Something weird appeared in my photograph of galaxies

- When doing some astrophotography of the Leo triplets, something weird appeared in my final stack. At first, it looked like an artifact from the camera or telescope. But at second glance - I suspected this to be a moving object!
Thanks to David from SAAF for helping with the investigation of this object!

What happens when you encounter something weird in your photographs? Check this episode out to learn a thing or two about what can turn up in your images! Thanks to David from SAAF for all the help with investigating this!
I have had a number of cool mysteries like that, too. Thanks for making a video about it!
Did you find out which asteroids there were? I later learned you can simply run plate solving in PI to identify one :) Thanks for watching!
@@GediAstro They turned out to be geostationary satellites in one case and and Starlink satellites in the other, not asteroids.
@@jpastroguy Tough luck. Hopefully you'll get one soon enough! :) Try the area around Leo if you're in the northern hemisphere!
Very cool accidental capture. Thank for showing the process you took to identify the unknown object.
By the way Antigone is pronounced An-tig-uh-nee. It is a play written by Sophocles.
Yeah, was thinking of the pronunciation, to use the Greek one or try to make it more American :) I went for what I thought was the American way of saying it, I guess it was a bit wrong :) The downside of not doing videos in your native language 🙃 thanks for watching!
@@GediAstro Ha ha, fair enough.
Have to admit, I used to pronounce Autolycus as auto-lie-cus instead of aw-tol-eh-cus, until a friend set me straight.
That is clearly a hot pixel it moves for more likely you are doing dithering.. or the framing is slightly changing when swapping filters.
No, it’s an asteroid, it plate solves to 129 Antigone
Interesting. I wonder how many of us have caught something similar and just thought it was an artifact and processed it out of the final image so well done for investigating. Given your bottle 9 location, that image ain't that bad.
I believe that it’s mostly an OSC problem, for mono, you’d get the same artifact I got. I actually have a friend that changed to mono recently and suddenly got an asteroid in his photo too! :) sometimes it’s worth looking at your RGB subs :)
Excellent detective work. Often the magic is in the unexpected find in an image. CA
Thank you! And thanks for watching! It was a pretty spectacular surprise when I first saw the final stack. 🙂 In retrospect, I could easily just use PI to plate solve the asteroid, but using a bit of math and detective work, was more fun :)
That is great, I wish I had so many more dark and clear hours this season, but nooooo :D
I know man, I had the same problem! Now I have a new telescope and can't even try it!!
@@GediAstro That is hard :D
Cool
very cool 👍
Thanks! :)
Lucky catch. What fun to capture something different and mysterious.
Yeah! I had fun exploring what I captured :)
I'm not saying it's aliens..........but......IT'S ALIENS!!!!!!!!!!
Jk bro. Cool channel. Insta-subbed!
Thank you! Hope you’ll like the content! 😊
Nice catch. I love it when that happens. I too once incidentally captured an asteroid, Asteroid 600 Musa, while imaging the Leo Triplet.
Seems like a good constellation for those. Have a friend that captured one two in the chain a month ago :)
So cool! Makes me want to try hunting for some specific asteroids.
Yeah! That shouldn't be too hard. Let me know if you hunt any and find'em!
It feels like a time machine back to 1873, nice work.
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
good job!
Thank you! And thanks for watching 🎉
never seen that before! cool!
It’s good to know if you’re into astrophotography so I decided to mine this video :)
