Love your daughter helping you out. When I have kids I hope to give them these same experiences.
What a lovely young lady and a wonderful helper. As for the harvest, I would be thrilled with so many. I am alone now so I like the small ones. Thank you.
So nice of you thanks. check out todays video on potatoes I think you will enjoy it. th-cam.com/video/L1rf1FXtI9s/w-d-xo.html
I love your glamorous assistant she looks like your double!
Yeah even more so now she is 5feet 2 inches lol
Such a fresh and organic harvest
Nice video Tony, and you have a beautiful, charming daughter! It's great to see dad's with their kids; lovely! 😁💞👵
Absolutely wonderful that your little one is so interested!
She has known no different. Ive been doing this before she was born. In the early days she used to come up in her pram and watch. As she got older started to help 😁👌
Nice haul from that bucket! Your daughter looked so happy to be in the garden. Beautiful smiles. I sowed a carrot bucket after watching one of your videos. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 we get a good result. Best wishes~ 🌱💚
Thats brilliant, I am about to sow my carrots in buckets too this year as I want to be able to move them later for a special project
Up Rooted I used to love being out with my dad, he taught me how to grow my own veggies. This year I have bell peppers, radish, beetroot, lettuce, potatoes, cucumber and spinach in my little garden.
Spuds, the plant that just keeps giving.
Excited to harvest mine in a few weeks, Mine are just in flower now.
Pull the flowers off Julie, They just use up energy that could be going to the potatoes themselves
UK Here We Grow thanks for that!
That looks like a great first crop of Charlottes. I’m inspired to lift some of our earlies tomorrow.
Liz Zorab - Byther Farm Will you upload a video on how it goes ?
Take a look Liz I will be looking out for the video :)
Me too
Brilliant. So useful as I'm growing potatoes for the first time!
Great to hear!Sorry for the late reply
What a wonderful helper Tony 😊 looks like she has a green thumb too.
We're so excited to do the same. We have some growing in soil but have 5 buckets ready to go. Just need to drop some in this week 🥔
Sounds great! Im sure your going to have a great crop Suzy :)
3 down, 2 to Grow, I mean Go 🤣
Nice to see Caitlyn, I dug up the rest of my Charlottes today. I have kept my greenhouse time to a minimum as a wren set up home under a flower pot on the slatted staging. I tried to keep the area cool by wetting the wall and floor and the flower pot. They are now successfully fledged so the potatoes have been lifted, some ENORMOUS, good clean crop. Tony, one thing a farmer told me is that you should handle the spuds as if the are eggs, but I expect yours will not be hanging around long enough to bruise.
No, Wendy, they were eaten over the few days but my main crops aren't thrown around like that as I need to store them and if they bruise they can't be stored
What a great way too spend time with your kids . Nice too see , brings back happy memories of when i was a child . Great way too learn about gardening , you never forget .
Exactly the way I learned too :)
Thanks for a very instructional video. I have my potatoes in a container also, first time, so what you showed is perfect for me. Thank you from California!
Glad it was helpful! Sorry for the late reply
wow one container , I cant wait to take out my patio ones !
Thanks check out todays video on potatoes I think you will enjoy it. th-cam.com/video/L1rf1FXtI9s/w-d-xo.html
Cracking potato reveal, thanks for sharing 👍
Anne thanks for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it :)
How does he do it. He is a master with spuds. I dug up my first bucket yesterday and got…… ONE!! ONE flippin potato! 😂 Gonna leave the other ones a few weeks longer, I probably did rush this one a bit. But still, after 2.5 months of growing, all it managed was ONE? If my harvest is bad again this year, gonna give it one more third year next, but that’ll be it before I throw in the towel. Too much work for too little result.
nice haul, they taste so good when they just been pulled up, especially chips cooked in fresh oil if (like mine) they been growing for too long for new potatoes!
