Engelland wasn’t captain for Vegas, they didn’t name one until Stone in 2020
I had no idea that Joe Thornton was left unprotected in the expansion draft. I learned something new today.
That's really a technicality. The expansion draft took place June 18-20 and his contract expired on July 1st. I'm sure the Sharks had a handshake agreement with him that if he was taken in the expansion draft they'd sign him again once his contract expired a couple weeks later.
I had no idea the Darcy kumper was on Minnesota
I believe Josh Manson was not selected because the Ducks gave up Shea Theodore to protect Manson. I think the Knights would make the same decision again.

Darcy Kuemper was a Wild but I don’t remember him being a Wild this late I could’ve swore that the Wild got rid of him pre 2016 replacing him with Devin Duebynik
There is a really weird group of people I have been seeing lately saying Vegas got nothing but 2nd line players when they drafted 😂😂. Funny thing is that not a single anylist, announcer, betting line, advanced stat, writer or youtube personality said Vegas would be any good after that draft. Some of those teams couldn't get rid of players fast enough. Teams like Minnesota and Florida who absolutely gifted Vegas MORE than anything they could have wanted. Seriously this is how the phone call went for the Florida draft picks.
Vegas: Hey Florida we see that you left Marchessault unprotected even though he was one of your best players last season. Gallant really liked him so we will take him off your hands.
Florida: yeah well if you want Marchessault you also have to take Smith!!! He had one down year so we hate him now!
Vegas: But we are only asking for Marchessault.....
Florida: YOU ARE TAKING SMITH TOO!!!
Vegas:.......ok....we will take Smith too
Florida turns away from the phone and starts talking to someone else in the room: I can't believe those idiots in Vegas. They fell right into our trap of leaving Marchessault exposed, don't they know hes only 5'9 😂😂. They also took Smith 😂😂😂. Man we are smart!!! Bjugstad is the future of this franchise!!!
Yeah, second guessing is easy. Now tell me that you already knew how good marchessault was before vegas without lying. Tell me more about shea theodore and all the players. Like you said, they took all 2d liners, its better to have a load of 2d liners than a couple of superstars with nothing around, like edmonton

@Leptitjeunehomme exactly my point. Even the fans the first year thought well its a expansion team but its our first pro league team so we will just have fun with it. Nobody in the fanbase and especially nobody outside of the fanbase thought the Knights would be any good. Then they were good and everyone wanted to do revisionist history and say they knew they would be great.
@Leptitjeunehomme the point was that Vegas didn't get a bunch of 2nd liners and that nobody saw their success coming. Yet after they started winning, everyone online started talking about how the team was gifted, all the picks were 2nd liners (they werent), everyone knew they would be great (they didnt)

I’m pretty sure Radulov wasn’t signed with Montreal until after the expansion draft because he wanted to play for Montreal & Montreal didn’t want to waste one of their slots on him so that’s a wasted pick that wouldn’t happen, he wasn’t eligible

Some fun names Vegas could have selected: Shane Doan, Drew and Ryan Miller, TJ Oshie, Yanni Gourde, Nail Yakupov, Jaromir Jagr, Andrei Markov, Jarome Iginla, Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau
I’m not sure about the rest of those guys, but T.J. didn’t sign his extension until right after the draft because it helped them protect and extra forward. He could’ve immediately left and signed back with WSH in free agency. Ovi did the same thing during the SEA draft. Nice little loophole they’ve used twice. 😂
Boro probably would have been the pick from Ottawa if Phaneuf didn’t think he was god’s gift on the backend and waived his NMC allowing the Sens to protect Erik Karlsson’s defence partner in Methot. Still makes me angry to this day.

The trades really made that team, that and absolutely strongarming GMs of cap strapped teams, who were doing pretty desperate deals that sort of looked good at that time for said GMs ie "look at the cap and scrubs we unloaded for some picks and B/C-prospects. The idiots, hahaa!".
Obviously this does not include the Panthers, those deals were bad then and well... they gave up the 2023 Conn Smythe winner enough said.
No fan of Vegas what so ever, hate that cutthroat wheelin and dealin they do with absolutely no loalty, but what they did in the expansion draft was so good the GMs around the league learned their lessons and gave Seattle none of those deals Vegas got. Absolute masterclass.

Why would you change anything? They got 3 wins away from a Stanley cup with that team they got from the 2017 expansion draft+ players traded to them because of it. I don’t think there’s any change you could make to make them better than that
