Homemade Shifter Kart gets Thrashed to Pieces (Less Reliable than a F1 Car??)

- Our backyard shifter kart is insane! We full send our home built shifter kart, but not without a TON of reliability issues due to the setup simply making way too much power for the chassis. We have gone far beyond how much power a go kart can handle. Every 2 or 3 laps we have issues, whether it be the chassis breaking, the fender coming off, or bolts shaking loose on the engine. The lack of suspension is uncomfortable around the track, but this thing sure is fast!

It's an awesome idea to connect a regular engine to a gearbox like that, but perhaps it'd be better to do it from scratch with a new donor gearbox on a fresh frame? Because this proof of concept showed it worked, you just need to un-jank it and use a fresh frame and components that aren't half broken already.
of course it works....building things that are jank is above their skill set.
This is the gnarliest yard kart we've ever built😬
Wondering if it would help or even be possible to double tube your frame on this one in its higher stress areas, like weld up the initial skeleton and run a slightly larger tube over top of it before mounting spindles and such. (Don't know how possible it is, but seems like it could add some extra rigidity in pretty crucial areas)
Love the content, been watching yall for years and always looking forward to the next builds!
Revamp that thing lol
just rip it boyz
I agree. It's to the point it's destroying parts.
Get rid of the cintrifical cluch you have 2 clutches for no reason
The jankiness factor on this one is very, very high - I love it! The broken janky kart being hauled by the janky recovery vehicle is perfect. Don't change a thing.
The (transmission) vibrates because it still has counterweights on the crankshaft but no piston and connecting rod to offset it. You could try trimming as much of the counterweights off as possible to reduce the vibration.
With those fenders it should be called the "To-the-Moon Buggy"!
On the fun to drive scale 9.99 (Lazy-Boy view)
On the trouble-free scale 1.0
Overall entertainment scale 10.00
The best thing about this project is learning what this engine/trans combo can do for any number of applications!
"Paint a Jet Boat" I see what you did there Charles!
When this build came up I was super excited because this is an idea I've had for years. Definitely want to see more of this build and many more builds with 212, 225, 5hp Briggs type engines mated to gearboxes
The look on John's face after realizing that the frame was broken was classic. That thing is nuts. I'd love to see more of it. Maybe with suspension next time.
Maybe Go Power sports will take a Q from you guys. and build a gear box to go with those engines. that can be mounted to their go kart chassis. so a person can get everything they need all in one place to build a really fast shifter kart. that's what research and development is all about.
Love the ride break fix repeat. One of the my favorite projects you all have built
This is one of the greatest things you've ever done. I see questions about doing stuff like this all the time on forums but few people actually do it. Please keep at it or make a new one from scratch if this frame isn't holding up to the abuse. I went and found the bottom end out of a KLT-160 to use in a similar project because of this.
I used to watch yall videos about 4 years ago and enjoyed them so much. So glad to see that yall are still going and doing well. Keep it up i love you guys.
i was wondering what that mechanism was on the cam. thanks ike!
the vibration is probably from the crank having no rod so its counterweights arent balancing anything. maybe if you know somone with a lathe they could get a piece of round stock and cut the ends to be the same as the ends of the crank so its just basically a straight shaft
Thank you for the great entertainment and also the education you've provided over the years! This is my favorite channel on youtube for sure! Keep up the great work guys!
Yeah, it would be fun to see the frame beefed up to handle the power (or even a small full suspension build) and possibly a top speed run. I am guessing she can hit 65-70 mph.
Huge fan of the recycled kx fenders lol looks great guys and wow she fast!!
The whole frame is flexing it's cool how the front is flexing like a torsion bar probably how the front cracked. I don't think that was designed for that.
Ya boy good job
Hope to see more of this cart! Thanks guys.
Awesome example of experience IKE . You taught us all something today .
The old crank is balanced to have a rod and piston on it. It might also be bent.
It’s going to keep vibrating itself to pieces
i wonder how centered everything is after the weld?
@@rack1850 just pull the crank and run a straight shaft
@@briancobb3907 that's would be a great idea however the amount of machine work to build a new shaft without the counter weights would be outrageous expensive you would have to have the bearing surfaces machined in and shaft has to be splined on both sides plus God knows what else.
Rather B welding did this with an electric motor and machined a straight crankshaft for his and it was smooth.
Good summary of assembly lube at the end.
My only comment there is be careful about grease and oil journals. It can clog them temporarily actually creating potential damage at start up until the oil actually pushes it out of the way.
I’d still use grease over dry, but I’d much rather use oil of any grade 2 or 4 cycle.
shouldnt use grease in an engine assembly lube or oil are both cheap enough not to do that
Definitely more!!! Keep upgrading the cart!!
Git er done! Full rebuild, full suspension, full Send! 👍 I luv it!
Happy New Year guys 🥳
That thing is a wild ride! It's great how this channel went from working out of Johns fathers garage to a full blown shop with a test track. Great channel guys!