Yeah I love proper chips :) Main crops being harvested slowly, just launched the experiment video so if you haven't already check it out
Great result. And I hope your little unicorn helper stays interested in allotmenteering, I think we should be teaching all kids how to grow their own food. Marty. 😁
Marty you are right. I work tirelessly to promote kids to gardening. It is something my two have grown up with. If you look way back in the videos you will see them both in prams as I was gardening. Get them in the soil learning where their food comes from. In fact Im doing something else for the kids atm look out for a very near future episode :)
That was a good weight of potatoes there and I'm hungry just looking a them thinking of butter and salad.
mmmmmm.......
A Man from my own heart Richard. Exactly how they went down. perfect tasting and fresh. Main crops will be heavier but a brill weight for first early spuds
Nice harvest 👍🏻 Nothing like the taste of home grown. Had my first ever harvest (3.75lbs) of potatoes grown in pots and they were gorgeous with butter and salt. I didn’t eat them all myself ... honest 👍🏻😁🥔
Yeah Yeah. I scoffed a load tonight
Wow that’s a great harvest, easily double mine, I struggle to keep my compost moist, could you let me know how many seed potatoes you put in and how much fertiliser and any other tips. : all the best - Steve
Steve, 4 seed for first earlies 2 for main crop spuds. I water with about a third of a can every other day. the watering can holds 11 litres when fill so they get around 3.5 litres every other day. I feed twice a week with comfrey
Oh My Goodness that pot just kept on giving. Wow marry popping bag. Very nice harvest. Super helper. 😊 I bet they were delicious
She is a great little helper Anna. She loves being in the videos
Lovely crop there mate. Mine are ready to open up, hope I get near to what you harvested 😀👍
Mate its a weird year this year, some stuff doing great others hanging on for grim life lol
great potato harvest for your first of the year !!
Yeah they were great tasting too :)
I have duke o york early spuds to harvest next week myself[ with my grandaughters help] Lovely vid, thank you
Cheers, Frank. It's great your getting your granddaughter involved. keep her in the garden interested and you will set her up for life :)
Nice harvest!
Thanks Rob. :)
Great crop Tony! Just hope mine are as productive!
Steve
For first earlies Steve I was real happy with them. a few meals and real tasty
lovely update thank you Tony and blessings
There's my shining Angel. Thanks Linda :)
I tipped out my first bucket of Charlotte tats last night. Similar result to yours. Had them for tea nothing better than eating within an hour of getting them out the ground.
Your right there Phil. You can't beat fresh, and there's no fresher than homegrown: :) happy gardening mate
Interesting though it would be nice to have a cost comparison also? Cost of compost, seed potatoes and (maybe) containers compared to buying from a budget supermarket?
Hi, what's the potting mix? It looks great. May be 50% coco peat?
nice i wish i had started doing this when my girls were little!
My kids grown up with it. have video of them in prams and as toddlers. she loves helping
Hello Sir amazing potatoes harvest impressive. Happy gardening Sir
Hey Diary of Roses garden. The same to you and thanks for taking the time to comment, it means the world to me :)
That's great for one bucket!

She is my Angel. It's Spelt Caitlyn as its a Welsh way to spell her name :) Cant wait for the rest they were great spuds to eat :)
Jesus mate, I really, Really wish I'd got more spuds in this year... Only managed to plant 4 buckets of earlies and 4 mains... Never done em' before T, but It's straight forward aint it... Love Charlotte earlies too... Salted butter and Sweet Mint!!! Oh MY!!!
Got a tone of buckets too.... IS IT TOO LATE??? Got the space to put 20 more buckets in.. and a rude itch to do just that man!
I would wait now until Agust mate and get some charlotte seed for Xmas
Yeah I only did 5 buckets and its easy matey I have a load of rows of main crops mate
on way over for salad and them potatoes they looking good Tony.
Beautiful they were Chris :)
Brilliant harvest, well done. I bought my pots from you earlier in the year and mine are nearly ready too! Do you just throw the soil onto the compost and then use it again next year? Thanks for the great vid.
