above 100k miles like mine. But yeah overall a good car.

    • @chadh6815
      @chadh6815 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sea Foam in the gas tank will do nothing for carbon building on the valves in a direct injection engine. The injectors spray directly into the combustion chamber, so unlike a port injection engine the fuel never hits the valves. Spraying it into the intake may help prevent buildup of you do it often enough, but i don't think there's any solid evidence it does.

    really needing an awd car... wondering if i'd be crazy to go down (in age anyway) from a 2014 corolla with 90,000kms to a 2009 awd is250 with 220,000kms. the lexus is really in good shape body and frame wise as my corolla but obviously has more than double the mileage and is almost twice as old. either way the corolla is going down the road in no more than 5 years. i have not usually been scared of mileage and not really sure why i bothered to buy a new corolla, should have gone used.... was just trying new for the first time ... new is over rated.... not wasting time again on that

    Looked at a 2010 AWD IS250 with 200 000 km (125 000 miles) in perfect condition all Lexus dealer serviced for a good price with no accidents. You think it would be a better car than a 2014 Mazda 3 with a way lower mileage?

    • @Miguelsgarage
      @Miguelsgarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Radziievskyi they are different types of cars. The Mazda is an economy car. The Lexus is a luxury car. Lexus will cost more to maintain but I think is a much better product.

    • @michaelhuang0417
      @michaelhuang0417 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      i own this car, this is one of the nicer ones out there. But realistically, you want a car that is in your price range. If you want to buy a car, buy one that's newer/with less mileage. Even though Lexus is known for its quality, the maintenance cost of a high mileage luxury car can crash you and even after you fix everything up, the value of the car does not rise a bit. Be smart and choose the newer Mazda, and buy a newer Lexus when you can afford it down the road.

    Hello guys!!
    I'm seriously interested in buying this specific car, never owned a lexus before 😭
    Can any of you (owners), give a brief feedback in regards to how expensive basic maintainance costs (brakes and oil changes, tags, registration, tune-ups, etc)?
    Thanks 👍👍👍

      I live in europe, i have a is250 2012 white pearl. Its awesome. Only thing is, when you put your foot down on the pedal the car drinks alot of bensin. 12L/100km. Otherwise its around 8L/100km.
      Im a toyota guy so i do the labor on it myself. Cost is average for parts in sweden at least. Its really quite in the car. Also its smaller then it seems. Im 1.85 and people usually dont fit behind me, although my wife says im leaning to much back. Just remember its a luxury car, not a race car. Dont get me wrong it has power and all. Just isnt ment to be a race car.

    These are a hell of a lot of car for the money in the UK but, due to there emissions and our tax bands there over £500 a year to tax. If you can find a 2005 model there only £315 a year but 2006 onwards the tax bands and emissions grouping changed again. Certain cars, like the 350z, people only really want the 05 and below models because of this.

    • @MajorKlanga

      I think you'll find the automatic is in a lower tax bracket than the manual. I'm thinking of getting one of these because they seem to have a great reputation in the UK although reading the comments above is a bit off putting.