Please do more with this kart. Maybe put a torque converter on it. Add an outer support for the transmission to relieve some of the strain on the input shaft.
ratherbwelding did something similar running a tc into a high/low trans, i'd imagine with a 5 speed that'd be a little excessive in the ratio department though
This is such an awesome build! I am currently building one of my own. I hope to see more of this fantastic build. I noticed Ike is a lot more cautious after the incident with the honduki
Sounds like the lil rescue truck needs an episode, fixes and maybe some upgrades.
I'm studying my second year to become an automotive engineer and i'm still learning from you guys! Favorite channel no doubt!
I'm at 1:56 and just realized, for hydraulic brakes why not snag some from one of those mopeds you bought a while back (if you still have them). That would be perfect for this. For your engine shifting issue, you might want to make it so you have it where the engine mounts to a plate without slots, then use a large bolt or a couple of large bolts to adjust your distancing then double nut it to keep it in place, maybe some blue thread locker as well to be safe.
EDIT: Not having a compression release is kinda like on old push-mowers, where they had high compression and could be a bear to start, so some of them had things like a wind-up starter where you would wind up the starter and then let it go and it would turn your engine for you.
When you rig everything you touch, instead of doing things skillfully, and right - this is what you get! This is the real mantra of this channel.
"You could paint a bass boat with that."
Charles' jokes are the icing on the expertise.
Whenever you Rosette always be sure to leave a tiny Gap on your weld line like a 16th of an inch all you need. Another thing y'all should look into is dual shield. I'm not talking about just flux core, this is e71t wire . 045 you use your regular shielding gas with it and it is super strong. That's what I used in oilfield fabrication when I was engineering. Your settings are going to be way different though if you have a digital for example you would be at 23.5 at 245. That's starting at about quarter inch. You don't weave it you just straight bead you can weave it if you want to makes it look fancy but all you need to do is straight bead.
I would call this a d-i-why go kart, but it is something I have thought about doing. Love the jankey builds, keep it up guys!
That is one badass cart!!!! Love to watch you guys and the fun, work you all share with everyone.
We are calling that kart
"The ragged edge"
You boys take it easy for a second and consider what needs to be a bigger part of your builds.
Central California watching
Oh I definitely want to see this thing more. Just keep upgrading it as ya go and it will be amazing before ya know it!
John's facial expression once Isaac and Charles says the spindle tube on the frame was broken, priceless
You guys are pushing the limit on how fast you can go in the dirt with no suspension! 👍👍
Gears make everything better! It not only makes it look and feel faster, it's so much nicer hearing it go through the gears than a CVT or torque converter drive whining at a similar RPM
Y’all I have been dying to see something like this for a long time. Killing it dudes I’m so glad to see where you guys started to now.
Holy smokes that is fast! Looove the tilly on a gearbox, such an awesome setup!
Definitely love this project and would love to see more. Also it was interesting in the beginning Charles went the opposite way on your track. I'd love to see more of that, too see how different it is time wise.
Do I want to see more? Absolutely. That cart is smokin! Thanks and we'll see you next time.
If there is a way I know you guys will make it work. Watching this channel I've learned so much enough to enspire me to build my own project 😁.
yea i agree you need to put that setup on something with suspension. then you will have the fastest cart you ever built yet i think.
I love the KX fenders you guys are creative as all get out.
I bought a Mega Motor 212 from Wal-Mart during pandemic for $500.00! I don't think they knew what it was worth! I love it!
Ive done this with old engines that are considered junk and remove the top end and use just the bottom end as a gear box. I built utility buggys with dump beds to haul dirt and compost around the property and it had alot of torque and power.
I would like to see a head to head race at a dedicated kart track of the backyard shifter kart and the yard dart, and maybe bring the t4 out to see how they compare?
Try and reinforce but still keep it lightweight and small. It looks like a fun ride guys. Love it.
Cool nice little cart, hope you had a great Christmas and wishing you a great and prosperous New Year
As far as the compression release goes you can relatively easily instal a manual push in compression release that is completely outside of the engine and then remove all the components of the cam lobe centrifugal compression release. Operation is simple, push down on the release and youl feel%hear it click open, then pull the pull starter and it will automatically close the release when it starts. You can order them through almost any aftermarket shop that deals with Harley stuff as well as Amazon.
Quote of the day. "The recovery vehicle needs a recovery vehicle."
Ive been wanting to see you guys do a project with that trike frame you got last year. It looked like a healed hauler trike. Would make a cool drift shifter trike.
Love the video. Keep up the great content and the great work.
I have never, in the entire time I've been watching, ever once heard you guys mention tire pressure. You know you can soften the tires, which are the only suspension you have on a solid frame.
First yeah!!! You guys are awesome!!! Because of you I got into building, thank you guys for all y’all do. Hey from Texas!! I’m 10 min from go power sports, it’s my home away from home
Hell yeah I wanna see more of this cart!! Get this badboy fixed up and reinforced then you'll be golden. 👍👍
That definitely works well. Cool stuff guys👍
Fully supplied shop with benches galore!!!!!
CAC: still working on the floor.