As long as u had no disease you can re use it next year and feed, or put it elsewhere on the garden to enrich your soil
Hi im in England london
Can you please let me know when can I grow patatoes in containers can i start now or is it late
Hope to hear from you soon
Bye the way nice patatoes and video
Thanx
Im going to try this next year with comfrey in the buckets instead of so much fertilizer... ill see how that does
Thomas Comfrey works real well I did it a few years ago
How long since you planted when you harvested these?
3 months
Smashing crop Tony and I was washing lettuce so I may have missed how many seed did you put in?
🌱Happy Gardening my friend, Terry.
Cheers Terry. There was 2 seed potatoes in this bucket and 4 in the rest
UK Here We Grow thankyou and you did very well.
Cheers Terry
I'm really confused about early potatoes. I've watched several of your vids, but it's not a thing in the states. Do you just harvest them early or are they a specific kind of seed potato? (I'm growing in pots per your guidance, and some rows that have amazing soil left by the previous farm owners.
Great crop oh Earlies m8,Ally
Thanks Ally. Charlotte are a great salad potato nice and waxy great washed and boiled
Your daughter so cute and charming.
Good stuff man.... Hello too the Little Lady Farmer too... Great Tiara Caitlin !! :-)
Be 8 more weeks for me and the Little Farmers' I recon matey's
Cheers Pal
Mains will be around that matey plenty of time. my lettuce gone to seed
wow impressive!!!
Cheers John for your comment really appreciate it :)
Very cool. When do you stop watering before you harvest? Is there something specific that definitely tells me there's potatoes to harvest? Thank you for the information. I'm growing potatoes for the first time. Thank you :-)
When 50 percent of leave turn yellow its time
Simplify Gardening so I keep watering them until they turn yellow?
just dug my two large buckets and i got about 8 small potatoes,i'm doing something wrong
What potatoes are they Kay
Good return but I this year was careful to treat the plant gently a took all the larger pots but returned the plant to pot and gained almost the same again. I don't cut the tops anymore.
Yeah lots of people do that, However the foliage on these plants had gone over and i was happy to just have done, this year been a dry year for spuds
Can I store new potatoes in the same way as main crop ? 🤔
Should you put potatoes foliage in the compost...
Yes its fine Blight requires living material to live so as long as completely broken down before use then no chance of spreading it later
Made me hungry
me too lol
First time grower seems quite a few videos on TH-cam, so may of got mixed up.
I Planted my seed Maris piper potatoes early July for second crop they had started flowering so I decided to harvest today mid September I know these should be harvested about 1 week October should have left longer until then as only been 10weeks?
I got no potatoes at all, and seed potatoes where very soft and compost quite damp. I do have more Maris piper, Nicola, and Charlottes which I have decided not to harvest yet.
Also should they be kept under cover at this time of year, it’s around 15c -19c at the moment.
Any helpful would be grateful.
Hi Iain. Maris Piper are a main crop potato and require around 18 to 22 weeks for a harvest. this is why you had no potatoes
How many seed potatoes did you use?
I know it's a very late comment but - does anyone know how Tony identified which ones the seed potatoes were? First time grower and just trying to prepare for the bucket harvest in the next few months.
The seed potatoes have the life drained out of them. They are often greyish in colour and often wet and mushy. You will know when you see them.
I’ve done my first crop is it usual to get a few small potatoes no bigger Utahn my finger nail still hanging on the tuber?
