Tip for next time - don’t wash potatoes or anything you harvest, until just before you want to eat them as it speeds up the rotting process. The mud around them ‘protects them

Hi Emma, I know it was not a big harvest but remember you never wash potatoes until is time to actually eat them, I know big box stores do it but they go trough a different process where everything is bigger, beautiful and tasteless. Keep it on, you can probably get another harvest before your first frost if you plant some now.

Was going to say the same about spubs, I've learnt that digging up spuds when the ground is dry & then let them dry out before dusting off the dry dirt, they will store longer if you do.

Get more potatoes in.most take roughly 90 to 100 days first week of october you could be harvesting more .
Get some daikon radish in .
    Turnips snowball maybe.
    Mustard greens
    9 star brocolli
    Lettuce

I always leave my potatoes in until the seeds are well developed after they flower and they get massive by then. Also they are great for loosing up clods of grass, I just turn the sod on top of the potato, they look like roosters. After 3 years in a row you need to move the potatoes. Maybe try carrots where the potatoes were.

I thought you didn't wash potatoes until you ate them. Might be wrong though! Something to do with them sprouting when being stored. That's probably those guys harvesting tons. I have one tub I'm gonna dig up sometime in the next 2 weeks.

    • @emmasallotmentdiaries

My understanding is you don’t wash potatoes when harvested. You let them set for about 2 weeks. Then wash before you cook and eat them.

If you get many Potatoes at any time and you want to keep them for a few months try to keep dry ,do not wash, spread them on the floor in your polly tunnel on some plastic for a few days to dry and set skin, brush dry to clean then store in a paper sack away from the light .

Foxes dig up all sorts, they can be quite a nuisance. I lay bamboo sticks around as they dont like walking on an unstable surface and it helps stop the blighters digging your plants up. I'm very envious of your tattie harvest, very impressive.

  • @countrygardensns9262

Hello Emma, I live in Nova Scotia, Canada, and in the spring when I plant my seedlings, raccoons will dig up my seedlings and search the ground for grubs. They seem to go for freshly turned earth and new plantings. Not sure if that’s a problem in the UK. xox 🇨🇦

Here in Australia we leave tin lids upside down with beer in them as it attracts the slugs and snails and they die happy.....true story. Having a bee hive close by is good too and also earthworms are excellent in the garden . Do you have a compost heap for the garden ?

  • @astraaj435
    @astraaj435 ปีที่แล้ว

I'd avoid planting the same stuff in that bed - potatoes already took the potato needs, you should get something else there. You can still put some quick growing peas or beans for late autumn. Or some brassicas for the winter harvest like swede, black radish, all sorts of cabbages (check the winter varieties)
