The PhD isn't the only academic terminal degree, the EdD is an academic terminal professional degree. In the same capacity the DBA is also an academic terminal professional degree. I earned both the EdD and PhD degrees. The EdD is NOT PhD lite as some in academia suggest; it is a terminal professional degree and you go through rigorous curriculum and instruction and research just like the PhD. The only difference is just where you choose to work, i.e., academic settings or professional/industry settings. I'm proud to be a recipient of both the EdD and PhD degrees. There are some EdD programs that offer stipends and lots of research opportunities.

However, I also believe that not every school should be allowed to run the EdD degree program at their institutions because some institutions don't really understand the purpose/role of the EdD degree and do horrible job administering the EdD degree. Some Deans/Professors don't administrate the EdD degree program well that they end up weakening the intent purpose and role the EdD serves as a terminal professional degree. Just like the PhD isn't a program of choice for some institutions, I also believe that the same should happen for the EdD degree where institutions provide extensive programming process to be worthy to administrate the EdD degree i.e., faculty quality, faculty credentials, faculty workload, professional/industry experiences, etc. Some Professors/Deans think of the EdD as PhD lite (which is bias and uneducated mindset/thinking), so they do their best to limit the extent of the EdD degree in their institution, especially offering only few opportunities for their EdD students just to prove their bias/hopeless thinking that the EdD degree is PhD lite degree which isn't true. The EdD degree is a special kind of terminal doctorate; it can be clinical, academic, and research.