Yeah thats natural to get some smaller ones as potatoes will grow new tubers until they die
Thank you, how did you store them? I’m reading that first/second earlies don’t really store that long?
check out my storage video in the potato playlist I am sorry for the late reply, YT didnt tell me about your comment. I just found it
Great video 👍 Do you compost the stems and leaves after harvest? Just wondering whether they would sprout in a compost pile or not
Yes I compost it all. and they don't resprout. But the peelings I add do early in the year, but when these are done the compost breaks down quick
@@simplifygardening thanks! ah so you add peelings, let them sprout and die back then they just decompose themselves back into the pile? I've always avoided added peelings thinking they would be a nightmare to get rid of similar to volunteer potato plants popping up in growing spaces from left over spud harvests
Hi. What should you do with the roots. Thanks
compost Sorry for the late reply
You're in Wales.
Great video :) can't wait to tip my spuds out x
Always nice getting the first crops of the year on the table
Hi Kath, Yeah I come through Ystrad quite a bit. In fact, I have some swarm traps there that I check regularly but shhhhh :) I will pop in and introduce myself although you have me at a disadvantage as you know what I look like and I have no idea what you look like lol.
UK Here We Grow haha Excellent. Well I own it with my friend she's blonde and called lucie. I have brown hair and am called Kath haha. Just asked me if I'm not on the desk haha
Hey Kath Will get down, Things been real hectic as I have been speaking at llanciach fawr about bee keeping and so forth. may get to pop in next week some point
I wanted to ask that when do you the potatoes are ready to be harvest and whats the best season for them i new to this
Dependant on variety but main crop potatoes 120 days
ive got a bag of spuds that have chitted , the spuds look a bit green so i wont eat them, but could i plant them ?
Yes Mandy Sorry for the late reply
@@simplifygardening no worries ,good to know
All very well harvesting the potatoes but how did your daughter do at her sports day lol
Lol Richie. she did well, she had 3 seconds :)
How many seed potatoes did you put in that container ? I took mine a few days back with a much larger container and I put 4 seed potatoes in them but I did not get good crop as I was expecting. Don't know what went wrong.
Hi 4 seed potatoes in these buckets
Thanks... I have many more buckets with the main crops.. lets see how they will come up..
I have some spots on the leaves of my potatoes and going yellow what should I do
It could be the start of old age gordon so see what they do. It wont be long we will have our first frosts
What's the best way to recycle the soil? Thanks Declan
Declan you can reuse it for spuds as long as you didnt get blight just add more feed, If you do get blight reuse it else where where you are not growing spuds or tomatoes, blight wont affect most other things. sorry for the late reply I have had some personal issues
@@simplifygardening Thanks for the reply. My first time growing anything. Your videos are very helpful. Take care Declan
How many seeds were these from?
so you reuse the soil right? sorry for lame question im new
Yes reuse the soil with no issues at all
cracking crop
As Always Thanks Steve, really appreciate it mate
Are you in the West Country?
Wales
I've just subscribed and hope to learn but, so far, you've said nothing about timing like when to plant....?
Sorry Johnny. These were all planted end of March. I didnt mention it as everything i harvest has the sowing or planting video so folks usually know when they were sown. But thats a point i never thought of. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Tony
How long have they been in
were sown March 16th
Ya missed one!
Cheers Charles, Im sure I will get a volunteer somewhere now lol
What is the latest time you can plant early potatoes in the summer for a second crop?
Very nice you baby girl and I. Like you video
Many many thanks
:-)
Thanks :)
hi. thanks for the videos. but i'm not in favor to use children to "cute" the videos. it's nice u have that moment but in privet. Sorry, i didn't give the like or the dislike.
Hi Luis. The children were not used to cute the video up. If you have looked back through my videos you will see regular appearances of my children, I have been filming videos since before they were born and they have been in episodes even when they were in prams or small toddlers. This is a family past time, I just happen to film it and pass on information. Sorry, it wasn't for you though.
Sorry, I was precipitated and judged without knowing better. Sorry about that!
And thank you very much for the videos, they are very informative.
Hey Luis, Thats no problem. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I have no issue with that, I know your new to the channel and I really appreciated you subscribing and taking the time to comment. Im sure over time you will see what I am all about here. Keep tuned got a large giveaway coming up
