That's awesome, I got a mandolin because I was also teaching myself violin and when I saw the tuning was the same I thought it would be a transferable skill.
Some teach that the fifth and sixth fret are for the pinkie.. and that is hard, and painful (prolly because i am sixty and we all have some arthritis by sixty.) This is actually a lot more comfortable, to go with the pinkie on 7th fret and ring-finger on 5th, 6th. Now I am going to learn my songs again. I think it will be a lot easier for me. THank you!!

So, what fingering would you use to play a continuous chromatic scale from the open G string to an A on the first string at the fifth fret?
I don't know how to angle my fingers so the note will not be muffled by the finger