I cant believe yall are still working on the floors as projects come along. hahahaha I would have an engine station, wheels and tire station and assembly rack etc.
Yes . I would love to see more on this project
I want to see more of this project it is awesome and we going to see how an AMX 2.0 handles it. You guys have an excellent day
The same thing happened to my mod 2 cam some debris got stuck behind the compression release and it would not start it was hard to pull
Good run. Those little trucks are cool.
Coming from the backwoods of PA, I can honestly say this is not the first time I've heard the phrase: "We whittled one out of wood" being applied to mechanical parts that should NEVER BE WHITTLED OUT OF WOOD... However, it's only stupid if it doesn't work. APPALACHIA FOR THE WIN!!! 🤘😝🤘
This is a great go cart Love to see more maybe you could put on some type of suspension to make the ride better and not break the frame.
Cool idea using that transmission and stuff like that off the blaster I've got some setting that I plan on doing something similar with but you're a lot of your vibrations probably coming from your crankshaft cuz you guys just cut the rod off I do believe and if you built a shaft to go straight through that would take care of 90% of your vibration and give you way more horsepower I would think
Love it! But put that engine and transmission on a capable suspension kart or up the gearing and fit bigger tyres to handle rough ground at speed.
This kart would be a monster with a reinforced chassis and a good suspension under it. Super cool idea using a 5 speed trans with a high hp engine like that. This vould definitely be a monster with just a few improvements though for sure. Already is a monster but it could really be unstoppable with a few tweeks. I definitely think y'all sound put a good suspension system under it though that alone would change it dramatically
the pin you used a bolt for... my tech tip.. make the pins longer than stock, i use bolts also . more leverage . works so much better
I love your video so much and I watch them all the time they are awesome! I am wondering what kind of transmission you are using on this cart and what transmission you recommend for that size cart, I am only looking to have a 3 speed with a fully manual clutch.
Awesome build, I've wondered how mating those up would go. Time to look for a motorcycle transmission.
I think a Harley transmission would be perfect...small, compact lightweight and durable....wouldn't need anything fancy ....just an old shovel 4 speed....and a ratchet top would be perfect for a cart
What a ripper, I've always said there powerful lil engines but straight sprockets n chain or cvt are ok, but chain is boring and cvt is much better but you have lil control over it, as having gears you can control what's happening and use the power as and whn you want it, a cvt you have to wait for It to spin up or slow dwn for it to be where u want it. Grate video 💯💯💯💯👊👊👊👍👍👍👍
Please do more with this build I'm about to do the exact same thing it's just winter here and I hate working in my garage
wicked fast, any motor sport is periods of wrenching, playing and wrenching to fix what you broke... I liked when Charles went the reverse of the track, that could be fun for awhile
Love this vids guys!!! Can’t wait to get out cart out of the shop!!
Good job guys. It would be cool if you could make something similar to Henry Ford's Quadra-cycle, but with a Cars and Cameras twist.
This is an incredible build guys. Would love to see this from scratch all brand new concepts is there just make it 100% better🤷🏻♂️👍🏼🤩❤️
Yep i want to see more of this cart!
More, more, more and some more! Always love your videos, subscriber for life here. Keep safe guys.
You need to convert those old pull start handles to the snowblower D ring handle. Way better on the hands an a heck of alot easier to start up .
This is what makes tinkering with gokarts fun. Use what ever you have and throw together an abomination.
Nice to see that tiny truck again. That thing needs some love and an engine swap. Thrash it down the creek!
Nasty!
Question....when are y'all going to work on the Kei truck?
the vibration is from the counter weight on the crank with out the piston and rod to counter balance
You guys are the best!!! Can’t wait to get our shifter cart out of the shop!!!
Definitely keep building the cart!
Great idea, but, your vibration problem is no piston and rod has thrown the balance way out, not easy to fix, love the channel and keep it up mate cheers 🇦🇺👍😃
That vibration might be because the secondary donor engine is out of balance? Or bent too, but I believe they are balanced with the rod and piston on it? Wonder if you could machine a straight shaft through the crank bearings to eliminate the counter weights
Would love to see this all fixed up proper, not just patched up. That thing is a RIPPER!
Please do more with this kart I love it !!
glad to see the mini truck is gettin some camera time
You inspire me alot
Keep up the good work...
You guys should figure out some kind of "air ride" seat cushion, kinda like in Semi's but able to move from cart to cart, to save your spines. Maybe some kind of gel cushion...
Amazing how much faster a manual transmission is compared to a Torque converter. This thing is great!
noticed the kx80 fenders! look good
Make sure you are oiling Is the crank bearings on the blaster motor
The same thing happen on my mini bike, a piece of the governor gear broke off and wedge itself between the acr on cam, easy fix and the governor was completely removed after that.
You guys should roll the grand prix, just so there's an actual track to try and hook up on. Maybe dig some spots on corners to get a real track with banks too. Build your own jumps with the extra dirt. Would be very cool to see a go cart track. And you guys could start sort of regulated races eventually
Wow! You guys are crazy ripping that around.... ADD GUSSETTS!
